IPL franchises will 'miss' Pak players Agencies Posted: Feb 03, 2009 at 1015 hrs IST Karachi: Pakistani cricketers' absence from the second season of the Indian Premier League has left the affected franchises disappointed with their top officials saying that the Twenty20 event would be poorer without players from Pakistan. The Pakistan foreign affairs office barred the country's cricketers from travelling to India for IPL because of "security concerns". The BCCI and IPL officials, Niranjan Shah and Lalit Modi said the absence of Pakistani players would not make a difference to the league's following. But the franchises felt otherwise. Joy Bhatacharya -- the team leader of the Kolkata Knight Riders team for whom Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, Salman Butt, Mohammad Hafeez played last season -- said the team would miss the Pakistani flavour this season. "We are not just a team we were like a family and Shoaib and Umar are not only good cricketers but popular among their teammates as well at the Knight Riders. We will surely miss them a lot," he told Geo TV. Similar feelings were expressed by Amrit Mathur, the CEO of Delhi Daredevils. "We are going to miss the Pakistani players because they were key members of our team," Mathur told the channel. "Shoaib Malik in fact was a very important member of the side and very cooperative we will miss his presence. One would have liked Pakistani presence in the IPL," he said. Fraser Castellino, the CEO of Rajasthan Royals, said he was disappointed but nothing could be done if the government didn't allow Pakistani players to play in the IPL. "Definitely we will miss someone like Sohail Tanvir who performed so well for us or even Kamran Akmal. It means we have to reorganize our team and plans for the new season," Fraser said. Another team official said Pakistani players had added value to the IPL but the league would continue to prosper without them. Niranjan Shah said there was nothing the Indian board or IPL could do since the players were not allowed to travel to India by their foreign ministry. But most of the former Pakistani players supported the government decision pointing out that in current scenario it was better to avoid going to India. "It would be wise if our players are patient and wait for relations to improve between the two countries," former Test captain Rashid Latif said. Holysmoke
Pakiz still eager to play in IPL Their government has prohibited them from travelling to India, their IPL teams don't think they're worth the trouble and yet Pakistan's cricketers are desperately keen to play in the cash-rich tournament in India. Thursday's IPL announcement that the contracts of five Pakistan players were terminated and two others suspended came as a body blow to Pakistan's cricketers. Sohail Tanvir and wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, whose contracts were suspended by the Rajasthan Royals, told the Hindustan Times that they were hoping the situation would improve sufficiently to allow them to return to action in the IPL soon. "It's a sad situation for Pakistan's players. We are eager to play in the IPL and hope the PCB and the government will soon meet to discuss the matter," said Akmal from Lahore. Tanvir pointed to the fact that Pakistan is starved of international cricket and that the Pakistan Cricket Board is struggling financially. "We have central contracts, that's fine. But we will lose out on huge amounts of money for not playing in the IPL," said Tanvir. "I have a three-year contract with the Rajasthan Royals and I am really clueless at the moment. I will speak to my manager to see what can be done." Tanvir, who has a 'Grade B' contract, is paid Pak Rs 1.75 lakh (INR 1.1 lakh) per month by the PCB. "I will lose $125,000 (Rs 60 lakh) for missing one edition of the IPL," said Tanvir. Akmal, whose 'Grade A' PCB contract pays him Pak Rs 2.5 lakh (INR 1.56 lakh) per month, will lose $150,000 (Rs 72 lakh) for not figuring in the IPL. The contracts of Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt and Younis Khan were terminated while Mohammad Asif has already been released from his contract. http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=Cricket&id=40529fd6-e504-4763-b7fe-8a7f5d1d1a24&MatchID1=4922&TeamID1=4&TeamID2=2&MatchType1=1&SeriesID1=1244&MatchID2=4893&TeamID3=1&TeamID4=5&MatchType2=2&SeriesID2=1235&PrimaryID=4922&IsCricket=true&Headline=%E2%80%98We+are+eager+to+play%E2%80%

coffee_rules
Poor guys' date=' caught in the mindless politics between two countries.[/quote'] India has 3 options: 1. Surgical strikes in Pak - highly risky 2. Diplomacy - Tried and has not worked 3. Sanctions - only way to go without the other 2. Do you expect to maintain the baradari in this hostile condition? They are not poor guys, they play in English county or some other profession league and make money. No need to feel bad for them!

For instance, there many people who have families across the border, but have their visas denied due to current tensions. What have Pakistani cricketers to do with what their govt. is doing? If we want punish someone, it should be their govt, not ordinary Pakistani civilians.

Mr. Wicket
There is the concern of the trickle down effect and the money going to the wrong places (money to Pak players => spent at home once they get back => eventually through rogue gov't elements/"charities" etc gets into the hands of the terrorists despite the govt' BS about not having anything to do with aiding or permitting terrorism). Another reason could just be that nobody wants them right now, and so like most of the Bangla team they can sit on their arses and watch.
fineleg
Why should the Pakistani cricketers lose out on the financial windfall? Because when we invite someone to OUR home to play, it is a privilege, and we have the right to choose. If Pak has their Pak version of IPL then they can choose to deny us. You are talking as though this is a "discrimination" and injustice. It is not. It is as simple as we choose who we invite for our wedding or to our home etc. Personal preference, and bias is allowed there.
