Apologies. Yeah Iain O'Brien. Agree he was not as slingy as Bumrah or Malinga but his pre-release action was as slingy as Bumrah.

Bumrah isn't slingy. Malinga is. Both Bumrah and O'Brian are hip dominant bowlers. Hip driven bowlers cant be slingy. Only knee dominant bowlers are slingy.

Slingy bowlers are Tait, Akhtar, Lee, Fidel Edwards, Mitch Johnson. All of them were knee dominant bowlers. I don't remey India yet producing a slingy bowler who played international cricket.  Even in world cricket right now, I don't see any slingy bowler and it is a top five fastest bowlers in the world have all been slingy.

Then why do you think a lot of commies refer to Bumrah's action as slingy ? Is there a close resemblance to being slingy and "hip dominant" ? Genuine question.

Rubel Hussain , Hamish Bennet, Billy stanlake.......slingy or no ?

Bennett isn't slingy, he bowls of a wrong foot like Sohail Tanveer. And yeah forgot about Rubel, he is slingy, Stanlake too and both are knee dominant bowlers. I will differentiate between knee and hip dominants with screenshots, their body positioning at the crease differs.

Example Stanlake and Bumrah. Here are the screenshots.

Now see in these two pics. Bumrah's backfoot is pointing straight down the pitch, backfoot knee stays straight, isn't bent or even if it bents a bit, it will between less than 45 to 10 degrees. Bowlers who have such position at landing are categorised as hip dominant bowlers. They are also called springy bowlers. Such bowlers generate pace through tendons and fascia elasticity. They don't spend a lot of time on backfoot. If they do, they won't be able to generate pace. They have quick arm action, good hip and shoulder separation and very less stretch shortening cycle. These bowlers also depend on their run-up to generate pac. other examples are Jofra, Steyn, Mark Wood, Starc, Varun Aaron, Navdeep Saini, etc.  These bowlers don't need to get big and are mostly slender and light in physique.

Then see Billy, his backfoot is pointing towards midwicket and is parallel to the crease and his back leg knee is bent making quite an angle on his shin and foot, it would be somewhere around 45-90 degrees. Such bowlers are categorised as knee dominant bowlers.  They are opposite to hip dominants. They are also called muscle bowlers. These bowlers need to get stronger to generate pace as they use muscle stretch reflex, higher stretch shortening cycle and more time on back foot to generate pace because they don't get good hip shoulder seperation at crease.  Also, not all knee dominants are slingers, but all slingers are knee dominants. For example Shane Bond, Lockie Ferguson, Ishant, Umesh, Shami are knee dominant but not slingers. Lee, Tait, Malinga, Akhtar, Mitch Johnson, fidel Edwards are knee dominant and slingers.

Now what qualifies one a Slinger. Slingers are those who get their bowling arm at or near the pocket of their right leg at the delivery stride. One  right arm bowler has to get his bowling arm stretched backwards from near the right leg pocket to sling the ball. (See the pic of Stanlake and his bowling arm position and different position in Bumrah pic)

Also whether you are knee dominant or hip dominant, you are born with it and it starts from childhood. How a child moves, how he jumps whether he bends his knee or stays straight. It's all in genes and how CNS responds in a particular child.

I will give you an example from baseball. It goes for all sports.

Check this pic. In the first row see their backfoot and knee. They are hip dominant. Second row is of knee dominants.

This is from baseball. Same thing here. First one is hip dominant, second one is knee.

If one knows his dominance, it becomes easier for a bowler bowl the way he is created and is supposed to bowl, understand the technique and improve on it to achieve his true potential.

Knee dominants need more strength to generate pace, more muscles. They need to do high volume of strength training focusing on strong quads and calves. More squatting and calf raises.

Hip dominants can't get big, otherwise they will not move quickly. Such bowlers need to work on sprinting, jumping, work on their glutes, arm speed, run-up, loading, pre-turn, etc.  Less squatting, more deadlifts. These bowlers need to create as large circle possible in front of their body with their arms when they gather and load. Bumrah, Saini, Cummins, Starc, Jofra all do that very effectively.

Also fast bowlers are born with those fast twitch fibers. No training can turn a 75 mph bowler into 95 mph bowler but right training and technique can help a bowler achieve his true pace ceiling. Example, Deepak chahar, he was a 75-78 mph bowler when he first came but he trained well and achieved his top pace ceiling of around 85-87 mph.
