suraj Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 JAJPUR: A woman in Jajpur was allegedly paraded naked and beaten up mercilessly by villagers after her son eloped with a girl from the same locality. The incident took place at Binjharpur — the constituency of Orissa's women and child welfare minister Pramila Mallick. Shantilata Khandual of Bangara village in Binjharpur was forced to move court after police allegedly refused to register a case. In her complaint, the 45-year-old woman alleged that police forced her to compromise with her attackers instead of taking action against them. The incident has not only exposed the callousness of police but also put the entire police department in a spot. Sources said the elder son of the woman eloped with a girl on November 24. The same day, some villagers attacked her when she pleaded ignorance about the whereabouts of her son and the girl. "They dragged me out of my house. Though I was screaming in pain none came to my rescue. I was paraded naked after they tied my hands and legs. One of them even urinated on my mouth. They left me only after I fell unconscious,'' she alleged. Shantilata said her experience at the police station was more traumatic. "Police asked me to compromise with my attackers when I went to the police station to lodge a complaint. This forced me to move court,'' she said. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Boy_elopes_mother_paraded_naked/articleshow/3785695.cms Another reason I can't sleep at night
Gambit Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 I.n.d.i.a. Why are you stereotyping the whole nation based on actions of a few bad apples Arundhati?
punjabi_khota Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 Why are you stereotyping the whole nation based on actions of a few bad apples Arundhati? :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Her first reaction to terror strikes was not "I.S.L.A.M"
DomainK Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 We dont really need Pakistani terrorists to destroy us now, do we? Unfortunately police have to respect the local opinions. If they dont, the politicians in power would sack them. Politicians hardly ever go against popular local beliefs, however grotesque and barbaric they are. Because it hurts their vote banks. That the problem with democracy. If people are bad, they elect someone who would support them in the bad things. So if a mob burns down a woman to make her a sati, police is asked to cover it up. Why bother to annoy a group of people for one woman who is already dead?
Cricketics Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 this happens regularly in Indian villages. nothing much get noticed or publicized

The Outsider Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 A large part of India is still in the dark ages and a lot of men in these places have the mentality of the taliban whe it comes to women. Anyways ...what do you expect from a part of the country where female infanticide is very common? Not only female infanticide....child marriage is major problem...there was an article in India Today on it and some of the stories were terrible to read....the helplessness of some of these women/kids was frustrating.
