His batting average would have increased in this era (around 40 maybe) but i guess his bowling would have been useless.

Sir agarkar :hatsoff:

I think was the series where agarkar had jayasuria in a lot of problem

Batsman vs bowler stat is meaningless, at least the way it is presented now. The avg indicated is simply the avg of the batsman in the matches where that particular bowler dismissed him.

For instance if Smith is dismissed by Thakur in 2 matches where he scored 10 and 10, that column would show avg 10. Even if he has scored uneaten 150 in each of his remaining 3 matches and 50% of those runs coming against Thakur.

Sanath was great for his era, just like Srikkanth was for his era. Need to look beyond statistics and study how they changed the game, how many matches and tournaments they won for their sides. For those of us who saw him live, stats don't capture the full picture.

2008 Asia Cup final, 39 yo Sanath on his last legs against a formidable Indian side that had won CB series a few months prior

Sanath 125 (114)

Rest of top 5 (incl Sanga, Mahela) with scores of 4, 11, 5, 0 and FOW 1/11, 2/34, 3/66, 4/66

Had an Indian played that kind of knock in a tournament final, esp at that age, we would never hear the end of it. Some players are beyond stats, from India Yuvraj will be an equivalent example...not just elite match-winners but guys who can win tournaments.

PS- Sanath as 35 yo was MOS in the 2004 Asia Cup...apart from 2 blistering 100s he comprehensively outbowled Kumble and Harbhajan throughout the tournament incl the final. Who knew he would repeat his heroics 4 years later?

That 2006 SL-Eng match was one of my favorites growing up, Lanka made a mockery of the huge target, that kind of hitting was unheard of back then...chasing 320+, they were going at 9rpo till the 32nd over.

I have no doubt in my mind that had he been playing under these new ICC regulations and on these pattas, even 300 wouldn't be beyond him.

I followed most of my cricket in the 90s. I have not seen any batsman perform at such a dominating level in LOIs at his peak.

Best performances in the 90s from what I recall (in no particular order):

  • M Crowe in 92 WC
  • Lara played many memorable knocks in his first 100 ODIs
  • Jayasuriya at his peak starting with the 96 WC
  • Tendulkar's  Desert Storm innings
  • Klusener in 99 WC

Ofcourse he was big time match winner but he was too inconsistent with bat as well. When you play 450 odd matches you will have many memorable innings to remember. What about his performance against top sides of his era? His great performance mostly came in Asian conditions. (Don't post his couple of overseas tons now, i am talking about consistency overall) Question is will you pick him in your world xi or asia xi & is he ATG for you?
