Don't get your expectations too high up, people. Money rules. All this talk about patriotism and commitment to play for the country sounds good in speeches and books, real life doesn't work that way. He has the ODI captaincy carrot dangling for the Champions Trophy and following that the biggest bonanza of them all - the Champions League or whatever the hell it is called. If he is carrying niggles or is tired what better time to take a rest than a test series which is going to be watched by 500 people in the stadium and 500,000 on TVs. Advertising slots won't even sell for a fraction and visibility will be nothing in the heat and humidity of a tropical island. Dhoni has everything to gain by skipping the SL series and nothing to lose and has taken a pragmatic decision. He isn't the first one to do it and won't be the last. There will be lots following his path in the next few years. Test cricket will be reduced to 'A' teams competing so that the players can somehow hope to become T20 stars and rake in the Mullah.

You have articulated it very well T20 stars will rule (and IPL ka..ching, ka..ching $$$$$), and Test cricket - ah, who cares?

This is not just about Dhoni but test cricket! TEST CRICKET IS UNDER THREAT WE MUST DEFEND IT! Shocked many posters agrre with his decision to skip test matches. May as well scrap tests and just play 20/20 all year round. Good on you Dhoni for being focused on money and IPL. BRAVO.

True...besides ,he has competition for the ODI skipper slot from yuseless and Sehwag(hence the reluctance to skip the ALL IMPORTANT KITPLY and ASIA CUP) ...but no such risk while pulling out of tests!After all Kumble bhaiya is just keeping his seat warm for him.

And I dont think the BCCI trusts Yuvraj.:haha:

He is a coward and is out of touch with reality! He will get a back lash from this decision! Many fans will never forget this act of cowardness and treachery! When Afridi announced he was retiring from tests he was mocked mercilessley. I see no difference in Dhonis pathetic move:angry_smile: He should now also be mocked! Dhoni has played 14 tests in the last 18 months and he's not retiring from tests, just taking a break. He's got a constant back problem, and bruised hands so it's a medical break. The only coward here is dsr who is calling out a dedicated team player who's played non stop cricket for the past 18 months. What a drama queen.

Fact is BCCI just gave him a go ahead. Fact is, he felt he couldnt continue anymore so he took the first series off. I am sure if ODIs were played before tests, he would have taken a break in them He needs a rest NOW not 3 weeks after. If you cut your hand now, you bandage it today not after 3 weeks when it has become infected.
