Sachin rox, turning the ball big is definitely a very useful skill, but its not mandatory to be a successful bowler. You dont have to far for an example, Anil Kumble is a living example that you dont have to turn the ball to be able to take wickets.

i have seen mishra bowl in the IPL and turning the ball is not his problem.what i like about him is his arsenal of deliveries and his control over them.

Those who watched him bowl today (I mean LIVE and not highlights or text commentry) will quickly realize that here is an answer to the question - what happens when kumble retires. The way he planned his entire spell was just fabulous... He is a thinking bowler. He tries to set up the batsmen before delivering the wicket taking delivery. Unlike Bajji or Piyush, who generally attack every ball and go about their task without any plan, this guy mishra takes time to read the batsmen's style of play, identifies their weak points by bowling some trial sort of deliveries and when he knows he's set up the batsman, he bowls the wicket taking ball. Just look at the way he setup Katich... starting from the 2 overs before he actually picked him. Over no. 18 - he bowls 5 dot balls, all of them flighted, including one confident appeal. Katish takes a single off the last. Over no. 20 - a maiden, almost all balls flighted, trying to figure out which stroke katich is least likely to play. Now comes over no. 22 - bowls a widish delivery to start the over and gives away 4 runs. Who cares? His objective is something else. Bowls the next 4 balls everytime flighting and preparing katich mentally to expect all deliveries to be flighted and not turning much. Having set him up, he now bowls the killer delivery which turns more than katich expected, thereby inducing an inside edge that goes on to hit the stumps... even if it dint take the inside edge, the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps... bingo.. mission accomplished with the 18th delivery of his test career. This is the important quality required from a test bowler and he has it in him. He may get carted around a little bit, but then he'll come back and pick up the wicket. Not sure whether he can have the luxury of setting up the batsman in an ODI or T20. He may not be successful in those formats of the game, but can definitey go places in test cricket. The amount of turn he extracted from a day 2 wicket stands testimony to this claim.. Wait and watch.. the next 3 days, the aussies are going to hop and pop facing this guy...

a very good post..din watch the match but ur description abt how he bowled really says a lot abt Mishra..hope he goes on to get more wickets in this match and Shewthabh never really gets that much excited abt new players, so wen he does then there must be something in that player..lets all hope Amit Mishra scales the heights that we want him to

he looks good. for now. the crucial tests will be 1. when he gets to bowl at 70 for no loss 2. a left hander keeps on sweeping him if he doesnt get tired bowling long spells then, and if he builds up his upper body strength, he is likely to replace harbhajan till kumble retires.

That was a kick ass post by dinakkar and my supposed addition to my OP could not have added much more to it. The little I would like to add is that this guy is fearless. He doesn't mind or even on some occasions wants the opposition to go after him unlike our "premier Surd Turd". Hopefully he will be used as a test specialist as an attacking option like leg spinners should be and not thrown in the nonsensical cauldron of limited overs cricket where a Shoaib Malik is unrecognizable from Saqlain Mushtaq at times.

I think people are going over the board in praising Amit. Don't get me wrong, he bowled superbly yesterday and to some extend he had the luck with him. He surely puts a thinking cap on while bowling and this can be seen when Dhoni asked him to come around the wicket. He immediately outsmarted Clarke (Aus's one of the few better player of a spin bowler) by bowling him a googly straight away...Clarke expected a leg break out of the rough. But I would like to stop my praises right here and not expect more of a debutant. Many Indian players have show us the light at the end of the tunnel but very few of them have actually managed to cross the tunnel. I surely hope Shwetabh's claim of Mishra picking 300 wickets comes true:D

I won't make any predictions, but Mishra's bowling yesterday was the best an Indian spinner has bowled in a year. Since I DVR all of India's matches I usually watch a couple of balls and skip through Bhajji's overs...and over the past 1/2 a year I've been doing the same with Kumble. But I couldn't do that with this kid - because he bowled the way a good spinner does - flighting it up and extracting good turn...all at ideal line and length. Spin was finally worth watching again. I hope he keeps that up today.

Those who think Mishra can't turn the ball should shut the **** up and WATCH WHAT'S GOING ON. His first *full* spell today after the first hour and a half has him ripping it MILES. Not from the rough, but right from middle and off stump. White couldn't get NEAR his first few balls, then got an edge past slip to get off the mark. Anyone who thinks he can't spin it doesn't know what they're talking about.

He will be constrained by his lack of inches though. Tall leggies have this knack of tossing the ball up above the batsman's eyline and profiting from it. Kumble made a career out of it. One of the reasons why Mushtaq and Qadir had mediocre records despite possessing excellent control and variation.

I know there might already be threads on Mishra but I am feeling like a proud talent scout for some reason today. The delivery to get Clarke' date=' one of the best players of spin bowling, was mind blowing.
