zen Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 From the PoV of doing well in SENA. Should Gill be drafted in for #6 or should Vihari be continued with? This is mainly from batting PoV where someone can hit runs consistently against good bowling attack (not weaker test sides). The ability to bowl a few overs is not being discussed. What are the other options that Ind has? Both of them are currently playing for Ind A vs NZ A. This is assuming that top 5 positions are currently settled. If Rahane’s position at #5 comes into question, a situation emerges where both Gill and Vihari can potentially play.
Ankit_sharma03 Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Vihari has the 1st right but it wud be wagner vs Vihari this time
RajBan Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Ideally they should plan to phase out Rahane but that won't happen. Likewise Shaw should be given chance over Rohit , instead Mayank will be dropped at the first opportunity. Sandeep99, Global.Baba, sergio04 and 1 other 2 2
zen Posted January 30, 2020 Author Posted January 30, 2020 Ideally, I would prefer Pandya-Pant combination at 6-7 as it gives both batting and bowling options. Pandya has hit 50s in SA and Eng, while Pant has hit 100s in Eng and Aus, and will probably hit one in NZ. But with Pandya injured and Saha (don’t know about his current form with the bat) in, Gill and Vihari appear to be good options.
express bowling Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 (edited) My target test team In SENA In a year .... 1. Shaw 2. Mayank 3. Pujara 4. Kohli 5. Gill 6. Vihari 7. Pant 8. Kuldeep 9. Shami 10. Saini / Ishant 11. Bumrah Edited January 31, 2020 by express bowling Lannister, Cricwala, Vickydev and 4 others 2 5
ShoonyaSifar Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Kohli needed 5 bowlers and a specialist keeper for Tests vs weak SA and BD. Suddenly expecting Gill, Vihari, Pant or Kuldeep to step up in SENA will be unfair. Only change should be Saini for Ishant if he fails to get fit in time. This should be the 11: Rohit, Mayank, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Jadeja, Saha, Ashwin, Shami, Saini, Bumrah Let them play both the tests as they would need more than a test to acclimatise. Cricspin and Cricwala 1 1

Had something like that in mind for some time -> Link If Pandya is in form (also to develop him further) and to provide the team with an AR, I would include him at 6. That can allow us to play two specialist spinners as well if required among the 4 bowlers. Gill/Vihari/.... for #5 Edited January 30, 2020 by zen

We are talking about medium term target / preferences. Rohit and Rahane are certainties for this NZ series. Kuldeep will probably not even make the squad as per reports.

I mean seriously this is over estimation of Kuldeep that he can do better.. Ashwin or Jadeja are good for tests even for next few years.. they bring runs on the table too. In tests in Asia they are no brainers. In tests in SENA In the last 8 years Jadeja averages. 40 Ashwin averages. 39 Kuldeep has had a good start in SENA. 39 minutes ago, Cricspin said: Plus Vihari has done nothing wrong to be dropped and there is no guarantee that Gill is going to come in and take the world by storm... there is talent and he will get his chance.. I think Gill needs to go short formats first and then Tests. It is possible to play both in the medium term.
cowboysfan Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 why would Gill play at 6?? if things go right he could be the next Indian captain.

Maybe a year back but Rahane has had a string of good scores so he has earned a shot for the foreseeable future. Right now breaking into the test team for anyone seems a challenge be it bowlers or batsmen. I guess Vihari seems to be the only dispensable guy but even he has earned a run based on his last few performances

We are ok to settle down for inconsistent players knowing fully well there are better players waiting in the sidelines . Mayank had to wait for years for somebody like Dhawan, Shaw wait for Rohit (Rohit is too good to miss out on Indian pitches so he will play for another 2-3 years even if he scores all zeroes in SENA) and Gill will wait for Rahane who was pathetic until recent past. rtmohanlal Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 now that Vihari has been selected he deserves an extended run.... keep in mind he did superbly in WI outweighing the likes of Mayank & Kohli.Gill's chances will come

He doesn't look as threatening in the short form either.. I dont mind him as the second spinner. Not the only one.. Disturbs the balance of the side and if he doesn't click, waste of a spot with no batting or fielding... 24 wickets in 6 matches is nothing to make of.. Also currently Jadeja outdoing other spinners in NZ. I was not talking about this upccoming series but medium term target test team in SENA. No point in having spinners who average 40 and 39 respectively. ( Jadeja and Ashwin ) Kuldeep needs to be given a go ... if he does not do well after sufficient chances then someone else needs to be tried, but not J and A. My point was more about moving on from J and A in tests in SENA rather than choosing Kuldeep.

Jaddu will now have a permanent position across all formats and Ashwin will very soon join him too.
Sandeep99 Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 What has Vihari done to be dropped? As RajBan stated earlier, Rahane should be phased out by the end of the current overseas and then bring Gill in. By then Gill also would have played one more season of first class cricket. Providing him chance in ODIs in the meanwhile will not hurt and can help him too.
zen Posted January 31, 2020 Author Posted January 31, 2020 (edited) On 2nd thoughts, I ll go with Pant, who has the best record batting at 6/7 for India in SENA (vs. good bowling attacks) .... Saha (if keeping) and Vihari/Gill (if Saha is not keeping) can compete for the other slot (6/7) .... also an opportunity for Pant to get the 3rd 100 in his 3rd series in SENA View overall figures [change view] Primary team Australia or England or India or New Zealand or South Africa Opposition team Australia or England or New Zealand or South Africa Home or away away (home of opposition) Start of match date between 31 Jan 2018 and 31 Jan 2020 Batting position between 6 and 7 Ordered by batting average (descending) Page 1 of 1 Showing 1 - 18 of 18 First Previous Next Last Return to query menu Cleared query menu Overall figures Player Span Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s OJ Pope (ENG) 2019-2020 5 8 2 376 135* 62.66 751 50.06 1 3 0 48 1 RR Pant (INDIA) 2018-2019 7 13 1 512 159* 42.66 725 70.62 2 0 1 51 11 RG Sharma (INDIA) 2018-2018 2 4 1 106 63* 35.33 199 53.26 0 1 0 7 3 BA Stokes (ENG) 2018-2020 3 4 0 137 72 34.25 215 63.72 0 1 0 18 3 GH Vihari (INDIA) 2018-2019 3 5 0 146 56 29.20 347 42.07 0 1 1 18 1 JM Bairstow (ENG) 2018-2019 3 6 0 173 101 28.83 331 52.26 1 0 1 22 1 TD Paine (AUS) 2018-2019 9 18 4 395 62 28.21 821 48.11 0 2 1 45 3 MS Wade (AUS) 2019-2019 4 8 0 201 110 25.12 381 52.75 1 0 1 28 0 C de Grandhomme (NZ) 2019-2020 3 5 0 125 52 25.00 202 61.88 0 1 0 12 2 HH Pandya (INDIA) 2018-2018 4 7 1 133 52* 22.16 227 58.59 0 1 1 22 1 MR Marsh (AUS) 2018-2019 5 10 0 217 96 21.70 487 44.55 0 1 1 30 2 JC Buttler (ENG) 2019-2020 5 7 0 135 43 19.28 237 56.96 0 0 0 17 4 BJ Watling (NZ) 2019-2020 3 6 0 105 40 17.50 353 29.74 0 0 0 10 0 MM Ali (ENG) 2018-2018 1 2 0 28 28 14.00 51 54.90 0 0 1 6 0 R Ashwin (INDIA) 2018-2018 1 1 0 13 13 13.00 15 86.66 0 0 0 3 0 KD Karthik (INDIA) 2018-2018 2 4 0 21 20 5.25 58 36.20 0 0 2 2 0 Z Crawley (ENG) 2019-2019 1 1 0 1 1 1.00 6 16.66 0 0 0 0 0 N Wagner (NZ) 2019-2019 1 1 0 0 0 0.00 1 0.00 0 0 1 0 0 Edited January 31, 2020 by zen
The Dark Horse Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 What wrong has Vihari done? Indian team was looking for such a guy since Laxman left..you don't just throw him away just because he's not in the limelight (which we have done and apparently noone would care too). Suhaan 1
SUMO Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 Rahane and Vihari have done nothing wrong in past 12 months, deserves to play these 2 tests. But I wanna see Gill also
