Surgeon refuses to treat Akhtar

KARACHI: A renowned Pakistani knee specialist has refused to treat Shoaib Akhtar in a bid to keep his 'reputation intact', a leading Pakistani newspaper Jang reported on Monday. The newspaper quoted a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official on the condition of anonymity claiming the doctor told Shoaib that, "I'm regarded among the best surgeons in the country and cannot put my reputation at stake by treating you because your international career is filled with controversies". Shoaib, 33, was asked to undergo a knee surgery by PCB's medical experts. The fast bowler has floating debris in his knee and needs an operation to recover from the injury. However, Shoaib said earlier this month that he has recovered from the injury without undergoing any operation as doctors have taken out the floating bones from his injured knee with the help of injections. The fast bowler also expressed his wish to play for Pakistan in the One-day series against Australia in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from April 22-May 7. However, the national team management is not convinced and wants Shoaib to undergo extensive fitness tests before taking a final decision on his inclusion in the 15-man squad for the series that will include five One-Day Internationals and a Twenty20 game.
So even the doctors dont want to be associated with Akhtar.

Its inconceivable for a Doctor to actually refuse to perform surgery to keep his reputation intact. If anything, his reputation is harmed more by the refusal in the first place. Either this story is bogus or we know only one side of the coin.

To add to what I've said earlier: Forget for a second about Aktor and concentrate on the Doctor He is right and he is wrong. He is right in the sense that he doesn't want to be associated with Aktor. He is wrong in the sense that he, as a doctor, has a duty to treat their patients. You can't simply pick and choose who you want to treat. In any other circumstance, I would take the patients side but seeing that the patient is Aktor and the kind of news the buffon makes the news for, its in the doctors best interests not to be associated with him So, hmm.... :dontknow:

This doctor is worried about his reputation because Shoaib is wont to "breakdown" when things are not going well...so he might decide to "breakdown" in the knee that was operated on and thus everyone in Pakistan and the world will say the doctor has done a bad job...and thus less people will respect him as the bestest of bestest surgeon, so his rival will get more patients...so he will make less millions. This just shows you that the doctor is a businessman, not a doctor...he has forgotten his hippocratic oath. He is a clown...paid to do tricks and perform magic. There are a lot of "doctors" like these nowadays...

This might sound odd from the point of view of a doctor's duty and all, but in this case I don't blame the surgeon. I would not touch Akhtar with a six foot pole. The next time he is getting hammered on the cricket field he'll hold his knee and hobble off the field and hold half a dozen press conferences about how the surgeon did not treat him right and how he should have gone to Aaasstraaailaa Maaaitee or the next time his pi$$ is found to have something illegal it's going to be the surgeon instead of the hakim.
