"I'm going to say 3-1 to Australia" - Ricky Ponting backs the Aussies to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has predicted the Aussies to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by a 3-1 margin later this year. India and Australia are set to face off in a highly-anticipated five-match series, with the former looking to win a historic third consecutive series Down Under.

 

 

Australia have lost their last three series against India but did manage to beat them in a one-off clash in 2023 to win the World Test Championship (WTC). The two heavyweights are favorites to make it to the final of the current cycle as they are placed at the top of the table for now.

"I'm obviously going to tip Australia to win and I'm never going to tip against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be some bad weather somewhere, so I'm going to say 3-1 to Australia," Ponting said in the recent edition of the ICC Review.

 

The 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is scheduled to begin from November 22 onwards in Perth. The second Test in Adelaide is set to be a pink-ball contest while the series will end with the New Year's Test in Sydney.

 

Australia had a dominant home record against India up until the 2018-19 series. The Men in Blue came close at times to record a win or two, but they struggled to go the distance.

 

However, the new-look Indian Test team instilled with aggression has made a huge statement by recording successive series wins on Australian soil, with the most recent one in 2021 arguably being their most iconic win away from home.

Ponting spoke about how the India-Australia clashes in recent times have been evenly contested, along with some iconic matches and moments that have led to the rivalry being placed right on top in cricketing folklore.

 

"That's when I think India seemingly really started to stand up to the fight and say, OK you're playing against India now. This is a different Indian team, we've got different leaders and different players and we're going to do it whatever we can to beat you guys - whether it's in India or in Australia," Ponting said in the same interaction.

"I've said for the last couple of years now, Australia have always had a fierce rivalry with England, obviously, and a very strong rivalry with South Africa. But I think India is now sitting right on the back of what an Ashes clash is like and probably overtaken the rivalry with South Africa," Ponting concluded.

Both teams are heading into a major transition in red-ball cricket, which marks the upcoming series of great importance across several counts.

we can win again.our FTBs like Rohit and Gill will fare  better in Australia .we have to sort out our bowling though .Shami has to be fit  otherwise or 3rd and 4th seamer are very weak.we need somebody else other Jadeja for Australia and i have no clue who that is,hopefully this seasons Ranjis will give us an answer.

Still plenty of time for the series. Want Kuldeep, Shami and Bumrah to hit the nets, practice batting and become all rounders by the time the series starts.

Go with 4 bowlers for Perth test lone spinner in Kuldeep otherwise no way to win that game imo.

Spinner has to be able to bat. Kuldeep will be useless. Its one of Ashwin/Axar/Jadeja/Sundar alongwith 4 pacers. Kuldeep can come in at Sydney or even MCG

He'll be useful on SCG/MCG. Not much else.

Last time Lyon destroyed us in Perth with a 7 fer... Pitch has sheer bounce for spinners to work with.  Kuldeep will enjoy those conditions.  He isn't particularly effective on a rank Turner or low tracks.

 

Ashwin Jadeja are more or less finished as spinners & are on their last legs.  I doubt Jaddu can even spin anymore... That guy needs a full domestic season to get those revs working otherwise Riyan Parag can get the ball to talk more than him atm.

Ashwin was struggling in India & don't think his body allows him to do overspin like 2020-21 Aus series..

He should be given a farewell in India

bhai even Moeen bhai has destroyed us in past in England,thats just our batsmen vs offspin. Doesnt mean our spinner can do same.

 

Our best bet in Perth is load up both batting and pace stocks. Best way to do that 3 genuine pacers, one pace AR and one spin AR. Specialist spinner will weaken batting without much benefit.

 

If Jaddu Ashwin are finished, we can move on to Sundar who did well last time and even Axar. Though practically atleast one of them will be there.

eh? Jadeja scored a ton from tough position IIRC. Kuldeep is at best Bumrah level as batsman. Just like we play one less seamer in India, we need to play one less spinner in Aus and that has to be one who cant offer much else. Sad for Kuldeep but he comes in only when we are playing 2 spinners in places like SCG

Only Head and Khawaja are left handers in Aussie line up.  There is more upside to go with superior batter Axar than Sundar.

 

I'll take both of them over Jadeja. I reckon his batting has fallen off a cliff too & age has caught up with his reflexes & his fielding is on a downward curve too.  Let's see how he goes in Duleep Trophy if he plays.

He did have decent Eng series. Is always poor in T20Is so thats no indicator. Will wait for BD series.

Thala dhongi has stopped trusting him with the ball too that didn't used to happen.

Barely even bowled in WT20 as well.. probably he is at his absolutely lowest point as a pure bowler.
