THX_1138
While we sing songs in awe and applaud Dhoni, keep in mind that he has the by far the strongest cricket team india has ever produced playing in a period where the game is skewed heavily in favor of our strengths: contemporary cricket, from ODIs to T20s and even Tests, is no longer an even contest and the game is designed for batsmen at the moment. yet with the strongest batting lineup ever sported by India (possibly the strongest batting lineup outside of the glorious West Indies and on occasion, the Aussies), our team manages only 50 odd percent victories in all ODIs or T20s we play. Furthermore, contrast this with the period when Australia are facing an obscure future, and yet their win percentages outstrip ours. Instead of applauding Dhoni, one must ask, and not just of Dhoni, but the whole team: why do you choose to be human when you could be gods? Link to comment

vvvslaxman
Dhoni has captained 9 won 6. India should have won basin reserve Test. combination of conservatism and bad weather spoilt it. In the one test where Sehwag captained in NZ he was really off color as captain. In the end Gambhir had to save us. Overall India is doing a good job. Our bowling is not really potent. Let us accept that first. You need 20 wickets to win Test regardless of whether the era is batsmen oriented or bowler oriented. INdia doesn't do that on a consistent basis. Link to comment

Bumper
Dont know about the Aussies. Speaking for India, why have we succeeded recently ? Is this our strongest team ever ? Perhaps, the most balanced side we have ever had. But that does not explain why our team has collectively punched above its weight oflate. Our batting lineup has been pretty much the same in the last 6-7 years (since Sehwag started opening). Yet this batting lineup which we are used to seeing capitulate in the last innings (Karachi, Bangalore, Mumbai etc come to mind immediately), has suddenly begun to pull off the unthinkable. In Chennai last year, we pulled off a record chase against England. In NZ we batted for over two days to draw a test. In Motera this year, we managed to bat for a day and a half to draw the game. These are superlative performances for the standards we are used to. Is this attributable to Dhoni's leadership ? Or our fast bowlers ? I dont know. But I think they all play a part in it. After watching cricket for a while, I have come to realize that players tend to punch above their weights when they know that they are part of a superior team. The fear of failure deserts them. They think that they are winners. They know that their peers will save this team even if they fail. The result is that you tend to play a lot more positively even when the chips are down. The Aussies were a classic example of this theory. I remember Gilly & Haydos saying that their goal was to score 100 runs in the first 15 overs every time they walked out to bat. They were not worried about losing their wickets, because they knew that the rest of the batting was strong enough to put up a competitive score even if the openers were dismissed cheaply. This positive attitude from talented players is almost a self-fulfilling prophecy. You get better results executing your skills this way & the better results in turn reinforce such a mindset. I think Indian players have begun to think that they are world beaters. This is an important first step in building any successful team. The captain and the selectors play an important part in this as well. Hopefully the results will follow. Link to comment
