Instead of Gambhir, VVS Laxman BCCI should appoint a coach who has coached Ranji teams .

A coach who has progressed from coaching a plate division Ranji team to coaching a top 5 Ranji team and has helped the team to win Ranji, Duleep,Irani,VH,SM tournament .

A coach who has been involved with IPl team or regional T20 tournaments.

The problem is players could dictate terms with coaches without stature. Even Kumble couldn't rally the troop.

Even in white ball formats, we were successful in the last 2 ICC tournaments only due to them being in the subcontinental conditions. The moment we stepped out of our comfort zone, we lost to Ireland and England.

Laxman could be a good choice because he was pretty good in bouncy conditions like Australia and our next 2 ICC tournaments would be in similar conditions.

Lechman could be a Sanath type figure who sounds very underwhelming in commentary but does a decent job when given a coaching gig because he seems non-confrontational and loel the type who doesn't rock the boat too much which might make him approachable for the players unlike a proper drill master type martinet. Opposite of someone like Neville in football who is a great pundit but sucked as a coach. Tactical credentials and ability to understand the modern game esp in white ball is a question mark so also what he understands about fast bowling where Indian coaches traditionally have had a view not favorable to anything other than swing bowlers and those who can maintain line n length which is the same cloth he seems to be cut from.

He refused the job before and even now said he doesn't like the travelling associated with it so isn't that keen on it. I don't mind giving him a role with the test team where the problem more than coach is the selectors using IPL eye tests to give people a chance.

Within india can't see anyone better than Pandit. Remember lalchand rajput and the effect he had on the 2007 team too very underrated coach.

VVS Laxman’s man management is exactly what the Indian Test team needs right now compared to Gautam Gambhir's intense approach My main worry with Laxman though is his tendency to back conservative 130 km per hour medium pacers over raw genuine speedsters a lot like Dravid did Gambhir's biggest strength is his willingness to unleash genuine fast bowlers Still when it comes to the red ball setup I honestly believe Laxman would be a much better fit to replace GG Iam strictly talking about test cricket

SL series in 2 week's time. Do we have any idea what the XI will look like? Sai as #3? Will Jurel find a place? Pant at #5 or #6? What will be Sundar's role? Kuldeep will play? Reddy ko lekar kya plan hai?

So many doubts, can't go on like this. Sufficient time has passed since the retirement of Ashwin, Rohit, Kohli, Shami (officially announce nahi hua, woh alag baat hai). Why is our side not settled? When we were rebuiding our side post 2012, at least we went with a settled team, lost a lot but sabko apna role pata tha, and we benefited in coming years.

Idhar sab bhagwan bharose chal raha hai. No Sarfaraz because GG has beef with him, instead we select a sub-40 FC average product like Sai at crucial #3 spot. No planning here also, he was forced to play Suthar in Mullanpur because Jaddu was out injured. Itna hi bada visionary tha toh why didn't Gurnoor play there, instead went with PK.

Gg got no clue about test cricket coaching expecting 2-0 sl win the series

Pandit will turn 65 next month. Don't think he will be under consideration. Bharat Arun is 63, and great credentials, but BCCI has moved past him as well.

Because of so many conditions like age limit, Indian nationality only, who are our options? I can see likes of Rahane, Ashwin, Shami, Pujara becoming coaches at some point of time, but that is at least 5 years away from happening.

Dada, Yuvi, Nehra, Pathan are there....Dada is a fine mind with coaching experience in IPL as well as SA20. But has he thrown his hat in the ring in any capacity when it comes to our national team? He may be a better fit in administration. Options are limited, VVS, going back to Kumble? Doubt Kumble would want anything to do with that role after his humiliating exit in 2017. Yuvi seems to be content with his limited mentorship roles, waise bhi having heard him talk, don't think he should be handled test responsibilities.

Shastri GG never had any experience at coaching level to begin with.  GG was a mere mentor at KKR.  Shastri was man Manager at best... Even when you listen to him he has no tactical knowledge or any idea of domestic cricket.  Pure vibes kinda guy

But when we paired Shastri with Arun, it was good no? Tactical inputs even your assistant coaches and data analysts can pass on, and if the head coach isn't rigid, he will implement those.

GG has told many times that data is overrated, he doesn't believe in data. He let Himanish Ganjoo go when he took over.

I'd love someone like Johnathan Trott as our test coach and stick with GG for time being in LOIs.

Trott is the frontrunner for next Eng test coach job. Once he is locked there, will be with them for at least 4 years I think.

Players won't respect a domestic coach,  a big reputed foreign name might be the only way who has some coaching experience

Trott, Andy Flower should be top of the list.

Would have loved Trott in Indian set up, has worked with subcontinent side before... Gets really involved with the team.  England would benefit from him.

Next priority should be Andy Flower.   Another one with GOATed coaching credentials.

If you want a SENA expert then Mickey Arthur is believed to be a SENA specialist.

Like RSA did with Shukri Conrad.

But will a low-profile coach command respect from our stars, media, BCCI?

Conrad had a mediocre FC career, progressed up the ranks from bottom to top in their domestic (started off with a non-FC team !!!), even coached a side like Uganda in between, 2 decades plus ka process tha. Now he commands respect and authority there. As @rollingstoned said, Pandit fits this type of resume, someone who did the hard grind and tons of experience.

Quote

Conrad first entered the coaching arena during the 1999–2000 season, as coach of a non-first-class team, Gauteng B. He remained in that position until May 2002, when he was named coach of the Gauteng senior team (at the time branded as the Highveld Strikers).[7] He was in charge of that team for the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons, with the team winning the Standard Bank Cup during the latter, but after the introduction of franchise cricket for the 2004–05 season took over as the inaugural coach of the Highveld Lions team.[8] Conrad left the Lions in July 2005, instead being named to replace Peter Kirsten as the coach of the Western Province–Boland franchise (now known as the Cape Cobras).[9] He remained in the position until being sacked in April 2010, but during his five-season tenure took the team to three titles – the 2006–07 MTN Domestic Championship, the 2008–09 Standard Bank Pro20 (qualifying the team for the inaugural 2009 Champions League Twenty20), and the 2009–10 Supersport Series.[10]

In October 2010, Conrad was hired as Uganda's new national coach, with the Uganda Cricket Association using funds received from its inclusion in the ICC's High Performance Programme.[11] He replaced another ex-Western Province player, Barney Mohamed,[12] and had had previous experience in Uganda, spending a week in the country in June 2005 (during the South African off-season) to help the national side prepare for the 2005 ICC Trophy.[13] However, Conrad's time as head coach of Uganda was short-lived, as his contract was terminated by mutual agreement in January 2011. He nonetheless agreed to stay on as a member of the technical team for the 2011 World Cricket League tournament, under his replacement as head coach, Martin Suji.[14] In July 2012, Conrad was a candidate for the vacant Dolphins coaching position, but lost out to Lance Klusener.[15] His next major appointment came in April 2014, when he was named head coach of Cricket South Africa's National Academy.[16]

In January 2023, Conrad was appointed as the head coach of South Africa in Test cricket.[17] In April 2023, he was appointed as the coach of South Africa A cricket team, ahead of their tour to Sri Lanka.[18]

Arthur made Pooks play with no spinner in their home matches, then coached them online in some series. Naa bhai, he is just a big talker, but absolutely clueless about cricket in SC. Fell out with CA as well.

Flower is a great choice, especially for white ball.

From the 2010s batch, I think Rahane will be a fine coach. Tactical nous plus man-management.

Pujara, Ashwin, Saha, Umesh, Shami, Ishant, I am sure all of these guys can contribute in some capacity. But Rahane seems to be the complete package.

Also 2010s batch much more pleasant human beings than the pricks of 2000s. None of the ego clashes, bickering, victim mentality, racism/colorism, regionalism, jealousy.

Anyway, hope BCCI makes all these guys do the ICC coaching courses/programmes so that they have more options in the future. Maybe even assign some lower level coaching duties to them as well. For instance, I think Shami can work wonders as pace bowling coach, strength and conditioning (he adopted desi methods for that), even Umesh/Ishant who maintained supreme fitness. Or Saha as keeping/fielding coach, Ashwin as spin coach etc. Pujara also seems to be a sharp guy. Get these guys involved with A sides, juniors etc.

Amol Muzumdar? Just 51. Granted he doesn't have a resume like Pandit's, but he too has put in the hard yards and made progress along the way.

With the women's WC in his resume, he will also enjoy more stature and backing from BCCI bigwigs.

That's why I said Mickey is a SENA specialist only ..  Andy Flower is all rounder and probably tier 1 candidate that most boards love to rope him in.

I think only BCCI has potential to persuade this guy.  ECB for years have tried him.. Pooks had wet dreams of roping him in as well.

Indians analysts and coaches in general are not good tactically in sports... It's a harsh reality but it is what it is..  Same goes for rest of Subcontinent as well, they are even worse than us in this regard.

Innovation is an alien concept and so is risk taking in Indian society.  Psychologically it's a barrier..

There may be others suited for this job whom we don't know of who also fit this age profile. Even as fans off the top of the head we can only think of well known ones.

With a coach very often much of your opinion of them is going to be after the fact, you won't know a great deal of what's happening behind the scenes vis a vis their input on daily basis. For eg Gambhir likes batting depth is something we can clearly see. A lot of other assumptions we make will be predicated a lot on prejudices eg Shastris image until BGT when we all saw him only as a drunken clown.

Good shout. A guy like Abhishek nayar who became coach at a young age and retired early will also have a different perspective on the game.

Yeah. Nayar, DK are good choices as well. All eyes on guys like them who are mostly involved with IPL sides right now.

Irfan Pathan also had some success as coach/mentor for Kashmir.
