No, its not surname, its 'gotra'. Bharadwaj was a recognized 'rishi' long back and if you trace our bloodlines backwards, you will reach Rishi Bharadwaj ultimately. That means we are distant relatives from the same family. However, our surnames could be different.

Although the comparison is betwene apples and oranges islam and hindus .. one is religious philopshy and another is adherenets to another religius philosphy.. even here there is huge differene in scale.. We all etsbalishged that few region of Andhra has this practice but among muslims it's prevalent acorss the board duely santioned by their ism..
