The Outsider Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I know there might already be threads on Mishra but I am feeling like a proud talent scout for some reason today. The delivery to get Clarke, one of the best players of spin bowling, was mind blowing. On a pitch where batsmen have already started expecting turn, it was the dog that did not bark which got Clarke. It was a Warne like dismissal and if this guy is given chances to display his charisma, he is a 300 test wicket taker. I'll write more when I sleep this out for some time and satiate myself of watching classic leg spin on youtube by Mishra.
flamy Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Whoa! 300 test wickets? That's a brave one, Prof.
The Outsider Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 Whoa! 300 test wickets? That's a brave one' date=' Prof.[/quote'] If Harbhajan can get 400 then for Mishra, if given the right chances, 300 is a conservative number. That was the best spell of leg spin I have seen since Warne retired.
DomainK Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Good talent. But 300? You are going too fast.
flamy Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I didn't watch the match and I remember what you said about Sehwag. So, this is just awesome news! :icflove:
The Outsider Posted October 18, 2008 Author Posted October 18, 2008 With the amount of cricket being played a mediocre bowler like Lee(with the exception of the last year) will end up with close to 400 wickets..................
DomainK Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 With the amount of cricket being played a mediocre bowler like Lee(with the exception of the last year) will end up with close to 400 wickets.................. By calling Lee mediocre, you belittle our achievements against him?:D He is the front line bowler of the official ODI champions and the unofficial test champions. He can not be mediocre, can he?

He can not be mediocre, can he? I am not talking about ODIs at all.....Lee is a superb ODI bowler but has been a mediocre test bowler with the exception of the last 1-2 seasons. It might be my bias but I think good wrist spin, genuine pace, and reverse swing are key to winning tests on even the flattest of pitches and with Mishra we've got one of those key areas covered.
msb1991 Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Calm down everyone! Mishra bowled one good spell, let's not go nuts.
Lord Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 not to spoil the fun,i know mishra has done very wellbut he doesnt seem to be here to stay.there something wrong with him.he doesnt turn the ball enuf n balls too flat.piyush chawla had same problem.i feel in a year, mishra will be found out. i'd love to be wrong though
Ram Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 I am so looking forward to seeing the highlights, so desperately want to see Mishra in action.
Sachinism Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 Forget the wicket taking delivery, the way he bowled to Clarke the whole way was brilliant, Clarke really looked clueless, me and my cousin were laughing at this so called, "excellent player of spin" Mishra really did look awesome, he settled in really quick, consistently put the ball in the right areas and the Aussies were really made to struggle

Those who watched him bowl today (I mean LIVE and not highlights or text commentry) will quickly realize that here is an answer to the question - what happens when kumble retires. The way he planned his entire spell was just fabulous... He is a thinking bowler. He tries to set up the batsmen before delivering the wicket taking delivery. Unlike Bajji or Piyush, who generally attack every ball and go about their task without any plan, this guy mishra takes time to read the batsmen's style of play, identifies their weak points by bowling some trial sort of deliveries and when he knows he's set up the batsman, he bowls the wicket taking ball. Just look at the way he setup Katich... starting from the 2 overs before he actually picked him. Over no. 18 - he bowls 5 dot balls, all of them flighted, including one confident appeal. Katish takes a single off the last. Over no. 20 - a maiden, almost all balls flighted, trying to figure out which stroke katich is least likely to play. Now comes over no. 22 - bowls a widish delivery to start the over and gives away 4 runs. Who cares? His objective is something else. Bowls the next 4 balls everytime flighting and preparing katich mentally to expect all deliveries to be flighted and not turning much. Having set him up, he now bowls the killer delivery which turns more than katich expected, thereby inducing an inside edge that goes on to hit the stumps... even if it dint take the inside edge, the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps... bingo.. mission accomplished with the 18th delivery of his test career. This is the important quality required from a test bowler and he has it in him. He may get carted around a little bit, but then he'll come back and pick up the wicket. Not sure whether he can have the luxury of setting up the batsman in an ODI or T20. He may not be successful in those formats of the game, but can definitey go places in test cricket. The amount of turn he extracted from a day 2 wicket stands testimony to this claim.. Wait and watch.. the next 3 days, the aussies are going to hop and pop facing this guy... flamy 1

umpire Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 sachin_rox, you have no clue about leg spin. It does not matter how much you can turn. Leg spin is about 1) Accurate bowling, building pressure 2) Subtle variations 3) Use of Crease for creating angels. If you have those, you have ingredient to be good bowler.

If you have those, you have ingredient to be good bowler. u mean shane warne 'd be the same bowler even if he didnt turn the ball the way he did?i dont think so! leg spin may be about the things u said, but turning it is an imp.part. dont give me the example of kumble.he's a different bowler n has different strengths.a normal leg spinner needs to turn the ball! u can bowl flat in odis, but not in tests.also i dont think hes as accurate as kumble or warne
umpire Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 >u can bowl flat in odis, but not in tests.also i dont think hes as accurate as kumble or warne again no clue, Leg Spin is about subtle variation, varying flights. The turn is always good. Yes Warne turned a lot. But did he only turn the bowl?? Even Bahutule turns the bowl, Sachin turns a lot, he is good leg spinner. Most most most important aspect is keeping the pressure, building it, if you can turn thats good, you always keep batsman guessing. Shane Warne most wicket came from flippers, top spinners where he set them up with turning deliveries.

umpire Posted October 18, 2008 Posted October 18, 2008 >u can be successful in long run by either being relentlessly accurate or turning the ball n have variations.mishra is neither here nor there totally wrong. Mishra showed lot of variation, he gave ball the rip, flighted and he did turn few from round the wicket. You actually have to watch the game.
