zen Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 my bad,I didnt read ur post properly, but in a period of 1 yr before he was dropped,Irfan played just 1 game in India. I am sorry, but u r making way too much off IPL.Ashwin is good wen teams looking to take him apart, not wen they r content to see him off,we saw how he struggled in Zimbabwe.if u are suggesting hes better than Bhajji, thats just wrong n giving 10 overs regularly to part timers is extremely dangerous.they should n would come in if one of the bowlers get it,but to expect them to bowl 10 overs regularly is unfair.thier job is to bat n it should remain so To know how good Ashwin is, he has to be given chances, which is what I am for. Theoretically, I have agreed with you by saying that we need 3 seamers and 2 spinners, with one of them being an all-rounder. Practically, I have proposed a different solution (for effectiveness), seeing how some of the bowlers potentially could not be good enough to bowl 5 overs a game much like the part-timers, which is why the batting has been strengthened. In T20s, I wouldn't mind playing a bad bowling all-rounder at #7 but in 50 overs game, if you are playing a bowler or a batsman, you want to make sure he is good enough to do the job (or at least 70%-80% of it). If Irfan can bat well and bowl 7-8 overs effectively then he should get his chance. Otherwise, it's not bad to look around for other combination. Unlike, what many feel, Yuvi to me is more of a #6-#7 batsman than a #4 (which is why I have proposed Kohli at 4). So in a way, you also have see Yuvi batting at 6 and bowling in a few overs vs IP batting at #7 and bowling in a few overs. And then you also have to consider PK/Ishant/3rd Seamer vs Ojha/Chawla/2nd spinner. Let just hope we are able to find the right balance!

Yuvi at 6/7?that'd be idiotic.hes our match winner n should get max overs to bat.Kohli may have the numbers at the moment, but he lacks the power to accelerate, which is why he is ignored for T20s.

Bhajji needs a rest anyways I edited my last post to add this: "Unlike, what many feel, Yuvi to me is more of a #6-#7 batsman than a #4 (which is why I have proposed Kohli at 4). In a way, #7 can get away by averaging around 30, which Irfan is capable of doing, but if a team has a strong bowling line up. In Ind's case, we have to bowl well as a unit so we also have to consider the usefulness of 'another' average bowler vs usefulness of the 7th batsman, who is good enough to get in to the side for his batting ability, along with the bowling capability of part-timers vs the all-rounder/bowler who can bat a bit.

The last I heard was that Yuvi is struggling for form and fitness and was ignored for Raina in tests too. IMO, it would be idiotic to have him at #4 thinking he is a mainstay. He is good enough to score quick 30-40s and thus #6-#7 suits him better! :winky:

Yuvi to me, as I said before, is more like a #6-#7 batsman. And #6-#7 have to be good enough to get 100s too
Ram Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 say whatever u want about irfan, but he is best india can do for this number 7 position. i dont mind playing 7 batsman, but by doing that india will give up a lot more runs by predictably bowling part timers like sehwag and yuvraj. you can bet teams will target them with success in every single game. you can keep wishing that Irfan become that dream no.7 that we all kept wishing for, but the blunt truth is - He simply does not have the goods to be a no.7 batsmen.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted August 16, 2010 Author Posted August 16, 2010 how did i imply that irfan is the 'dream number 7'. LOL. i just think he is the best india happens to have for the job.
Ram Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 how did i imply that irfan is the 'dream number 7'. LOL. i just think he is the best india happens to have for the job. No he isnt. How is someone, who has a SR of 75 batting at numbers 7 and 8, which is actually lesser than his career SR of 78, be even remotely suitable for that job? He has just 50 in those positions, as apposed to five 50s overall, which proves that whatever success he has had as an ODI bat, it was not as a lower order batsmen. Now, you and I can argue forever as to whats the actual responsibility of a no.7/8 batsmen. I think you say its enough if he could hang around while the specialist batsmen at the other end scores. I obviously disagree with that. I think a no.7 batsmen in today's world should be good enough into the team as a batsmen alone. Everything else's just a bonus.

Then ask them to have a wrestling fight. Who ever scores more points gets the no 7. position..
youngindia Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 uthappa by a long way.rayudu can be in the pciture as well. for the reason all teams will fear this man at the finish. he is an exceptional striker of the ball up there with yuvraj and can fashion miraculous wins from nowhere. he has also damaged the australian attack a few times when they were still potent, the best at mumbai where we chased 190 after being 6 down for less than 100. and also he made his debut around 2005 and has enough experience. jadeja-not ready for internationals and pitchforked early due to the ignorance of the team management.however he could be a matchwinner with the bat in the future.but dhoni and co are killing him with their ignorance. yusuf- not enuf weapons compared to uthappa. ifran- a bowler at no 7 is too less in batting depth. Especially while chasing 290+ totals, depth is very important. example, the chase of 325 was achieved by the last recognised pair kaif-yuvraj. symonds also has played many a vital innings at no 7 for australia.
King Tendulkar Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 jadeja on his day is very competent bowler. Bowls nice and flat , speared in. Very effective at times in keeping runs down

King Tendulkar Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 But what if its not his day' date=' thats the worry, too many off days among the good days[/quote'] I Pathan is an awful bowler and very over rated bat. Y Pathan is shocking bowler, would not even call him a bowler. At least Jadeja has some good days with the ball. He is not awesome but at least is accurate with a bit of bite
King Tendulkar Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Jadejas economy rate is 4.8. Which frankly speaking in modern odi cricket is bloody good
youngindia Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 matchwinning ability is first and foremost. pick the matchwinners and fill in the blanks. jadeja can only be a matchwinner with the bat and currently he does no have enough skills to do that.it will take a few years. uthappa as the no 7 can be a matchwinner. the fifth bowler whether its jadeja or someone else is not going to win you matches. considering the resources available at the moment, they have to go with 7 batsmen(6 specialists + dhoni).
