Let us state the obvious here - if we lose this match, fielding is the #1 mujrim

(1) All of the run outs by Ozzies in our first innings came from brilliant direct throws - the kind that only ATG Jadeja seems to be capable of doing on the India team.

(2) The catches.  I need like a supercomputer to keep up with the number of chances and half chances we've put down.  But the Ozzies have nailed pretty much every one of those.  

 

Brilliance like that has impacts that go beyond just that one wicket, especially when they break a long or threatening partnership.  The adrenaline effect kicks in.  The fielders muster more confidence and give more energy and are more focused.  Bowlers bowl with their tails up, and am sure generate more nip off the pitch  I will even go as far as to say, it helps with team camaraderie when someone pulls off a blinder or makes a throw like Hazlewood or Labuschagne did.  And most of all, it completely demoralizes the batting team - like - "crap, this wicket has no demons, but I am going to get out soon!"

 

Don't get me wrong, we have done this to other teams in the past (I can't remember specifics, but just remember the good feeling from seeing it happen), but this time, we have been totally owned in this aspect.  If we had held on to chances or effected a couple of more brilliant runouts (like the one to get SDS out), we would have been chasing 150 instead of 400.

all 3 matches, teams with better fielding have dominated.

 

We put down 6-7 catches in adelaide while aussies held on to every edge in 36/9 innings

 

Aussies dropped more catches in MCG.. rahane was dropped twice

 

Really need to get a better fielding coach after this series

Problem is Indian test team has Pujara Ashwin Vihari who are slow. Then you have Bumrah.. so out of 10 you have 4 who are dodgy. Then you have Rahane who basically is a slip n gully fielder, Rohit Sharma who has become fat, Mayank who I Had hopes on but disappointed, Shaw who is utter crap.. you then have Shami, Ishant the bowlers.. less said the better..only Umesh is ok..that leaves Kohli who drops one catch a match who is dependable, Gill and Jadeja.. you cant win tests with 4 dependable fielders. You need at least 7 which Australians have..

I'd say the colossal brainfart during the 2nd session of day 3 and pants injury .

We batted 80 overs to put 185 on the board ,surely we should have batted another 40 to reach 300 on a docile pitch .

That would have meant aus batting more overs and not declaring early and we only had to negotiate about 80 overs instead of 120 overs

Don’t forget the batting coach. The way our tailenders bat against short pitch bowling is a throw back to the 1960’s at least those guys didn’t have protective gear.

True, but that's a bit of a lost cause.  Regardless, they would not have been necessary to score except that the Ozzie fielding brilliance got rid of our top batsmen.  Plus if our guys had fielded even marginally better and taken a catch or two early, the Ozzie 2nd innings wouldn't have been such a cakewalk.
