Pant is obviously the best Indian cricketer but yesterday that shot was suicidal and no you can't equalize that to intent.

Jayasuriya was also criticised a lot for his inconsistency so there's no problem in people criticising Pant.

He hasn't yet made his mark in LOIs, especially considering what he is capable of, in t20s he has been downright pathetic and in ODIs he does not have much to show as of now but obviously he will improve.

He has to open like Sehwag and Jayasuriya

He doesn't even do that for DC being a captain. He infact pushes himself down the order for some reason.

to do the tough job as captain/senior player.Besides Shaw/Dhawan are specialist openers.

He can come one down at the least. If he wants to hone the game he has to do in the IPL.  Competition is higher for opening slot in the Indian side. Dhawan/Rohit/Rahul then we have noobs like Ruturaj, Shaw. Unless it is considered a 'strategy' there won't be any attempt to push him up the order. Pant vs top bowlers inside the power play? Unpredictable.

he was an opener at India U19 level. So has experience of doing it.

Unpredictable yes but match winning on his day. And more chances of getting away with mishits due to field up.

if Shaw wasnt there,Ponting might have considered it. Hes another similar player

punter should try having both open and going bang-bang. won't come off always, but it will be spectacular when it does

It is the easiest to score runs as an opener in LOIs.. That's why every player including Kohli has been eager to open for India as well as their franchises. The fact Pant has been more than willing to take the middle order role is a blessing for us. If he plays the way he did in the 2nd ODI at no 4, India will have nothing to worry about because that is a role very few people in the world can do with such a high strike rate

In 2nd ODI he scored 61 runs of his 85 runs against spinners. Against Markram even he struggled.  He did not face a single ball from Ngidi during his 85. Mostly spinners and their noob bowlers. If Pant tries to swing from hips against cummins, starc,  KG rabada, nortje, Boult him getting out is more likely scenario than him giving us any rapid start.  Kishan looks a better option at the top.  I back Kishan there. He also goes from the get go. But he is a bit more calculative.

Kishan again I don't trust with high quality pace bowling and his offside game isn't great yet
