Vengsarkars problem is that he was bit of an FTB, I think Im right in saying the only tons he scored overseas are the three he scored at Lords. I think thats 14 of his 17 centuries in India. I dont think VVS is 5th best indian batsmen ever.even Vengarkar would have stronger case

Vengy and laxman have lot in common both them underachieved in my book, both of them were middle order batsmen who to get in team started as openers and failed.That really knocked their averages under fifty.Both them played under shadows of greater batsmen of their times vengy under Sunny and Vishy.Laxman under Sachin and Dravid. Both were stroke makers who were bit lose in their stroke play early in their careers,Vengy had higher peak than laxman but that lasted for 18 months after that he was never the same. Laxman in last 67 test matches averages almost 50 with 11 hundreds that too batting at no 6 most of the time has been more consistent and is more a match winner than Vengy. Laxman off late has become model of consistency doesn't have many hundreds to show for as he had to bat with tail lot of times,Dravid always has said I wish i had Laxman shot making ability. He is perfect No 5 Batsmen for India as he blends his experience with youth following him in order.Even if Dravid retires he should stay at no5 .

Lot of times he looks so stupid, gets out stupidly, sometimes looking completely out of sorts, sometimes you would think this guy is new to cricket. He comes to the crease -- lazily wafting his willow as if this is nets ! As I have said before -- in the long run he has not lived up to his potential!

I would have Laxman, Azhar, Mohinder and Sanjay Manjrekar ahead of Vengsarkar any day. I would even drop Sidhu to MO and have him ahead of Vengsarkar. Vengsarkar's only fame was how he went about mauling the English Bowlers. Nothing besides that.
