The announcement was made at5 12.15 p.m outside the private AMRI Hospital where Basu had been undergoing treatment since January 1. Basu failed to respond to doctors’ treatment. His condition had turned extremely critical on Saturday night. Only yesterday, Prime minister Manmohan Singh had saluted Jyoti Basu as a 'great son of India' . and wished him quick recovery. The PM had visited the veteran CPI(M) leader in hospital on January 7. The medical board constituted at the private AMRI Hospital, had been consulting specialists of AIIMS, New Delhi. Basu’s five organs -- heart, lung, kidney, liver and brain – were malfunctioning, and the doctors lost all hope of his recovery. Basu was on full ventilation and full life support. Basu’s next of kin, including son Chandan Basu, his wife and son besides his sister-in-law and her husband, were among many party leaders who were at the hospital when the tragic news was announced by the Chairman of the Left Front coordination committee, Biman Basu. Jyoti Basu, born July 8, 1914, served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him India's longest-serving Chief Minister. He was a member of the CPI(M) Politburo from the time of the party's founding in 1964 until 2008

straighttalk Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 JB might not have been a favorite among the urban classed but he did quite a lot for the poorer sections of the society. He took part in the freedom struggle and for a change has never been charged with corruption (i think there was only one small land scam case where his son might have benifited). We might not agree with his ideology but he was defintiely not good riddance. Plus he was highly educated which marks him out.

A dead leader or two wont make much difference .. someone else will always be there for the throne. The fact that he was CM for 20+ yrs indicates that people were happy with his work .. so the problem is we the people, not just a few netas.

You could have avoided this comment at least today, the day in which he died..:P If someone is a CM for 23 years in a row, there must be many things special about him. My condolences to the family of Jyoti Basu.

The Outsider Posted January 17, 2010 Posted January 17, 2010 The guy was a scum - developed an entire gundagardi infrastructure in West Bengal for the communists through which they used to rig elections and responsible for the death of countless people. Championed the idea of not taking part in central governments but to blackmail them into doing his party's wish for their support. Maybe I should have just stayed away from the thread and let his fan following mourn the death of such a great leader. I am sure the day Laloo dies he'll also find many supporters who will champion the sacrifices he made for the people. PS : I am not wishing for anyone's death, but am certainly not the one to shed tears when someone like Jyoti Basu dies. I'll exit the thread and let the mourners get on with RIP for a leader they respected.

It's easy to buy votes in India with few color tvs and few bags of rice. It took 95 years, several tax payer's money for that sob Juto Basu to die Kolkata used to be known as Paris of the east at one time and look what years of communist rule under him has done to the city of joy... even floodlights refuse to work. his son Chandan basu is a bonafide thug...Juto basu's political cloud has shielded him all these years from his long list of crime inc extortion, murder, rape...you name it

Yeah but bengalis arent' exactly known for their go-getter attitude (like gujjus) required for business, are they ? They are more likely to be professors/artists than bother with murky business matters.
