Luck & Pluck A bit of fortune coupled with Rahane and Jaffer’s composed knocks take Mumbai close to TN total By Ehtesham Hasan Posted On Friday, December 11, 2009 at 02:17:28 AM After a side gets 501 on the board in the first innings, you would expect the team batting second to be under some sort of pressure as they look to overhaul the sizeable total. Contrary to the normal perception Mumbai batted stoically to end the day three of their Group ‘A’ Ranji Trophy clash against Tamil Nadu at 308 for 3. The hosts are still 194 runs adrift from gaining the first innings lead and the good news is that their captain Wasim Jaffer is unbeaten on 129. Ajinkya Rahane, however, was unfortunate to miss out on a hundred. Batting at No 3, the youngster was dismissed on 98, after an important 193-run partnership with his skipper which has kind of given Mumbai a slight advantage leading into the final day’s play today. Typical Jaffer Knock Jaffer’s innings was typical of what we’ve been witnessing year after year — the languid flow of the bat followed by a gentle jog to the other end. He appeared to be in absolute control as he struck 15 fours, his staple diet, and a couple of sixes off left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas. Rahane however rode his luck on the day. Twice in his 183-ball stay he was given a let-off. His first life came when he was on 12, the keeper fumbling a stumping chance off Srinivas. Rahane likes to get on with his game and the crafty 16-year-old lured him out of the crease by cleverly varying his length but Umashankar Sushil made a meal of it. Srinivas, who looks every bit an interesting prospect, suffered again. This time a leading edge was spilled by Murali Vijay in the first slip couple of overs after lunch. Rahane was at 22 then. He quickly wrote a thank you note to the visitors and made most of the opportunity by tightening his game. As his hundred neared, Srinivas tossed one up. Rahane lunged forward only to get a faint edge. He stood there for a while in a state of disbelief before galumphing back to the dressing room. Help for Spinners A disappointed Rahane later said that batting was becoming difficult on a track which has now started to spin. “The left-arm spinner (Srinivas) is getting good turn but it is turning slowly. Scoring may not be easy tomorrow,” said Rahane. Brief Scores: TN 501; Mumbai 308/3 (Jaffer 129*, Rahane 98, Mahesh 1/37)
