Team composition by player types and having adequate backups

Recommended Posts

One of the master-strokes of this TM in the 4th test was that they maintained the team composition of having a batting all-rounder at No.7 and a bowling all-rounder at No.8, despite loss of key personnel.

Let us look at what the current successful team compositions are in the different formats ... and what backups we have, to maintain those compositions.

TEST MATCHES  ----

Openers ----

1. Gill / Shaw
2. Rohit / Mayank

Middle order batsmen ----

3. Pujara / Vihari
4. Kohli / Rahul
5. Rahane / Hardik / Vihari

Batsman-keeper ----

6. Pant ... no proper back-up as Saha can't bat in the top 6

Batting all-rounders ----

7. Jadeja / Sundar / Hardik

Bowling all-rounders --

8. Ashwin / Shardul / Axar

Fast bowlers ----

9. Bumrah / Umesh
10. Shami / Saini

Fast-medium Swing Bowlers / Bounce bowlers  ----  ( needed outside Asia ... usually not needed in Asia )

11. Ishant / Siraj

Specialist spinners ----

11. Kuldeep / Nadeem. ( In Asia, in place of the swing bowler )

1. Pant has no proper back-up  ... as Saha can't bat in the top 6.

2. We need to develop a couple of young fast bowlers like Tyagi and Prasidh.

3. There isn't a proper backup for Kohli, the batsman ( which is obviously not easy to find )

ODIs ----

Openers ----

1. Rohit / Mayank
2. Dhawan / Gill .... prefer Gill as first choice

Middle order ----

3. Kohli / Gill
4. Iyer / Pant .... prefer Pant as first choice

Batsman-keeper ----

5. Rahul / Pant

Batting all-rounders ----

6. Hardik
7. Jadeja / Sundar ?

Spinners ----

8. Chahal / Kuldeep .... wrist spinners preffered

Fast bowlers ----

9. Bumrah
10. Shami / Saini

Swing bowler ----

11. Shardul / Bhuvi / Natarajan

1. Biggest issue is ... we don't have proper backups for batting all-rounders, Hardik and Jadeja.

Can Sundar develop into a good No.7 in ODIs. He can hit the big shots but can he do it consistently ??

Who are the other options ?

2. We need to develop a new quick bowler who can bowl good yorkers and slower balls too.

T20Is ----

Openers ----

1. Rohit / Dhawan ... not a good backup
2. Rahul /  Mayank / Kishan

Middle order ----

3. Kohli
4. Iyer / Samson / Pant

5. Samson / SKY  / Pant

Batting all-rounders ----

6. Hardik
7. Jadeja / Axar / Sundar ? / Tewatia  ?

Pacers ----

8. Bhuvi / Shardul

10. Bumrah / Shami ... no proper backup

11. Natarajan / Chahar

Spinners ----

9. Chahal / Varun / Kuldeep  .... wrist spinners preffered

8. Sundar ( if 3 spinners are played )

1. Our T20I team looks the most unsettled among the formats ... with quite a few question marks.

2. The 2 batting all-rounders don't have proper backups.

3. We don't have a 2nd fast bowler ... apart from Bumrah ... who has T20 skills.

If Bumrah is injured, or on pitches where we need 2 quick bowlers, we will miss a fast bowler.

4. Slots 4 and 5 don't look that settled or impressive yet.

In the opening position Shaw , and  Mayank looks out of contention. Shaw has looked out of sorts, have fitness problems and according to some attitude problem.

Mayank has batted in the middle order only due to injury to Vihari,so he is also out of contention.Mayank also didn't look good in the middle order as Shardul looked in the first inning.

Some young youngsters ie Paddikal, Gaikwad,Eswaran should be tried out in the home series. Most probably the selection committee should look after left handed batsman.

Iyer seems to be only one who is being groomed for the middle order.

Ishan Kishan and K Bharat seems to be forerunner for the back up wicket keeper spot.

Prasidh is not in the reckoning. He was not selected for net bowling also.

It seems all the main bowlers to reserve bowlers have played in Australia.

The selection committee should look after a good left arm fast bowler for the test squad.

For the pace bowling allrounder slot there are no alternative. Hardik can't bowl, Dubey  and Vijay Shankar are out of contention.

Ishan Kishan, Bharat are back-up for Pant. Both are regularly selected in the A team

Prasidh should have been next in line after Saini and Siraj but he seems to be out of favour as he was not selected even as net bowler

Rahul and Iyer are only looking as backup for the middle order There are no youngsters yet earmarked for the middle order

Some left field selections for the batting AR spot apart from the usual suspects, who are still some way off national team radar but can be groomed for the role

Shams Mulani: Very good ball striking technique and looks like a very good batsman, proper AR prospect. His fitness needs to improve though

Lalit Yadav: Bowls decent offspin, good power hitter. But batting against pace needs to improve. Much better prospect than Gowtham for example. Needs to be looked at just for his big hitting potential.

Utkarsh Singh: LOI and T20 prospect. Can bat anywhere across the top 6 and bowls offspin in the opening overs for Jharkhand. Clean striker of the ball.

Not too worried about Tests as it seems like our TM has figured out the equation to do well at home and Away.

We need to win more silverware in ODIs and T20s and we have the firepower to do it,just that our selectors and captain have dropped the ball on various occasions, here again our batting is what is letting us down

Openers-Rohit walks into the XI and does Dhawan for now,Padikkal, kishan should be groomed,we  need left handers at the top, cant just let our top order crumble when there is some assistance in the pitch and bowlers are allowed to bowl the same line and length-ref ct vs amir and wc vs boult.

Top Order-Kohli obviously is fixed but must be willing to drop to no.4 to accommodate Gill when needed,Rahul is the backup for these 2.

Middle Order:Rahul and Iyer,Manish Pandey could have developed into a regular by now but for various reasons it did not happen and his time is most likely up.

Lower Order:Pant should be fixed and Suryakumar Yadav backup.

Selectors must keep an eye on Nitish Rana he has the ability and the short ball is not as much an issue in LOIS,handy bowler too.Riyan Parag and Abdul Samad must be groomed as well

Allrounders:Again we have a decent pool in Hardik,Jadeja and Axar and maybe Shardul.

Dubey, Shankar have been tried out and found out not to be adequate. Abhishek Sharma,Samad are too raw at the moment.

K Gautam,Shreyas Gopal,Axar Patel are the only experienced allrounder who have regularly featured in A teams .

Tewatia looks to be a match winner and should get a look in

Natarajan and Shardul looks to be good for the back up role With their new found confidence from the Australia  tour. Natarajan adds a great variety with his left arm and also his ability to bowl Yorkers.

Siraj also is quite handful and should play odi.

Selection committee should look to rewamp the T20 side and bring out youngsters in the squad.

Virat, Rohit, Dhawan,Shami, Bumrah should not be rested for the forthcoming T20

The main thing to look for, while choosing a new batsman ... is whether he has sufficient time to play quick bowlers (  hit quick bowlers if LOI batsman )

Test batsmen and ODI top 3 batters should have a good idea about where their off stump is.  Have a good off stump game.

Most Indian batsman are good to decent against spin bowling.

Swing bowling is primarily faced in tests in England and NZ. Batsmen picked for this purpose should preferably be good against swing.

Among newbies ....

Sundar can definitely play quick bowling and hit them too, when set.

Padikkal looks very comfortable against quick bowling and can hit quick bowlers too.

Samad seems to have sufficient time to hit quick bowlers.

Very small sample size though ... so can't be very sure.

Kishan and SKY are hitting quick bowlers too, albeit on slower surfaces.

Like most of your choices except Nitish Rana and K Gowtham.

Rana has issues against quick bowling and Gowtham looks a but under international class to me.

We have some good swing bowlers for ODIs.

But I am talking about a new quick bowler who can bowl good yorkers and slower balls.

Tyagi already has a cracking yorker and looks like a fast learner to me ... he is trying decent slower balls already.

I feel Indian batsman have found the way to bat on hard decks of Australia so they will do well in SA.  In soft pitches of England & NZ they still have to find out to the scoring areas.

Rahul maybe decent at No.5 in test matches.

Iyer should be nowhere near the test team.

True ... the top batsmen have.

But there are weak ones like Iyer too.

Most Indians are poor at this.

Most Indians are poor at this.

Kohli has unusual way that he stands outside & tries to meet the ball as early as possible to nullify swing..  Whereas the general & most followed way is to play as late as you can & allow it to swing.

Also some shocking but vital things have come out of last two tours of Australia.

Indian RHB averaged nearly 27

Indian left handers averaged 55

B Arun in the interview told the thought process behind this after Adelaide..  He said Aussies were bowling in the same spot & Shastri's idea was to include left handers in Pant & Jaddu.  I think they'll go for the same in England..  Both Pant & Jaddu did well there with the bat..  Even though they were brought late in the series.

3. There isn't a proper backup for Kohli, the batsman ( which is obviously not easy to find )

TEST MATCHES  ----

Openers ----

1. Gill / Shaw
2. Rohit / Mayank

This is a very iffy opening pair in ENG & NZ and to some extent in  AUS & SA . Should have atleast one opener who is a true opener and has good experience as opener in Domestic. .

My vote is to test Eashwaran. or even move Puji to open and bring Gill to #3.

Batsman-keeper ----

6. Pant ... no proper back-up as Saha can't bat in the top 6

No choices but to test K Bharat & Ishan Kishan  (esp. if he succeeds in 50 overs - should be groomed upwards for test) .

Batting all-rounders ----

7. Jadeja / Sundar / Hardik

None . Should be thankful at least we have 2 high class international quality in Sir/Don .

We are good with these for another 5 years . Lets  savour & enjoy what we have .

Fast-medium Swing Bowlers / Bounce bowlers  ----  ( needed outside Asia ... usually not needed in Asia )

11. Ishant / Siraj

Would like to groom  Porel  in this category.

Fast bowlers ----

9. Bumrah / Umesh
10. Shami / Saini

Add one more pair of Tyagi & Mavi.

Specialist spinners ----

11. Kuldeep / Nadeem. ( In Asia, in place of the swing bowler )

Would like to test one more test kind of Leftie  -Saurabh Kumar . Looks crafty.

Has good experience and good numbers in FC.  -  44 matches - 192 scalps .

Also add in Rahul Chahar.
