bharat297
At the same time that Sachin is getting hammered like this, we have MS Dhoni, who despite his amazing achievements in ODIs and T20s, has not done anything of note in Test cricket for a long time. If you compare what Dhoni and Sachin have achieved in Test cricket over the past 2 years (in a series by series average format, beginning with the series against SAF in 2006/07). Sachin vs SAF: Ave = 33 vs BD : Ave = 127 vs Eng : Ave = 38 vs Pak : Ave = 70 vs Aus: Ave = 70 vs SAF : Ave = 0 (only batted 1 innings) vs SRL : Ave = 16 Dhoni vs SAF: Ave = 26 vs BD: Ave = 104 vs Eng: Ave = 52 vs Pak: Ave = 72 vs Aus: Ave = 18 vs SAF: Ave = 29 (did not play against SRL) Why is it that despite the fact that Sachin has outperformed Dhoni not just in the past 2 years, but even in this Test match itself (even though they both did crap this match), that Sachin is being pushed into retirement? Many of you have used this perform or perish argument to claim that Sachin should be dropped. Well doesnt that argument apply to Dhoni (I am not saying he should be dropped, I am trying to prove a point here). The question is, do we just want a young team, for the sake of having a young team? Or do we want the best possible team. In my opinion, if you had to select the best XI test cricketers in the country at the moment , Sachin Tendulkar would still be in that. Unless the BCCI actually implements a gradual transition process between the current team and the next generation, we will be stuck with a bunch of T20 slogging specialists who dont have the concentration required for a Test match. Cricketics
both these players are best players in the country for the postion they are selected in every Indian test squad. who cares about the crappy opion of anti-tendlkarz and anti-dhonis. Link to comment
sharma
dhoni is in the team as a keeper, sachin is as our best batsman. yet he is only marginally "outperforming" dhoni - except against aus, everywhere else they have almost been equal. Link to comment
punjabi_khota
dhoni is a keeper. Link to comment
Shane
Dhoni bats way tooo down in the batting order, when dadi retires push him up and play an extra bowler Link to comment
Desi Cartman
Firstly, SRT is in the side as a specialist batsman not as a keeper Secondly, I dont think he should retire yet Link to comment
Sachinism
another pointless thread Sachin and Dhoni aren't fighting for the same spot anyway Link to comment
gs
Cant see how you can compare a specialist wicket-keeper to a specialist batsman?!? Dont they have different yardsticks to measure their performances?!? I think Dhoni can be utter tripe with the bat, but can stay in the team as long as he can keep well. There are no such luxuries for SRT - he has to bat and score well consistently to justify his spot. Link to comment
bharat297
Guys obv. Dhoni is in the team for his keeping (he is our best keeper by a mile), but Im just saying that his batting has been spectacular whereas Sachin's despite the last series (ignoring the 1 game he played in SAF) has been pretty good, yet not one word has been mentioned about Dhoni Link to comment
fineleg
1. becos MSD is a keeper - thats point #1 - big point 2. The others are fabulous, fabulouser and fabulousest etc. therefore they get more poojas done to them and get more brickbats also if they dont take us to safety/win as the case maybe. Link to comment

Well point no.2 is not really valid since none of these guys sought out the poojas, etc. I dont think any player loves the excessive attention of being an Indian cricketer that much (not even Sreesanth). As for point no.1, yes it is a big point, but the fact is that Dhoni is a keeper in both Tests and ODIs, yet Dhoni the batsman in ODIs is the worlds best, yet Dhoni the batsman in Tests seems mediocre at best. Not one word was mentioned about that. Instead, he is closer than ever to being India's next Test captain. Link to comment
jf1gp_1
Yuvraj is a must start in ODIs yet no where close to finding a permanent place in tests ? Dhoni is a good keeper i personally like Kartik but not for a second will i think of playing anyone but Dhoni as keeper in test. The OP compares Dhoni with Sachin as batsman, its like comparing sachin the leg spinner with kumble and asking why noone is talking about Sachins failure as a bowler. Link to comment
bharat297
No its not ... Because Sachin is a part time bowler ... Dhoni is not a part-time batsman. Besides, never in any of these posts did I say that Dhoni should be dropped or anything. I think Dhoni is an excellent keeper, and deserves his place in the Test side. My point was that, in the lead up to this series. The form of several Indian players was questioned. Yet not even one word was mentioned about how Dhoni does not perform as well in tests as in ODIs. The Outsider
Dhoni's test batting has really plummeted. If he wants to captain the side he'll really need to pick up and improve otherwise his spot will always be questioned despite his superb keeping. Link to comment
DomainK
Dhoni is not only a fast learner, but also a hard working guy. And he is very well aware of his limitations and I am sure he wont take long before starting to make significant contributions to batting in tests. He should be given the captaincy when Kumble retires. Link to comment

But his keeping is superb and his captaincy inspiring so even if he has to drop himself down to number 9 it's good enough for him to hold his place. Link to comment
