Will Rishabh Pant eventually move to no. 4 ? Jurel to keep ??

Recommended Posts

Honestly other than Pant, not a single batsman looks good enough to dominate in variety of conditions.

Had some hopes from Sarfraz but the way he struggled against Santner, also makes me skeptical about him.

I can sense Pant will follow what  Sangakkara did and will become no. 4 batsman and keeping duties will go to Jurel, who himself looks a very solid prospect so far.

Pant looks to be our only hope of having  a 50+ averaging batsman at no. 4.

4 should be the steady reliable batsman who stitches long partnerships. Pant is the exact opposite of this archetype. Unnecessary pressure on him might ruin his natural game too

If Sarfraz isn't good enough, try other domestic performers for number 4

Sarfaraj should get the full series against Australia before deciding his future.

Rahul.will play first 2 test, will fail and Sarfaraj will get 3 tests.and he will be dropped again

Nah 4 is high for Pant. Agree about Pant giving up gloves to Jurel . Gill should move to 4 and India should find some solid number 3.

Sai Sudarshan might be a good no 3. Has the solidity required from the role.

Agree on No.4 being too high for Pant. Gill should move to 4.

I like Gill, the most gifted batter we have in this generation in terms of shotmaking.

But very very doubtful how successful he will be, way too many issues in technique and temperament although he has shown improvement in temperament.

Still mad at him for throwing away his wicket in the WC final. I was really hoping that he would score big.

Jurel at no 4 could also work, Pant can be his natural at no 5/6.
I hoped Gill to become future no. 4, but his severe weakness against spin is now a big cause of concern. He too may end up going KL Rahul's way.
Maybe, Gill can be brought back to opening along with Jaiswal. Sai Sudharshan can bat at 3, Jurel at 4, Pant 5 and so on.

Pant is best left in his current position. Technically he is better than most others and in all conditions as his numbers show. He is one of the few Indian batsmen in the current team averaging 40+ in the last 5 years. However he also has the fire and the touch of the madcap which on its day can win a game from an impossible situation. On other days, he is going to look silly throwing his wicket away for no reason. You need a more stable temprament at 4 who can dig in for long innings when required. I think as he gets older he might develop more of the long innings mindset in which case moving him to 4 might be an option. For now, of all the issues within the team, I don't think Pant's position or role is anywhere near the top of the list of concerns.

Jurel can certainly be tried as a pure batsman competing with Sarfaraz, Kohli etc but so far his sample size is quite limited and he has to be tested in a wider range of bowlers and conditions to assess.

I wasn't really sure of Jurel when I first read it mainly because hadn't seen him on any SENA pitch.

But I watched his full innings ball by ball today. Came to bat in 3rd over against Boland and Neser on a green pitch and ball was moving a lot. These were near unplayable conditins for batting.

His judgement of his off stump, his defense and his temperament were just impeccable, was lucky on one occasion just.

I am convinced we have a gem at our hands. Both him and Pant can play in the same XI.

Now its all in hands of management to give him proper run.
