In North America the sports are based on seasons - football for fall and winter (till Feb), NBA/Basketball takes over in Spring till June, Baseball is the summer pastime, NHL goes along in the background - the least famous of the major league sports. Then you have Golf, which is followed quite heavily. When you add in Tennis, NASCAR, athletics etc., there's simply no room for other sports. Even college football and college basketball is quite popular here. Soccer is considered a girl sport in US and women soccer team has more following than men's team. MMA has picked up in popularity a lot, and Pickleball is the fastest growing sport! Even F1 couldn't crack US market, and FIFA has failed for more than 30 years now. rollingstoned 1

Majority of the folks consider it a girl sport. Talk to most of the folks here and they go with "I need to take my son to Baseball/Basketball/Hockey game and girl to the soccer tourney". It's ingrained the way majority think. They may say otherwise but they don't take soccer as a serious sport. cricketfan28 1

I'm all for boxing, but MMA is way too brutal, and there're so many minor and unofficial leagues where there're practically no rules and almost operate like a fight club. cricketfan28 1

Whenever Messi plays, the ticket prices get jacked up 10 times but it's mostly folks who follow soccer already. Messi is the new Beckham with more global appeal. But people's perception about soccer as a sport hasn't changed much.
