When Abey Kuruvilla reached for the sky

Bhandari wasn't a trundler. He did hit 140 in 2003. He was fast medium.

I still remember there was some hype in the newspaper before his debut that Bhandari had raw pace but when he made his debut he turned out to be a trundler. I don't remember him hitting 140. Any video link?

Before speed-guns were used regularly starting WC 1999, it was the bouncy bowlers who were thought to be quick ( unless a tearaway quick was under discussion like a Waqar of 1989 )

 

Kuruvilla was a very tall bowler ( 6'5" ) and got good bounce and carry. It was but natural that such a pacer would be thought of as quick in those days in domestic cricket.  

 

But it is probably true that he was quicker around 1990. I heard at that time that he had given up hope of playing international cricket after he was ignored for 6 or 7 years. And this led to him losing intensity and pace 

 

After Srinath injured his rotator cuff, Kuruvilla got a call suddenly in early 1997 and was probably not at peak fitness and pace at that time.

I liked Harvinder Singh.

 

He had the mindset of a fast bowler and sufficient pace to go with it too. Plus he had a decent outswing and a good enough bouncer.

 

I think he would have done much better if he played in the late 2010s decade.

Kuruvilla was fast in the late 80’s and 90’s but I guess he reinvented himself for Indian pitches and conditions of those times and became a Munaf Patel type skillful bowler. Even then he was given a shot too late and dare I say at the cost of blasphemy because of Sachin’s captaincy.
 

He was a cousin or uncle or some thing  of a friend of mine who was a  fast bowler himself in our local league.

This is why Greg Chappell was our greatest coach. Even though Saurav backed a lot of match winners and his colleagues they all played for big cricketing teams like Punjab,Delhi,Mumbai,Karnataka,TN,Hyderabad and his home state of Bengal.

 

GC pushed players from smaller cricketing states  like  Jharkand (MSD), Raina/RP (UP), Sreeshanth (Kerala) and even few who didn’t make it like Venu Gopal Rao (Andhra) etc. munaf etc were fast tracked as well.

Mohanty was more skillful  than Bhuvi or Deepak Chahar in certain conditions. Sometimes had he been part of the current process he would have had a lot more success and improved as he would have been managed better.

 

 

I am sure Ishant,Umesh etc would have faded away in the older system

Mohanty got butchered by klusener and it ended his career. He was sandeep sharma+ kind of bowler. In flat tracks cannon fodder.  In helpful tracks he was as deadly as akram as he was one of the few bowlers who had both outswing and in swing.

During that tour one of the WI commentator who saw Abey bowl said 'i dont understand how such a large man with that runup bowl so slow'
