When will we have an express fast bowler?

You can divide Steyn's matches into 3 parts. 1. Matches in which he is slow. Averaging around 82-83 with peak speed over 140. He bowls at these speeds in swinging conditions. Srinath and Steyn are comparable here. 2. Matches when he bowls over 85mph and hits fastest as 90mph. This is what he bowls generally these days. Srinath is comparable here also. 3. Matches when he hits 90-95 range on consistent basis. Srinath is not comparable here and that's why Steyn is fast and not fast medium.
Point well made , but that is the reason I added Gillespie , call it premonition or DE JA VU,I think we both have our points but what I am trying to get across is the perception, where the lethalness is also a factor in a bowler being easily classified as fast whereas he might be called fast medium , if the same bowler was average, or played most of his career on flat tracks.

If they looked lethal were easily classified as fast. But in the days of speed guns, people look at top speeds and ability to bowl around 90mph consistently.

Have you seen highlights of domestic cricket? Yadav is shown as right arm medium. :cantstop: When Malinga started his career he was labeled as fast medium and now he is fast. I have seen such changes with other bowlers also. Steven Finn is still labeled as fast-medium. If he maintains his speed then I'm sure that it will change to fast within a year or less. Same might happen to Yadav. There is only 1 bowler from India who has been labeled fast from start without playing any match. Check it http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/player/399763.html

Seriously, ATUL SHARMA LOL, maybe one day Lalit Modi will tweet about him , why he was selected for Royals and send to Australia or England for training.

Fastest Nehra bowled in 2003 WC was 149 Kmph and since then I haven't seen any Indian pacer touching that speed. Since then almost every team had someone clocking 150. Jerome Taylor for WI, Harmison for Eng, Steyn for SA, Akhtar for Pakistan, Bond for NZ, Lee for Aus. Best speed days for Indian pacers were : 1) WC : when all three bowled at average speed of 140+ 2)Munaf's debut 140+ 3) Ishant in Aus : avg 140+. Sree occasionally around 140. But none of these bowlers maintained their pace. Ishant is only bowler who is still capable of bowling 85 mph+ consistently in tests. Even McGrath whose name is taken here as medium pacer, used to bowl around 85 mph in ODIs.
Ishant, Yadav, and Aaron have touched this speed, have bowled even faster than 149.

only fast medium is ishant rest could not sustain these speed for a substantial amount of time
Fast-medium bowlers are those who can bowl spells between 135k to 140k and have a reasonably good bouncer. All these bowlers, Sreesanth, RP, Munaf, Agarkar, Zaheer, Nehra, Dinda, VRV, Balaji etc can do that and have done so regularly. Ishant can bowl a lot of spells between 140k and 146 k and has bowled at a peak pace of 152.5 k and has a hostile bouncer and many lethal lifting good-lenth deliveries as well. That makes him fast. You were calling Cheema fast yesterday. I wonder how Ishant becomes fast-medium ? If he were a Pakistani u would have called him express because he hit 150k +, 3 or 4 times in his career and because of his hostile bounce.

:hmmm: After that series Kapil Dev was giving lectures about fast bowling on news channels. Nehra : 149 Srinath : 153 Yadav : 147 Zaheer : 145 Munaf : 144 Sree : ?
Top speeds of Indian pacers in international matches Srinath : 156 k ( according to newspaper reports during the 1996 SAF series ) Srinath : 150 k ( WC 1999 ) Agarkar : 146 k Nehra : 149.9 k ( WC 2003 ) Zaheer : 147 k ( WC 2003 ) Munaf : 145 k ( WI tour ) VRV : 145 k Ishant : 152 k ( Aus tour 2007 ) Sreesanth : 148 k ( domestic ODI series against NZ in 2008 or 2009 ) RP : 147 k or 148 k ( domestic ODI series against NZ in 2008 or 2009 ) Dinda : 145 k most probably Yadav : 147 k [/

Problem is the name you wrote above were not quick consistently apart from Srinath and now Yadav. They could hit high speeds here and there in one series or two whenever in rhythm or in helpful conditions, but to be called a fast bowler you need bowler who can bowl consistently quick over a period of time. Hitting maximum speed at once or twice and then mostly bowling at 135 is not called quick. They were all at the most fast medium, not fast. Yadav looks to have the ability to be called a fast bowler if he continues his pace up on average consistently over a period of time. Before it was only Srinath who maintained his pace for a long period of time. Ishant too has a long way to go in this regard. He is at best fast medium right now.

How do we know that he is not comparable here ? The speed gun was regularly used after Srinath had played 8 years of international cricket, had a major rotator cuff injury and was 30 yrs old. Other bowlers like Donald, Waqar and Wasim, who are called fast and were Srinath's contemporaries, did not bowl faster than him after the speed gun introduction .. infact old Srinath was a bit quicker than old Donald, Waqar and Wasim according to speed guns.

I have not called them fast, infact, if you read the post before the one u quoted, I have actually classified most of these bowlers as fast-medium apart from Ishant, Yadav and Srinath who were/ are fast. Peak paces are not that important unless hit on a consistent basis. I was just pointing out the actual top speeds that I know of and correcting the speeds quoted in that post.

i should have said fast medium

Would this encourage the selectors to give a go to Abu Nechim as well? Another guy easily capable of hitting 90 mph consistently. Worth a punt during the WI ODIs later in the year.

I say they must pick him for WI series. The had a chance to pick Nechim after Yadav got injured instead of Mithun.

Unlikely given that he wasn't even in the Challenger trophy squads. Of course you never know with our selectors.

Now Aaron arrives. Bowling 88 to 90 mph. Serious pace like yadav. Both need to be permanent members of at least odi team for next 12 months. We may have 2 fast bowlers now. The wait may be over?
Ishant bowls 85-90mph consistently even in tests.
