Amidst all the hara-kiri in the defeat at Adelaide, or Chennai for that matter, a point that often gets overlooked is what makes a team? Is it the ability to crush opponents when on top, just the ability to start every innings on the front foot & play driving on the up all day long? Or is it something more subtle yet very obvious & visible?

 

There's a common string in every major loss under Kohli, be it the 2017 CT finals, the 2019 WC finals or the innumerable test drubbings away. The one thing that alludes this potentially ATG cricketing nation's potential, the one thing that defined the the best from West Indies then Australia.

 

What could it be? If it's so obvious then surely we must've tried it at some point in time? Is it just Kohli or is it he entire team? What if there's something even worse up on the horizon!

Inability to change plans mid way is a big issue with Kohli.

 

And he always manages to choose 1 or 2 wrong players in the playing 11.  Very rarely chooses the correct team. Seniors getting preference, rather than the most effective player for the playing condition, is the main reason for this.

 

A motivating leader, who can bring the most out of his team members, is also missing.

 

Captain Rahane has all the above qualities.

Ability to stay in the game even when the chips don't fall in your favor. Teams led by Kohli are not particularly good at it. Which is why if we ever lose the toss and bowl first under Kohli in SENA, the game is pretty much a write-off. 

 

Kohli as a captain is fine only as long as he has overwhelmingly better resources than the opponent and the plan A is working. If either of those things are missing, you can more or less forget about winning.

The arrogance he was displaying in the post match press conference ... there is little chance that he will learn from the mistakes of this test.

 

We may still win though because our bowling is good and the young batsmen are fighters.

I don't like Kohli's plans on the field as well as how he chooses batting order.  Too much method,  no natural flair & no funky moves.  I simply don't enjoy watching him..  So predictable. 

He was seeing how Jimmy was reversing vs RHB but he still didn't promoted Pant or Sundar to change things up.  They didn't even try to divert leach off his length. 

Bess was bowling normal wayward off spin & he still didn't charge him down the track..  There was zero chance of stumping against Bess. 

The less said about bowling changes & field placement is better...  No bouncers,  no cutters no cross seam.  Absolute flat.  He also didn't have short leg for long when Root was batting in Ist inns..

Kohli was never a renowned tactician. He always relied on performances of the key players. I've never ever seen an inspired field placement, change of strategy/tactics when things go differently. Pretty one dimensional. However, he can look like a world beater when things are going our way and the players are extra motivated when that happens.

 

Think of Rahane where he sent Pant at 3 down at Sydney and Brisbane and he simply changed the entire momentum of the game. Rahane literally resurrected the Pant's career. In Chennai (and Australia) it was pretty clear that we needed lefties in the top order. If Kohli was imaginative, he may have tried to send Pant/Sundar up the order just to mess up England plans. 

 

It felt like we were waiting to be slaughtered on 5th day. You could predict what was happening even without watching. The same line up, the same shots, same pattern that we're accustomed to for the past 6-7 years. The lesser we speak about the bowling tactics, the better it is. Selection blunders, wrong field placings, what not! Look at how Joe Root deployed in and out fields after the first 5 overs of the match.

 

I'm just fed up of this incompetence. This team has some real good players - teams like Australia would kill to have the likes of Gill, Ashwin, Bumrah. Kohli is just doing injustice to himself and others in the team by captaining it. We SHOULD have won South Africa, England tours in 2018. We lost because of some bad planning, bad selection and terrible execution. It's like watching RCB in national colors. High time for a change if we're to have any chance for 2023 world cup or the world test championship.
