Don't know if it is foul play or what....but Ding's body language and approach yesterday vs. today ----the difference is night and day.

 

Don't think he is the kind of character who would cheat.

 

But what is to be noted is that the Chinese ambassador to Singapore was the chief guest for today's game.

Tbh I had the same feeling but didn't want to come out as a sore loser (like Nepo, Kramnik...people I detest). Anish couldn't make sense of Ding's game today, he and Leko were saying he was playing like a 3000 rated guy. Not saying these super GMs aren't capable of such play at their best, but after the loss yesterday, his general form this year? Tbh can't blame Gukesh as well, he was up against an unstoppable force. 

 

I'll just put it down as Ding having played the greatest game of his life, especially considering the match situation. Strength and prayers for our lad.

Just that I am not comfortable to see our naive folks up against Chinese cut-throats. Soviets had a similar reputation earlier.

I wish what you are saying is false, because if it is true than Gukesh has no hopes. 

 

Ding has a history of comebacks and is very very strong player.  Like I mentioned previously in this thread - he had a streak of 100 unbeaten games in classical chess. 

 

He is equally strong in rapid only second behind Magnus per the FIDE rankings.

 

I know CCP will see the geopolitical angle to this, as to how a rising India is going to ensure that this century is India's century and the India will be the stronger actor in Asia by mid century. 

 

I hope none of this is true.

 

But its hard to miss Ding's complete turnaround in 24 hours. It is not normal.

A few of instances of cheating against our athletes in Asian games in China. We are a minnow in medals' tally vs. China but even then.

 

I think that there's big chance that covid second wave (the deadly one) was CCP's attack against India...

 

North korea nukes are given by China. Pakistan also got nukes directly, indirectly due to china.

But it also has 75 % population that is of Chinese descent.

It is possible that being down in a do or die situation gets the best out of him. He kept doing it to Nepo also in the last World Championship. 

 

Unfortunately, Indian sportmen in general falter when under pressure. Not saying just about Gukesh, but we lost so many ICC finals and in Olympics, we had so many 4th place finishes makes me feel that many of our sports people lack the mental toughness required to level up their game when it matters the most.

My elaborate vacation plans to India / Singapore all had to be undone 10 days back  because I have to be the bearer of bad news for impending ramp downs in the Org that I am leading.  I would not have been in a happy state none the less given the match situation, even if did not have to cancel my travel plans at the 11th hour.

 

From my interactions with mainland people for nearly 19 years now, I can tell you that deception runs deep in their culture. 

 

How they behave externally, what they say, and what they end up doing - none of it tie up.

 

Thats why when all the " experts" and "fans" were sure of Gukesh dominating the match based on Ding's posturing , I knew and said many times here that it is not going to happen.

 

Ding further deceived by saying prepared only for 3 weeks, whereas Gukesh was vocal about preparing for about 6 months. 

 

Ding is obviously fibbing.

 

See how Ding's body language has changed 180 degrees.  Classic Chinese deception.

 

It will take more than a miracle for Gukesh to win now. 

 

Gukesh overestimates his position, gives alot of chances, so although my heart badly wants Gukesh to win, my head says he will blunder with over aggression to avoid the rapid play offs and allow Ding to retain the crown.

That's why he hasn't played much at all in the last year and even when he played, he tried to "underplay" deliberately to not reveal any of his secrets. I knew that going in to this match, Ding has completely out-prepared Gukesh.

 

What can work for Gukesh is if he puts Ding in a complicated situation for which Ding is not prepared. To his credit, Gukesh did it a few times, but Ding managed to survive most of the times. When Gukesh had to curb his aggressive instincts and just play out a calm game to get a draw, he played too aggressively. It's a fine balance between being aggressive enough to play out draws v/s being too aggressive and taking a chance, which Gukesh did.

Nakamura called it out as a blatant lie on his youtube channel. 
 

Nonetheless, I don’t think it effected Gukesh’s preparation, but it is obvious that the intent of Ding and team was to deceive. 
 

It will be very sad if Ding retains the crown, because he got a free pass and has never won a candidates or a classical tournament of this caliber. Gukesh crushed the candidates. 
 

But the most likely outcome will unfortunately be Ding retaining the crown with only 2 classical games left and Gukesh’s obviously high risk game that leaves him exposed against ultra positional players like Ding.
