beetle Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Top cop succumbs to shootout injuries Winner of seven gallantry medals, Delhi Police Special Cell officer Mohan Chand Sharma, who was on Friday critically injured in a shootout with Indian Mujahideen militants in New Delhi, succumbed to his wounds. Sharma, 41, who led today's daring encounter at Jamia Nagar where five terrorists linked with the recent serial blasts in the country were holed up, received three bullet injuries on his abdomen, thighs and right arm. The inspector who was bleeding profusely was rushed to the nearby Holy Family hospital where he was operated upon and later put on life support systems. After battling with his severe injuries for nearly eight hours, he was declared dead at seven in the evening. "We have lost our best man," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh told PTI. Sharma, who is survived by his wife and two young children, has won seven gallantry medals including a President's medal this year. The officer who joined the Delhi Police as a Sub-inspector in 1989 was instrumental in the killing of 35 terrorists and the arrest of another 80 militants, police sources claimed, adding he had killed 40 inter-state gangsters and arrested another 129. ____________________________________________________________________________ Rest in Peace Mohan Chand Sharma.It's people like you who will save this country .

I wonder what sort of protective equipment our police and jawans get, when they're engaged in such shootouts. I certainly hope it isnt the same Khaki dress that they get all while. Does anyone know if they wear bullet proof vests?

He got shot in the chest and abdomen area. He wasn't wearing one.Infact he was not even in uniform.That was the risk he took prevent alerting the terrorists! He is a really big loss for the delhi police as he was the most successful cracker of terrorist cases.

Stiil, what a big loss for Delhi's police force. When most of the policemen are too chicken to even confront petty criminals, this guy took on deadly terrorists, without fear. Very sad!

He beleived it was a routine questioning when he was shot at. So in this case atleast we cant blame politicians. I still have faith in Delhi Police. For all their drawbacks they are a stellar unit and I do hope they can crack this case.

Rajiv Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 My R.I.P is actually for the family who will feel the aftermath of his death, I saw the mother's interview yesterday and she kept mentioning that all the formalities are just for political purposes, the flowers on a van etc are like 15 min fame and no one help them later. Its not just about money, but small things such as taking the son to the doctor or taking care of the aging parents I hope they create some type of trust fund where people can donate and frankly some of us internet warriors who show cyber bravado and lengthy posts can do something practical
