Sometimes it does'nt matter.

 

Mike Hesson never played an FC game.  Was one of NZ's most successful coaches.

 

John Buchanan played 7 FC games with a batting average of 12.3.  One of the most successful coaches of all time, although with that Aussie team, probably a wooden dummy coach could have done about as well.  Mind you Ponting rated him, calling him key to 3 WC successes.

Exactly my point. Star players often don't make good coaches whereas gritty people with limited ability will bring the best out of others because they have struggled.

On the other hand we had Greg Chappell and Kapil Dev as coaches who did not immerse themselves in glory
