kabira
he has played only 46 tests outside Lanka avg. 44 Home avg is 65. Difference of 21, thats quite a lot about 32% Link to comment
vvvslaxman
When the ball doesn't make any deviation he is great. Once it starts to move around he would start playing with his edge of the bat. On a dead flat tracks he is definitely great because he can pile up runs like Lara singlemindedly. Link to comment
kabira
^so can he be modern day great?? Link to comment
King Tendulkar
Yes he is great. No doubts. People have to grow up and accept it Link to comment
Sachinism
44 average outside home isn't bad at all. But as you've highlighted, he only has a decent average against England on good pitches with assistance for bowlers. Fail in Aus, NZ & SA Link to comment
Laaloo
Those averages are a little too low in the current generation TBH Link to comment
Sooda
He's a great in the way that Mohammed Yousuf is a great. Link to comment

King Tendulkar
Mo Yos greatness could well be defined by how he does in upcoming aus tour, although admittedly it is against a weaker aus attack then in the past. The fact he has a weak record in oz,sa and sl counts against him. He could be labelled a FTB Link to comment
Sachinism
Ponting also has a mediocre average in England and a appaling record in India. Is he amongst the greats?:punter: He's a very very good player, not great :P Link to comment

Ram
You don’t score 9000+ test runs by merely being just ‘very good’. That is quite an elite club that he is now a part of. Whether Jayawardene is a great player already, is certainly up for discussion. But one thing’s for sure, he’s certainly knocking on the doors of greatness with brute force. If we’re really intent on it, we can puncture many statistical holes on the career balloon of most batsmen, applying filters that never existed before. Not surprisingly, it takes quite a while for a batsmen to graduate from the ‘Good’ club to the ‘Great’ club. That tag does not come that easily. Guys like Ponting, Dravid had to deliver for 4 even 5 seasons in a row to rise up into the rarified club. Seeing that, If J’dene wants to join them in that elite space, he probably has to keep up this level of performance for probably one season more (AND) put in some worthwhile performances in countries where his record seems most weak. If that happens, its probably inevitable, given the sheer mountain of runs he has been scoring, that he will considered ‘great’. Link to comment
