Fog traps pollutants, doesnt create them

I am fine with pollution given the geography. But what I am pissed about is the astronomical cost of real estate in a place that becomes a gas chamber two months a year.

Pollution is everywhere in India but fog increases the pollutants multifold as they get trapped. If actual pollutants are 200. They will keep piling up at lower level and aqi will keep increasing.

People are living in these same conditions for decades now.

Outright shame that the govt is not tackling this on war footing. BJP govt is stupid not to give people a good dignified life like the CCP. No matter what they achieve economically, militarily etc. at the macro level - without addressing these things - progress is meaningless.

They have not even said what they are doing to curb it. Noone is expecting them to solve it overnight. They did a good job with the Yamuna cleaning. Astounded why they are so stumped by this that they can't even announce what is causing the pollution and how they plan to tackle it. They are killing entire generations of children in the capital. Beyond stupid.

Micro level infra improvement is important. It's doable and it will only benefit the ruling party.

They are not even talking about it. Environment minister is making excuses. Modiji yesterday had Mann ki baat but talked on other issues.

Opposition is also not bothered and focussing on irrelevant issues

Unless this becomes a votebank issue no one would do anything.

They are not killing anything.

Life expectancy at birth is rising at a fair clip. Delhi has the highest life expectancy across all states and union territories. Delhi has a higher life expectancy than low pollution Goa. No generation of children are being killed. This was also case in china and even uk during the industrial revolution in the 18th century. In both cases life expectancy increased.

Maybe the middle classes need to actively adopt ethanol blended fuel to reduce pollution. But considering that even this is unpopular people will punish the bjp if they actually implement pro polution policies. I remember when even strict implementation of chalan resulted in protests.

Modi knows this inside out. Just like the gov of punjab knows confronting stuble burning farmers is political suicide.

Very nice way of saying. Kuch nahi hoga. Keep living in polluted cities.

There are entire districts in northern kerala that dont even have a hospital. They have to goto Manglore.

Forget about Delhi. Mumbai the most polluted district in Maharashtra has the same life expectancy then Delhi. Mumbai also has higher life expectancy than least polluted places in Maharashtra like Amravati.

Access to medical facilities and nutrition trump pollution.

India needs to grow well and once life expectancy reaches 76 to 78, GoI needs to confront pollution. Beyond that point medical facilities and nutrition have a marginal effect.

Forget about pollution, GoI needs to target diabetes with gusto. Sugar is more toxic to Indians than pollution.

Once the patents for fat loss pills become lax GoI needs to aggresively push our generics to mass produce them.

And what will people do to reduce pollution themselves?

In the colony my grandmother lives aunties complained a lot when there was a ban on single use plastic. Its back with gusto despite being banned.

In london and nyc they brought in a congestion charge to reduce pollution. Good luck trying to implement that. Our people have issues with toll roads.

People need to understand:

Even if HYPOTHETICALLY cancer incidence rates are comparable in a more polluted region A to region B, that does not mean pollution is not a contributing factor to cancer in region A

1:  Region A may have factors relative to region B - such as better healthcare facilities and testing leading to more reporting.

2: Region A may have some extenuating factors that could be reducing (independently to pollution) the likelihood of cancer - different diet, more income, lifestyle factors, less alcohol / smoking etc.

3: Cancer reporting is not that easy.  Especially when it’s already metastasized and you are trying to classify its type. Yes, with thorough testing and in some complicated cases by elimination, u can find the primary but is that everything taken into account in those surveys and how reliable are those?

4: Cancer mutations are not always quick. Exposure multiple years back can absolutely be a factor in activating something at a later point,

5: If X, Y, Z factors are independently (relative to factor W) reducing cancer risk, that does not mean you should not tackle factor W that raises the risk.
