Should sachin have played more cautiously??

Got no complaints with his batting. He was positive and his batting, entertaining. And might I add, a 35(144) (strike rate of 30) from Dravid on day 1 of a decent pitch was useless. Like I said in an earlier thread, he is not back and he is not the Dravid of 2002-2006. Knocks of ~30 SR on decent tracks only put pressure on the guy batting at the other end, as the onus is on the other guy to get runs.

Meh. They got a 50+ partnership didn't they ? It'd be kinda risky to play shots when Sachin was batting with a ~80 S/R at the other end. His job was to keep one end safe, and let the other guy go - and it wasn't that he was being stopped by the fielders or anything. He was taking it safe until Sachin got out, from where Laxman/Yuvraj/Dhoni filled in for Sachin but once Dhoni came in, he decided he ought to start scoring, and it led to the dismissal. Nothing wrong with how he batted, tbh. Just chose the wrong ball to attack.

^ This is a Test match and wickets were falling. He is not worried abt S/R - if he had batted at the same S/R but had not played the poor pull shot, he would have done his job of staying at the crease. S/R not too critical in this Test. NZ are the desperate ones to make it 1-1. We can play it at our own pace in this test.

Really? What exactly was so airy-fairy about that shot. The only mistake SRT made was the ball was a bit too close to his body and then it bounced a bit more than he expected. He played the exact same shot before too.
Find me one another shot in his innings that was well away from his body, to a ball that was 2 feet outside off-stump and rising..

Tendulkar was losing it 10 minutes before he was dismissed...kept trying to play that uppercut. But hey, good to see him playing like this. Looks like he's really enjoying himself. BTW, if Bhajji and Dhoni get a partnership I think Bhajji is easily going to outscore him. Bhajji's got 14 so far and Dhoni 9.

He can look for singles and put the not so good balls away can't he? We are not batting to save the game. We are not looking to bat time. This is day 1 and the pitch isn't a minefield. His batting today was indefensible.

He played the exact same backfoot drive before too. BTW, you can't look at the bounce off the pitch and then play that shot, and the ball was actually closer to his body that he'd have liked, not far from the body as your 2ft statement would suggest.

This one was a vertical bat shot to a ball that well outside off-stump and rising.

The point is which one was more riskier and more extravagant. And even then the previous backfoot drive was more away from the body. And I think this is the 3rd time I'm saying it, that one was a bit too closer to the body.

He did all that you asked. They were bowling very good lines and lengths. Sachin's a genius - we can't expect Dravid to play similar shots. Sachin got a few more bad balls because they were trying things with him at the crease. In the end, Dravid's was a good innings. He put away most balls on leg stump. He was severe against Vettori. Played well. Iain O'Brien and Chris Martin along with Franklin were bowling really well. Only Tim Southee was not very good and he didn't bowl much with Dravid at the crease.

He doesn't have to be a genius to do that does he? I fail to understand how you could term this innings as 'good' and that he 'played well'. Maybe that's what you expect from him. And severe against Vettori? The guy who bowled 2 overs? Wow.

Vettori took himself out because he was leaking runs. And Dravid was showing intent with Sachin at the crease - there were several singles taken with balls that were dropped close to the wicket. He was rotating the strike giving Sachin a lot of time to face the bowling.

FINALLLY the sense prevailed!!! Thanks.... some of these people really need to know is that in Cricket, its not the number of balls played that counts... all what matters are RUNS!! and to score runs, you have to use ur freaking BATT!! I rather see Bhajji make his quickfire 50 runs than Dravids 30 in 115 balls.... look at our opening partnership, just we were playing agressive, pitch looked flat and runs were coming easy... Dravid just made this pitch look like Grassy SAfrican pitch...

Really? Batting with Sachin, he took a grand total of 7 singles. This in a 90 run stand. I guess it was a 'good' innings after all. Since you think he 'played well' and have no problems with his approach, I'll leave it at that.

He faced approx the same amount of balls as SRT. (3 less) SRT made 62, he made 24.
You watched the game, I assume. So, you would know that the bowling was very very good, and that Sachin was playing some outrageous shots. No way would I expect Dravid to do that, and especially when there's a very good partnership going. Sachin played well away from his body a few times, and that ramp shot, he was deliberately trying to annoy Chris Martin by attempting it several times. Those cover drives, the shots through point (yes Sachin worshipper) were superb, and despite getting the same delivery, Rahul could only get a single. BTW, both were frequently getting beaten - its just that Sachin was in a very aggressive mood, so he put that behind him. Rahul was in the frame of mind that they should build a huge partnership before expanding his stroke range a little bit more - of course, thats what I think it is. There was a partnership of 90 because Dravid reigned himself in, and didn't attempt anything crazy. Plus, it was a psychological thing - he was caught off a no ball because he had a lame poke at it. Sometimes, these things play on your mind. Despite this, some of the flicks, the drives, the cuts off Vettori were all very pleasing to watch. He could've maintained a higher S/R but thats coulda, woulda, shoulda type stuff. I am not saying it was the greatest Dravid innings - but it wasn't as bad and as useless as you think it is. With regards to Bhajji getting his 50 by playing aggressively, look at the type of field setting he's getting against what Dravid was getting. Man, so many times tailenders outscore top order batsmen, that doesn't mean they're better - does it ?

Exactamundo...this thread also mirrors a parallel thread on Sehwag...people just cannot stop whinging.
Brought back up from the first page. Dravid puts in a better effort than some of our middle order both in terms of trying to bat time at the crease and score runs, and people are whining and taking every possible shot at him for being slow/selfish/other stupid finelegesque arguments. Sachin top scores with an excellent innings, and again people whine, because he's too aggressive/careless/etc. (Of course, if SRT had been cautious and watchful, I'm sure we'd have had threads from people moaning that he should try and play his natural game and not play so much percentage cricket.) Jeebus.

Not again.... the Tendulkar vs Dravid fans.. Sachin batted well and couldn't go on long unfortunately. Similarly Rahul was out there long but could not convert. The same can be said about the rest of the batters at the top. India has a decent enough score on board and the test match is on. Why don't you folks enjoy that rather than getting into who played better cricket Tendulkar or Dravid?
