To sweep or not to sweep?

Why the * is that even a question!

Sweeps is risky because they work on flat non turners, but become addictive.

Any hint of turn and sweep becomes your downfall.

 

Ashwin and Nadeem bowled poorly vs Root, should have slowed and put more revs.

Also from TV viewing point, sweeps looks so ugly

Unless sweeping a quick bowler.

Turn isn't what induces false shots if you cover it, SRT used to slog sweep Warne round the wicket over mid wicket, it's the bounce! Here the bounce isn't as much as Oz & is relatively risk free. With the ball stopping a bit the drive, push or flick is actually more risky.

 

Yes but Root also played the sweep with much authority. Did you see any false shots or chances when he was playing regular sweeps? Which is to say that if you can do sweep well - play it, not those cute paddle/reverse sweep or switch hits. They're not needed & should be avoided.

Hayden's 2001 series should be proof enough that sweep works amazingly well in the subcontinent.

 

Root has shown it.

 

SRT and Sehwag i.e our two best players of spin used to do it.

Sweep is the best shot even on a Turner.  Hayden in 2001 proved that.  I don't get why Indian batsmen don't play it.  

These days you have to master reverse sweep as well.

It is not, like I said SRT played Warne over mid wicket when he bowled round the wicket. Gatting, Gooch(?) swept India out of finals. Hayden kept on sweeping India in 2001, Cook/KP swept India out of the game in 2012 & now Root. It isn't just one match, it's a whole series.

Pujara is using his feet.

Kohli opened the face of the bat for a turning ball, he was almost out trying to reach out and playing it midwiicket a couple of balls earlier. What a bad technique to play classical off spin. Rahane got out on a full toss, was shaky from the beginning

Pant plays it pretty well and is good at chosing which ball to sweep

Yes Indeed I said it in the match thread that I've seen only Pant & Kishan play slog sweep effortlessly like how overseas guys do.  That's what makes them good & watchable.
