Karthik should only in the team as a replacement wicketkeeper to Dhoni else he shouldn't be included to do the 'makeshift' things. Even if Kohli failed, he will learn and do well. He has the potential. He is also a handy bowler and a good fielder...

No need of Karthik in Indian team............ But still selectors won't leave him until Sachin replace him. Kohli is better option as opener in fiinal. Saurabh may replace Karthik I think.

I think Karthik has no one to blame in this match. Last 2 matches umpiring errors. But he has to make it count in a big way. Not scoring 50s, 60s and throwing his wicket away. When is he going to score 100s. If you are an opener in ODI you should try to stay there. That is what Gambhir does. He never lets Sehwag's game affect him. KKD often gets carried away even when he is in good touch and throws it away.

Bring in Karthik as the reserve wicketkeeper. Any batsman indisposed for one-dayers? Bring in Karthik to plug the gap. In the first 21 innings of his one-day career, Karthik played in every position from opener to No. 7. For his state side, Tamil Nadu, he has long been a successful middle-order batsman. After four failures at the top in Dambulla, perhaps the time has come for Karthik to insist on being picked for his natural role, competing with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for a middle-order spot. If there is a need for an opening batsman, India should groom a specialist back-up, someone like M Vijay. Dhoni has spoken of the pressures on Rohit, since he is never sure of being in the side. The argument is more apt for Karthik: in the six years since his debut, Karthik has never been a part of the team for more than 12 matches at a stretch. His current six-game run as opener, after flying in as Sehwag's replacement during the Asia Cup, equals his longest spell at a fixed batting slot. The present, relatively long stint with the national squad is on the back of a Man-of-the-Match performance in the Asia Cup final. But playing him out of position at the top of the order is doing neither him nor the team any good. His confidence is taking a beating and the team isn't getting off to solid starts. Two poor umpiring decisions haven't helped Karthik either - he was given out lbw in the opening match against New Zealand and caught behind against Sri Lanka on Sunday. Both dismissals sparked dire batting collapses that left India facing a must-win encounter against New Zealand. When the big boys - Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir - return to the top order, Karthik may or may not retain his spot in the squad as a reserve wicketkeeper. But before discarding him again, Karthik deserves to be given a decent run in the middle order to see whether he has what it takes. His career numbers match those of other contenders like Rohit, who at least had the opportunity of a one-year unbroken run in the middle order before being dropped. Karthik's blend-in-any-role versatility has so far helped him remain on the international scene despite being usurped as the country's No. 1 wicketkeeper. Karthik's failures at the top of the order so far in this series are more a reflection on his general inconsistency and inability to adapt to the changing demands, than a verdict on the toughness of opening. Ask any batsmen and he'll tell you that opening is the BEST job in ODI cricket. The ball is new and hard, the field is up and by and large, you have batting friendly conditions. Hence it is no surprise that some of the most prolific ODI batsmen over the years have been openers (while its the reverse in Test matches.. Middle order batsmen rule the roost there..). Karthik is a professional, he has been playing for the Indian team long enough for us to even forget the number of times he has been dropped. Yet, he still does not look established and assured at the crease. At some point, it will be time to move on to other prospects.

A guy who has done well against the moving ball in SA and Eng as a test opener cannot become good for nothing overnight. Like all others, DK too has had a horrid time in this series. Should be no refelction of his capability. No one other than Sehwag has hit a 100, Taylor and Styris scored 90-odd only after they were given a life each by our fielders. Basically all batsmen have struggled in the conditions and those at the top of the order have had a torrid time. A series like this therefore should be seen in proper context before taking a call about someone's ability. As someone said, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him do well in the finals. And with us touring SA soon, I would rather have someone who has done well there than a complete rookie.

Well - Karthik is not a specialist opener. That is the point. If this guy is not a specialist opener then you can have another guy as an opener. Kohli can fit the bill there. He is being trusted to walk in at No.3. Opening is not a big step from there.
