Dunno about salary from national association. Jamie Dwyer used to get 150,000 Euros per season playing for a Dutch club some 15 years back, top women players some 60,000 Euros (LINK). Many international players, including Indians play club hockey in Netherlands, Belgium, Germany. So enough to make a living.

How can you compare it with an old, established league like NHL. Before 2000s, there wasn't much money in cricket either. Volleyball too has less money but popular. Dunno about the various rugby codes.

I was doing a spanish speaking class in UC Berkeley just for fun and there was a kid in there from Holland. Everyone was asked their favorite sport in spanish and he said his was field hockey.

 

I always thought he was kidding but now thinking back maybe he was telling the truth.

Ultimately our people need to get behind non-cricket sports, fill the stadiums, stream or watch on TV. 

 

We must be more than a one sport country. We don't watch ISL because there are better quality leagues in Europe, fine. But that can't be an excuse when a hockey league comes up. Or kabaddi, badminton...

IPL can easily double the salary cap of each team but they won't do it.

 

Just imagine a cricketer making 35 crores in a single season of IPL. Life is set.

 

Why don't BCCI invest some money in the welfare of the country is beyond me!!

million usd is bit stretch to these franchises to dish out. While they make billions.

But potential is there, India should take the initiative.

 

Many rugby codes have successful leagues running for decades.

ISL is trending downwards.I thought Hockey league is a failure. Not sure.

Hockey is more global than kabaddi. India has a rich legacy in international level, good team now. Will always be part of Olympics. 

 

Hockey stadiums can fill anywhere between 10k to 25k (full house in Kalinga in Pro League matches), more space for sponsors unlike indoor sport like kabaddi (5k capacity say).

 

As much as I dislike the man, hockey needs an ambitious guy like Lalit Modi to kickstart the league.

Compared to field hockey - ice hockey is a brutally violent sport. They just share the name. The size of the ice hockey players and the speed at which they skate is terrifying. They have tried to make it less violent but before it was truly scary. 

 

Before you skate with your head down and you were inviting a hit from the "enforcers" like Kasparitis or Stevens(truly an enforcer).

 

Eric Lindros was big and 240 lbs.... and delivered big hits but he played some offense and he skated with his head down.. here are two of the hits on him by two players themselves around 220 or 230 lbs, the second of which I don't think Lindros mentally recovered from.
