Selectors have seemed to abandon logic in looking to groom Raina and Rohit Sharma for Test cricket. The fact is that they have done well in First Class cricket when given the chance, but they have not played enough Ranji Trophy or A team cricket to show consistency in different conditions against all bowlers. Pujara has shown unmatched consistency, excelling at the undoubtedbly higher level of cricket in England against West Indies A. He should be the key player who is looked at to replace Yuvraj. The selectors believe that because Raina and Rohit have shown proficiency at ODI level against good bowlers prove that they can handle the step up from FC cricket to Test cricket. However, when Pujara shows ability to play against international bowlers like Tonge, Baker, Bernard, Mahmood, Plunkett, etc - all doubts about whether he can step up, can be removed. Moreover, I disagree with any notice being taken of ODI cricket when regarding Test selection because it is a completely different game - different ball, different fields, different pitches, different restrictions - all totally different.

I imagine if Yuvraj is to be dropped it would be for Kohli. But he wont be for a little while yet, came good in the first innings, he should be stuck with for a while. In any case it would be unfair to stick Pujara at 6, hard place to bat in the lineup. Not least for a newbie.

Indeed. I neglected to say that Yuvraj should not be dropped any time soon. He should get a prolonged run in the team and has hit valuable runs before - just needs to add consistency. Would be helpful to his cause if he could provide a few overs, like Marcus North has.

I heard someone comment that, if Pujara is allowed in tests now, and if he fails, he will loose confidence. I say BS, what about this, he is being denied a chance, when he is playing at his best (not place, at least a chance), if you delay too much, he might loose confidence, and go back to shell. Another huge mistake in not picking Pujara is - Yuvraj has gotten enough chance to play alongside Laxman,Dravid,Sachin - still hasnt learnt much ( I think). If Pujara joins after these three leave, he may not get that privilege to share dressing room with them. Point being, if he is a future potential replacement of, lets say, Dravid, then let him share few matches with them.

Yuvraj had got a continuous run of 13 test matches between our 2005 tour to Zimbabwe to the 2006 tour to West Indies. Even a player of Laxman's class was dropped to open up a spot for him. And later on Dravid was forced to open to allow Yuvraj to play in Australia. And Ganguly's retirement is two years old now. He is doing okay for now, but one has to question is he the best test match option we have.

Having said that, we cant be sure that any youngster replacing him will do well. The only annoying thing is that he does the same mistakes again and again- Bowlers could literally plan his wicket and get instant results. Hope he works on his game- having people like Sachin and Dravid in the team, i dont think it will be impossible.

And for what? How many match-winning performances have we had? He is simply not a test grade player. Never has and never while be - just look at the career stats. Seriously it's time to realise this is just is not working out and move on and give others a chance. I don't see anything wrong with the likes of Raina/Pujara/Rohit not being in the test side for now. I would rather these guys continue to get vital experience on A tours, first class cricket and domestic cricket because they're still young enough to mature and refine their technique especially Raina who's more used to limited overs batting. Pujara, I agree has shown the temperament and technique required and so has Rohit to a certain extent. There's no doubt in my mind that with Dravid/SRT/Laxman all in the late 30's the time for these young guys is going to come very soon. Unless Yuvraj really flops in the next 4/5 tests then he should get an extended run to prove his worth.
