Gill vs. Vihari for #6 in tests

The last test series that I followed was the one in Aus where Vihari looked like a glorified nightwatchman. If he plays, look forward to seeing how much he has improved (I know he scored some runs in some of series after that but like most Ind batsmen, he can do that vs. lower ranked sides)

When he was forced to open yes he did struggle but toughened it out but he did look compact at 6 in Australia in a couple of innings

My target test team In SENA In a year  ....

1. Shaw

2. Mayank

3. Pujara

4. Kohli

5. Gill

6. Vihari

7. Pant

8. Kuldeep

9. Shami

10. Saini / Ishant

11. Bumrah

this is a selection based on potential, but not on form. in this spirit, chepu should also be discarded in a couple of years because his creaky knees won't work much longer and his form is also tapering off since Oz tour. time to bring in vihari at 3. I am also not sure if Mayank will maintain his form - seems to have lost his hunger for runs.

How do we select a future team based on current form ?

And what would your team be for the near future ?

we can't select future team based on current form, but we can (and should) take future form into account. I am mostly fine with the team you wrote - only changes would be gopal/rahul chahar for kuldeep (who is too slow through the air) and maybe vihari for pujara 2 yrs from now. depends of course on how garg evolves.

Vihari has to compete with Jadeja & Rahane in tests.

Jadeja >> Vihari = Rahane. Rahane despite not scoring many 100s,still averages around 50s in the last year. Vihari has done well. For me,he is a batsman who can roll his arms. But Jadeja allows team to play 5 proper bowlers.

Both Gill & Shaw are class apart & must be fast tracked.Don't really care who they drop to bring these two.I don't think either of them will mind batting at 5 or 6.

gill may have the versatility for it, but shaw has only trained as opener throughout his life. not easy to take up demands of no. 5 or no. 6 directly in int'l cricket with no prior experience. apart from that, I agree with rest.
