will the IPL go ahead this year?.will a lot of scared foreign players withdraw making this years IPL boring?.the most important question though is whether we can prevent a lahore style attack taking place in all the 8 venues of the IPL-if we cant guarantee it then the IPL should be cancelled this year.

I hope yes, coz i need some sorta entertainment during my final sem :--D On a much serious note, lives are much important than cricket and if the players refrain from stepping foot in our country so be it, their fears are perfectly justified

IPL: Nagpur, Vizag new venues; match dates skirt voting D K Singh Posted: Mar 10, 2009 at 0843 hrs IST New Delhi: The Indian Premier League revised schedule sent last week, which avoids any clash with polling dates, has raised hopes for the Twenty20 tournament with the Home Ministry more amenable to the dates except for a few matches in certain high-profile venues like Mumbai where election-related security concerns are quite high. Fresh opinion of states has been sought while discussions with IPL authorities are underway. The tournament had come under cloud in the wake of the terror attack on Sri Lankan players in Lahore which raised concerns in the Home Ministry about the security aspect of the IPL tournament as it clashed with Lok Sabha election dates. With organisers drawing up a revised schedule from April 10 to May 24, the Home Ministry is learnt to be by and large fine with the revised dates, except a few matches to be held just prior to election dates. The Centre has decided to seek fresh opinion from states on the revised schedule after states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal sent clear messages against holding matches according to the original schedule. Nagpur and Visakhapatnam are two venues that have been added in the revised schedule while Ahmedabad is out of the itinerary. The venues drawing maximum security concerns are Mumbai and, to some extent, Hyderabad. The Home Ministry is learnt to have some reservations about a few matches in Mumbai where 11 matches have been scheduled in the revised plan. There are three phases of elections in Maharashtra from April 16 to 30l and there are at least three matches in Mumbai that fall too close to polling dates. The Centre, it is learnt, may prefer that these matches are either rescheduled in a manner that all are held in May or are moved to other venues. As of now, the IPL inauguration is slated for April 10 in Mumbai. Going by the the revised schedule, Chennai, Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Jaipur, Mohali and Bangalore are unlikely to pose much of a problem. Particularly, in Chennai, all matches have been scheduled after May 13, the day Tamil Nadu goes to polls. Of the matches scheduled in Hyderabad and Kolkata, there are doubts on a couple of them which are likely to be resolved through discussions with IPL officials.

No security for IPL in Bangalore No security for IPL in Bangalore Commissioner of Police, Bangalore city, Shankar Bidri said that the organizers of the Indian Premier League [images] will have to make security arrangements on their own when matches are played in Bangalore during the elections. When asked about the security arrangements during the IPL, he said that the city police is not in a position to provide security to the cricket matches at the time of the elections. "Our priority is the elections and we will deploy our entire force for the peaceful conduct of the polls," he said. Bidri said that in case the organizers need security from the city police then they could expect the same only after the elections. "I have conveyed the same to the Karnataka State Cricket Association," he also said. Home Minister V S Acharya when questioned about the same issue said that it would be better if the matches are held after May 16th due to security issues. "Like all other states, we too are not in favour of having the matches being played at the time of the elections," the Home Minister said.

Tamil Nadu not ready to host IPL matches Tamil Nadu not ready to host IPL matches 13 Mar 2009, 1314 hrs IST, PTI Print EMail Discuss Share Save Comment Text: NEW DELHI: The Union Home Ministry on Friday held a video conference with senior officials of the states where Indian Premier League matches are scheduled to be played next month following their demand for central forces to host the tournament. Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta held consultations with seven states including Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal during which he was apprised of the security problems for hosting the mega-event. The states are understood to have again told the Home Ministry during the 90-minute video conference that it was not possible to hold the Twenty20 matches without additional security personnel from the central grid. Barring Tamil Nadu, all other states have agreed to host the matches with a rider that at least five to six companies (500-600 personnel) of para-military forces are kept at the disposal of the state police for security related issues, the sources said. Tamil Nadu has outrightly rejected the proposal to host the matches in the state. After eliciting the view of the states, Gupta held a meeting with Home Minister P Chidambaram who will take a final call on the tournament beginning on April 10.
