so killing is not-Humane, but sterilization is !!!!!! Where (and how) do you draw the line - (of humane-ity) - cutting one leg, removing one/both balls, neutering/exterminating their pups,.......... P.S. no need to cover up your choice of action by morality/being-human.. its as simple as (being selfish) to protect your species - by whatever means.
Of course sterilization is more humane than killing the dogs. It can be done painlessly (or with less pain) and the dog released back to the streets. Within 2-3 years there will be a dramatic fall in the population of dogs without actually killing or gassing even a single dog.

Why do Indians give their dogs 'white' names? (Tommy' date=' Jimmy vagera..). :hmmm:[/quote'] Mandira Bedi named her dogs after Sardars and there was a hue and cry that she insulted Sardars. Aamir named his dog Shahrukh and people thought he did this to insult SRK. People consider dogs as inferior creatures and hence dont name them after Indian names which are mostly names of gods.

All the dogs that lurk around public streets should be caught and deported to jungles where they can survive just like other animals do , instead of having 10 horrible dogs in every public street . Many municipal workers have stated that its very difficult to catch all the dogs so it will be appropriate to shoot down the rest of them . Life of a human is more important than that of a dog . Is any dog lover going to take responsibility if even a single child gets infected with rabies in the future ? Maybe we should also show more compassion towards all living beings including mosquitoes and call for a ban on all the sprays , plug-ins used for killing them . Who knows there might be atleast 10 good mosquitoes for every lot of 100 that do not harass Humans like the bad ones do but we end up killing even the innocent ones .

Are people so naive ,Dogs just do not go around bitting kids and people on streets. Its the humans who mostly make the first strike. We have a group of stray dogs near our colony .we give them food and they guard the house allthough we have a german shepherd who is good enough for that , Yes if you get some mad dogs then they can be dealt with but killing dogs is no no and do not fear dogs.

What would you do if your kitchen is infested with cockroaches? Do you try to kill them or ignore them as they are just bothering you? Just trying to get an idea of how much compassionate you are as a human.

If your fav cocroaches/mosquitoes are capable of the following, we'll grant them thought as well. Until then, how about exhibiting a capability called reasoning when comparing dogs & pests. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7577275.stm http://abcnews.go.com/US/slain-navy-seals-devoted-dog-remains-side-funeral/story?id=14378885#.T_B3cv2f1SE

Even the bravest of the brave and defenders of your freedom (e.g. Navy Seals) admire the abilities of these creatures and develop special lifelong bonds with them. Shouldn't that itself give special treatment to the species in question ?

So compassion is based on the abilities of an animal. So its fine to kill animals as long as they are useless?

That's a part of the story. You disagree ?

Make your own choice as everyone else does, but give some credit to certain species over others and not club all of them together. They are all NOT the same even if some of them cause harm to us. I haven't even said that euthanizing some of them should be ruled out. My hope is an equitable solution can be reached.

Stray dogs are part of our culture. Who we need to be like the west? We have so many stray people, stray dogs, stray cats, .... Welcome to India!

^ Clarke, No one is asking for the extermination of the entire species or for dogs who are useful. People are asking for neutering or extermination of specific stray and street dogs who can make life dangerous for people, specially kids.

Wait, WTF? :hysterical: If stray dogs are part of our 'culture', so is tuberculosis, diphtheria, dengue fever etc. Why do we have to be like the 'West' and enforce those pesky sanitation standards, right? :headshake: You just gave a whole new definition to the term 'culture'.

Why do Indians give their dogs 'white' names? (Tommy' date=' Jimmy vagera..). :hmmm:[/quote'] Hmm got my first dog around the time the Indica was launched in India- my dog was a Boxer-Daschund small and cute just like the Indica, so we called the dog Dica. Second Dog was a gift. An injured Dalmation. It used to walk with a limp. Anywayz we took her in. Dog needed a lot of training. It had absolutely no sense of cleanliness. The previous owners treated her like crap apparently. The dog would puke and then lick it's own puke. So we named it after Pervez Musharraf we called it Mushy. Third and current dog is a Alsatian. Dog's powerful and built like a champ, and so we called her Champ. No 'white' names here.

Yep, my mistake, after all, animals do not recommend genocide just because a couple of human bother them, so my apologies to animals. Seriously though, where does it stop once you start killing anything which bothers you rather than taking the right steps? First human beings completely destroy habitats of animals, then they want to kill animal who have no were else to go and survive BTW feeling compassion and pity is also what makes us human, otherwise what makes us different from animals?
Well said but I wanna dispute your last para. I think compassion is noticeable in animals too. I have seen enough incidents of predators bringing up the babies of their prey - breast feeding them and even male leopards protecting baby Imphalas - and vice versa to know that love and compassion exists in animal society as well. In fact I'd argue that animals especially mammals are more harmonious and compassionate than humans. The law of the jungle is kill only when you need food unlike the law of us humans where killing is a game. I mean who the eff are we to kill dogs just like that? If a dog attacks you then yes kill it to defend yourself but preemptive genocide is definitely not done Having said that I don't quite disagree with the idea that if there are too many strays then transport them to a place where they are a delicacy...nothing wrong with it...in fact it is very practical.

What is the use of all these street dogs that only create inconvenience for strangers after the sun set ? If some of the people love these dogs so much then they must take them away to their own homes . It also seems that while its okay to kill goats / cows / pigs for food even when other veg options are available but killing the dogs even for own protection is a gross sin . People should also give up non-veg food if they are so considerate about animal rights . If we can slaughter lakhs of other animals for our taste then what is the problem in killing all these stray dogs ? We do not have rights to kill any animal for that matter but we still do yet in case of dogs so many people try to act sentimental as if there is some 1000 years old Indian tradition of not killing animals that still continues to this date .
