Why so much love for Uthappa? In a team, there are openers, stabiliers, and finishers . And Uthappa belong to finishers which we have plenty( YP, UV,Dhoni and even Kartick) so not much use for him
The question is are these guys in as good form as Uthappa is :winky: .... Uthappa can bat in the top order as well as the lower order so he is pretty useful. And he can act as a make shift WK too, if required in a game

IMO, RU has just played 1-2 innings in this IPL which every player in Indian squad has done. It is not like the other players are in no form, the other players are just as good form as RU. Remember in T20, Form and momentum should really be out of dictionary. You have to perform on that day which is all about consistency in which RU has not done since 2007, some good matches and some poor matches is how he has played since. And flexibility is a non- issue in T20. With such a small overs available, there is bound to be changes in batting order and players will have no problem in adjusting. However, openers is really important, as if they are out early, the pressure is only doubled for the latter batsman. And what if RU play very bad 2day, so can I say he is in poor form.

It's hilarious that you want me to define form. Looks like you have developed some theories by listening to commentators. 'Form' can never be out of dictionary because in order to play well, you should be 'well oiled'. How good a team is depends up on how 'well oiled' its players are. Which is why we have favorites, dark horses and underdogs. Again, you are missing the point. It's about 'how skillful a player is to be effective in being flexible' compared with others. Theotrically, YP is flexible enough to be played either in the top order or the lower order. But then the question is how skilled, he is to take on good pace bowling at the top of the order compared to someone like Uthappa. And who is saying food openers aren't important? Which is someone like Uthappa, who is in good form is useful as he can double up as an 'effective opener' or a lower order bat.

RU is suggested by many because he has been the biggest game changer in this IPL edition. Teams genuinely fear that Uthappa can win the match from any positions. Also he is good against both pace and spin. In T20 you don't need to score 100s. You just need to 15 ball 30 odd runs. This guy is capable of doing that consistently.

You still have not answered my question, is IPL the only tournament which should be used to judge players? I do not think so, which is why I feel Vijay is better the RU as he has scored a lot of good runs in one days. It is not a question of RU is a bad player. He is a good player so do not take this post as something against RU. But I am just saying one or two good performances only in IPL should not tell you how well oiled your players are.

But I am just saying one or two good performances only in IPL should not tell you how well oiled your players are.[/quote'] The point is that IPL is India's domestic T20 tourney so if we are picking a team, it makes sense to look at the performances in it (and it has almost everyone playing in it so it gives a good chance to analyze how well oiled the players are). Also it is seen as a platform for those who don't get opportunities to play for Ind to show their capabilities Now to answer your question directly, since the WC is being played only a few days after the IPL (along with factors discussed above), it makes sense to look at performances in the IPL. It's not even uncommon to find overseas players being considered for their national sides after their good performances in IPL. Career of people like Jayasuriya got back on track after the performances in IPL. If I recall correctly, Shaun Marsh, Nannes came in to national consideration too (or made their case stronger for a national berth) after their performances in IPL This is not about theories but seeing how things are. If you can see (with your own eyes), how good a player is playing in the IPL then it makes sense to consider him over someone who is struggling. So selecting a player based on IPL has also got to do with actually seeing a player do well, how he goes about his game, his confidence level and so on. It is also not a question of one or two good innings but how a player goes about his game from most angles :winky:

What is Piyush Chawla doing there then? :wall:

Ask selectors, how they have selected the team duh One of the reasons, why we struggled in last WC was we picked the team based on reputation, with many of those selected struggling (comparatively) in the last IPL

dood, the one day's against Aus and SAF. Remember the 2 centuries and a 50. Unfortunately, was given out on a duck wrongly :((, otherwise would've scored another century :whack:

would have preferred Uthappa, not because Vijay is bad,hes good, but with the soldity of GG we needed someone who can take chances from ball one
