TaNk
When the selectors sit down on Sunday to name the Indian squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series and the Champions Trophy in South Africa, their main worry will again be the fitness of opener Virender Sehwag, whose injury during the World T20 championships in England in June had created a controversy. Sehwag is set to undergo an assessment of his shoulder on August 15, a day before the selectors meet, and the report will be taken into account while picking the Champions Trophy squad. As things stand, it is almost certain that Sehwag will not be part of the tri-series in Lanka, and sources said that the selectors might not risk him at all for the Champions Trophy because of the tough replacement rules in the ICC-organised events. Another reason they may not want to risk Sehwag is the fact that the team have alternatives for the opening slot in Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik, who did well in the West Indies. Also, it will be difficult for the selectors to determine Sehwag's match-fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy as there is no competitive cricket in between. The 30-year-old is expected to start practising in the first week of September. The Champions Trophy runs from September 22 to October 5. Sources also indicated that the selectors were likely to spring a few surprises in the 15-member squad named for the two tournaments, most notably welcoming back Rahul Dravid into the One-day fold after almost two years, and leaving out Mumbai batsman Rohit Sharma. There could be a change in the spin department as well with leggie Amit Mishra likely to get a recall ahead of left-arm spinner Pragyan Ohja. Other than that, the squad is set to include Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh among the batsmen. Suresh Raina, who missed out the West Indies series due to a finger injury, is also likely to stay in the mix despite a poor World T20 run. Dinesh Karthik may travel as the back-up wicketkeeper-batsman behind skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. In Zaheer Khan's absence, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Praveen Kumar and RP Singh are the front-runners for the seamers' slots, and Harbhajan Singh is a certainty as the team's main spin option. Yusuf Pathan's place in the team is all but assured, and it has been learnt that the selectors are keen to award Abhishek Nayar with a place by virtue of being the lone seaming all-rounder in the list of 30 probables announced. Nayar made his debut during the West indies tour but didn't get a chance to bat or bowl. He, however, had some crucial knocks down the order in the Emerging Players tournament in Australia last month. Link to comment

Guest Hiten.
Rohit Sharma should be excluded from the squad after being given indefinite run and yet failing to capitalizing it. RD would be a welcome and terrific additions to the side. With return of SRT in the side, India's batting woes would be answered to some extend but we will definitely need a better performance from our bowlers. PK should be given extended run, now that ZAK is out. SA conditions will suit PK's bowling style. SRT Veeru (if fit) / GG Rahul Yuvi Raina MSD Yusuf Bhajji Ojha Ishant PK If viru is fit, Ojha would the unlucky one to get the axe. Link to comment

jf1gp_1
Even if sehwag is out with Sachin in the team i dont see any reason why dravid should be recalled. Ojha has done alright in whenever he has played why bring mishra. CT is in SA not subcontinent where is irfan he did alright in t20 cup when we were last there. Surprise will be Kohlis selection This is what i want to see Batsman : Sachin, Gambhir, Raina, Yuvraj, Kohli, Yusuf Keeper : Dhoni, Kartik Bowlers : Ishant, Praveen, Nehra, Irfan, Bhaji, Ojha If Sehwag is unfit take Rohit/Nayar (dont really care) Link to comment

The Outsider
How comes Amit Mishra is likely to be picked ahead of Ojha? Mishra did very well in the emerging players tournament. But it's unlikely to happen. Ojha hasn't done much wrong and will likely keep his spot. Though I would select an extra batsman/pacer instead as I don't see us playing 2 spinners in South Africa. TaNk
Sehwag to 'wait and watch' on his fitness Indian batsman Virender Sehwag was non-committal about his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy in September, despite making good progress in his recovery from a shoulder injury. He was operated on June 11, and was expected to be ruled out for 12 to 16 weeks. "My shoulder is better than before. It takes time to recover from any surgery," Sehwag said in New Delhi. "But if it takes time, I can't help it. I can just wait and watch." Sehwag picked up the injury during the semi-final of the IPL in South Africa and subsequently missed the World Twenty20 in June. He was at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore as part of his rehabilitation last month. He said last week that he was hopeful of playing the Champions Trophy, but had yet to start his cricket skills training. He has already been ruled out of India's short tri-series in Sri Lanka next month. His captain MS Dhoni was also keeping a close watch on his fitness. "He might be available for the Champions Trophy," he said. "From now to the tri-series, the time is too short. Sehwag is improving every day. He is working hard to get fit for the Champions Trophy." The Champions Trophy runs between September 22 and October 5. India then play a seven-match ODI series at home against Australia. Link to comment

siddhu
Hope Sehwag is fit. But I think, Dravid might have struck a deal with the selectors that he will retire in ODIs if given an opportunity in CT. But this is just conjecture at this point. Link to comment
