I am surprised that you are still trying to put words in my mouth despite quoting my post and marking part of it in bold with big fonts : Now read it again and tell me where I said 'economy rates DON’T MATTER at all'? :giggle:
Which is why you conveniently keep propping up his supposed average of 45 (which btw is wrong. His career bowling average is 41,.5, where did 45 come from?) and seem loathe to mention his ER at all? Yea, you do say once in a while that ER does matter, but you rarely ever talk about, unless you’re forced to do it. It’s a bit like those right-winger.. ‘The Muslims have all the rights to build a mosque near ground zero, BUT…’..
What is that supposed to show? From what I can gather is that the economy rate of all of them have been pretty much the same except Yousuf and Jadeja has the second worst bowling average out of all of them. Is that the reason for picking him as a specialist spinner - does pretty much the same containing job as others and does not pick wickets? :hysterical:
Notice that I am only one even trying to bring some semblance of context by posting numbers that matter, in this discussion? If you’re still missing the point, let me elaborate a bit more. Jadeja has played the MOST ODIs in the last 18 months, among all India spinners. More importantly, he played ALL of the 14 matches that we played against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka, matches that Ojha completely missed. The average opposition score in those series’ score was 296. Guess what the figure is for, for matches that Ojha played? 218. Jadeja averaged less than 5 runs/over, when the rest of the bowling averaged nearly 6.25 RPO, while Ojha averaged 4.25 RPO, while the rest of the bowling averaged 4.4. RPO.. Does that not tell you anything? And it’s a total no-comparison with Yusuf, as I have showed you before. His bowling’s is too erratic and unpredictable to even be in the same ball –park as Ojhas. And you’re favorite, Mishra comes out looking horrible. An average of 10 points higher than Jadeja and ER even worse. And Jadeja trumps even Bhajji in ER. So, will you finally concede that Jadeja’s in the team as a 2nd specialist spinner and deserves his place in that position alone?

Even Yuvraj has a better record than Jadeja after bowling 7 overs per innings
No context, no explanation as to who played which series and who missed which series.. Just a database query result..Bravo! Now that’s what I call sound debating! :hail: And to compare part-timers with Jadeja’s numbers, when he bowls more overs/innings than the rest of the part-timers combined.. Great logic there!

It used to be around the 45 mark, maybe it has come down a bit in this series. I don't keep a track of his average on a rolling basis you know. :giggle: Economy rate would enter the discussion if you were not being idiotic to compare economy rate of Jadeja with the pace bowlers who bowl in PP. When you compare his economy rate with other spinners, there is practically no difference. Jadeja bowls 8 overs in an innings and Yuvraj bowls 7 overs in an innings with roughly the same economy rate and average. That tells me clearly that Jadeja is nothing more than a part time trundler and in similar circumstances all other spinners including Yuvraj do a better job than him.

Blah blah blah. You are talking about context and putting forth some sh!t stats. Has it occurred to you that at least part of the reason why our fast bowlers have got pasted so badly in the death overs when Jadeja has played is that the leach does not pick any wickets and leaves the other team with wickets in hand at the death? That kind of perspective is called bringing context, not pasting some random gibberish from stats guru as you've done above.
And it’s a total no-comparison with Yusuf, as I have showed you before. His bowling’s is too erratic and unpredictable to even be in the same ball –park as Ojhas.

Why just Harbhajan? He also trumps Zaheer, Steyn, and Johnson. All hail the metronome Jadeja! :adore:

That’s the ONLY metric you have continuously kept listing upto this point and you got EVEN that WRONG? On similar lines, Jadeja’s ER is 2.5 RPO. It actually might be around 4.8, but I don’t keep track of it on a rolling basis you know. :giggle:
Economy rate would enter the discussion if you were not being idiotic to compare economy rate of Jadeja with the pace bowlers who bowl in PP. :
I brought the ER of pacers to show that he has played in some of the highest scoring series’ EVER that an Indian team has played in the recent times, not to make a direct 1-to-1 comparison. It was a more a rebuttal to your willfully erroneous ‘Oh look, he averages 45, that obviously means he’s crap’ argument.

You think you’re the only one who make ad-hoc arguments off the top of your head, completely devoid of fact/evidence?
And yet he picks up more wickets than Jadeja! You tell me how bad Jadeja is now.:hysterical: :
Yusuf bowls on an average less than half the overs that Jadeja bowls, his ER is a full 1 RPO less than Jadeja and you want to talk up a 4 pt difference in average? Yes, it does not matter that my 2nd spinner care barely bowl 5 overs/match, or the factthat half the time, he’s conceding more than 6 RPO.. All that matters is his average is 4 basis points lesser than his competitor, who actually nearly completes his quota of overs and is significantly less expensive.
You talk about Jadeja having played all these matches. How many matches has Mishra played? :
In the same period, seven, which is less than 25% of the matches that Jadeja played. And btw, did you know that, just like Ojha, Mishra TOO missed all of our previous 14 ODIs at home, games in which our bowlers conceded an average score of 296?

Huh? Grow some sense. Stating that someone's average is 45, when in reality it is 42, and was 45 till a couple of weeks back is the same thing as saying someone's economy rate is 2.5 when in reality it is 4.8? Can you answer this question because you are showing yourself increasingly incapable of a discussion as your Jadeja is incapable of batting or bowling.

An average of 40-45 for a specialist bowler is crap. Period. If it's not then history would be replete with these metronomes! You haven't been able to provide one, just one, single example of a specialist bowler who doesn't get dropped averaging in the 40s! :hysterical: So, you agree that comparing economy rates of spinners and pace bowlers is a foolish exercise? Good, that's some headway!
And using the same logic, your much touted Amit Mishra, someone who you said MUST be ahead of Jadeja in the team if we’re playing 5 specialist bowlers, should be nowhere NEAR the Indian team, because his numbers pale in comparison to part-timer Yuvraj?
Not using the same logic, but using my cricketing eye and not stats guru queries. Mishra simply has not played enough matches, but given a fair run he'll turn out to be better than Jadeja. But even if he does not, I won't get off at the notion of playing him if he continues to average 40-45 after 35 matches as you are. I'll ask for him to be dropped and replaced by someone else.

And what has Jadeja done in those scenarios? Run through the opposition? :hysterical: BTW, I am not arguing for Pathan to be included, just giving you a reference bar as to how crappy Jadeja is that even though Pathan's economy rate sucks he still manages more wickets than Jadeja. What I am advocating is dropping this piece of crap and having Yuvraj and Sehwag bowl his overs. Yuvraj is as good or as bad as Jadeja and if a fifth bowler is to be played it has to be a specialist spinner like Ojha or Ashwin, if you don't want to give Mishra a shot. But no, you are in love with his economy rate and want him in the team ahead of Zaheer and ahead of Steyn and Johnson as ODI cricketers of the year!

Its not that simplistic. The guy's has played in some of the HIGHEST scoring series in the history of ODI cricket. Besides, what kinds of figures do you want from your back-up spinner? 10-2-30-3? Plus, you're comparing Jadeja's numbers from the ridiculously high scoring matches that he played, with something like Ojha's number's, when you know he figured in some really low scoring games and saying 'Look, there's isnt much that separates them...' Thats being deliberately disingenuous.
So, you agree that comparing economy rates of spinners and pace bowlers is a foolish exercise? Good, that's some headway!
And you agree that simply harping on the average of the 5th bowler, without paying any attention to his ER whatsoever, or taking into consideration the high scores that he featured in, is also a foolish exercise?

Yes, you can keep continuing to back your cricketing eye, even as the Indian cricket team continues to pick Jadeja over other bowlers like Mishra, Powar, whom you personally cheer-led. It shows whom they're backing. You're right, the entire Indian team management is wrong!
And what has Jadeja done in those scenarios? Run through the opposition? :hysterical:

'More wickets' is a soooooooooo misleading. By his SR, Yusuf actually picks a wicket every 1.2 matches he plays.. Lots of wickets indeed!.

Two old timers are fighting over Double Ja of all people :cantstop: I dunno, but ERs are also important na? Isn't Gavin Larsen considered to be an ODI specialist based on his ER, in spite of his bowling avg not being that good? :hmmm:

Posted

I haven't read the points in details yet but if your specialist bowler bowling in middle overs is bowling as economically as a part timer would, then his place in the side can be questioned? This is where SR and Avg become imp because as a specialist spinner you would have to focus not only on ER but also picking up wkts. If you fail to pick up wkts in the middle overs, you are either allowing the other team to recover, if early wkts are lost, or lay a foundation for attacking at the death, so in a way making it tough for the seamers. So if a specialist spinner is doing not much better than what a PT would in terms of ER, does it make sense to play him over a specialist bat? And also saying that spinners do a better job than seamers because spinners have better ER is lame. Spinners usually bowl at a stage where the other team is looking to milk them with fields spread out. This is where you would expect your specialist spinners to give you breakthroughs rather than falling in to the trap of bowling containing lines. ER is imp but the best way to stop runs is by picking up wkts. It's wkts that puts pressure on the other team. As if a team has wkts in hand, it can catch up!

Back up spinner? LOL! He is playing as a specialist spinner by your contention! You were the one who started off with the numbers jargon. I don't need numbers to know that Ojha, Kartik, Powar, Chawla, and Mishra are better spinners than Jadeja. Forget the numbers, what cricketing quality do you see in Jadeja's bowling? Does he turn the ball? Does he get drift? Does he have any variation? How do you see him picking wickets?
And you agree that simply harping on the average of the 5th bowler, without paying any attention to his ER whatsoever, or taking into consideration the high scores that he featured in, is also a foolish exercise?
His economy rate is no better than Yuvraj and neither is his average. That tells me all I need to know about his shoddy bowling.

The Indian team management picks him as an all rounder, real, perceived, or potential. That is the entire point of the discussion. If they were not doing so there was no case for him playing the last match over Ojha.
You really want the 5th bowler to run through the opposition? :dontknow:
If the 5th bowler is a specialist bowler, then he should have the ability to deliver at a comparable level to the other 4.
'More wickets' is a soooooooooo misleading. By his SR, Yusuf actually picks a wicket every 1.2 matches he plays.. Lots of wickets indeed!.
Which really shows how pathetic Jadeja is, right? :hysterical:

Stats? It is Jadeja lovers who are bringing in stats about his economy rate and projecting him better than Steyn based on that! :hysterical: Okay, forget stats answer this : What cricketing quality do you see in Jadeja's bowling? Does he turn the ball? Does he get drift? Does he have any variation? How do you see him picking wickets? How is he a better spinner than Ojha? How is he a better spinner than Mishra and Kartik?

Let me flip that right back on you; What cricketing qualities do you see in Jadeja’s batting? Does he have any attributes required of a lower order batsmen? Does he have any semblance of a power-game? Have you seen him clear the infield and go over the top on a regular basis, especially in power play situations? Have you seen him rotate strike effectively against opposition bowling, both spin and pace? Have you seen him absorb pressure and counter-attack? Have you seen him close out any high-pressure chase so far?

Therefore, he neither qualifies as an all-rounder nor as a specialist spinner (as pointed out earlier by many). Case closed :winky: PS to expand on that^: If the argument is that Jadeja isn't an all-rounder, then he shouldn't be be picked over guys like Ojha, Ashwin, etc. But considering factors like Dhoni playing two LFS bowlers in some of the previous game and stressing the need for Jadeja to contribute with the bat, it's not hard to figure out that he is played as an all-rounder. As a bowling all-rounder, he is suppose to be picking up wkts, rather than looking for containment like what a batting all-rounder or a part-timer does. And then he is suppose to contribure somewhat with the bat too. If he is bowling like a batting all-rounder/part-timer and not contributing much w/ the bat then let's have a batsman/batting all-rounder, who would bowl similar to Jadeja in terms of ER and bat much better (or a genuine wkt-taking bowler) in his place. In either case, there is not much case of picking Jadeja or players like him.
Posted

Btw, below is what Dhoni had to say on Jadeja recently (for those who like to go by what's said in media). The statement below contradicts the point our friend is trying to make on Jadeja being a specialist bowler. Ofc we knew that but someone probably thought others buy what's presented here (even made up stuff) :hysterical: link

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said Ravindra Jadeja has the potential to evolve into a genuine all-rounder but the youngster needs to contribute more with the bat. Jadeja, who was dismissed for a first-ball duck in last night's league match against Sri Lanka, has mostly contributed with the ball. But Dhoni wants him to show some spark with the bat as well as he feels Jadeja was picked primarily as a batting all-rounder. "Jadeja needs to contribute more with bat. When he came into the team he was more of a batsman who could bowl. But now he has turned into more of a specialist bowler. He bowls at the death, he bowls in the power plays. "So, I think he is the best potential we can turn into an all-rounder," Dhoni said ahead of tomorrow's final in which India play Sri Lanka. The wicketkeeper-batsman said not having an in-form all-rounder was a concern.

Dude, I am not the one backing him to stay in the team! :hysterical: I take it you agree that Jadeja's bowling has no qualities expected of an international class spinner then. And to answer your questions, he has been terrible with the bat. Having said that, the team clearly thinks of him as a potential all rounder. Do I agree with their assessment? Yes, in the long term (definitely not before the world cup). But having invested 35 ODIs and 1.5 years in him, he has become a bad investment which the team is not finding easy to get out of. Personally speaking we should chuck him and try out Uthappa and Pathan at number 7 before the world cup and then just go in with whatever works out best.

Huh? So Jadeja has not not shown even a semblance of any mentionable capabilities with the bat (apart from the fact that he can probably survive if the pitch is really flat) in 18 months/35 matches, he is not likely to contribute even until the world cup, but will magically start reeling off match-winning innings after that? That is the vaguest defence yet, I have ever seen put forward for a player’s mythical batting abilities. :hysterical: So you’re saying that you have seen nothing that convinces you that Jadeja has any worthwhile batting abilities up until now, but it is your ‘opinion’ that things will turnaround in the long-run? Do you realize that I can say the exact same thing for his spin bowling as well?

Way to deflect the point! :hysterical: But, let me humor you. Jadeja has a half decent technique with the bat. He does not have a power game yet, but with more experience he can develop that. He is a bag of nerves in pressure situations, specially his running, but again with more experience he can work on those aspects. Now can you explain the relevance of this, because even if it happens it is not happening any time in the near future, so he should be thrown out of the team because at the moment neither is he a batsman nor a bowler. He is the typical bits and pieces player who is not going to win you a match with the bat or ball. You can say it about his spin bowling as well, but I am not the one asking for him to stay in the side or even the squad, you are in case you haven't got it till now.

Dude are u high. Do u even know what u r saying. Decide first whether u r supporting Jadeja or not. With 3 pacers n bhajji we already have4 specialist bowlers. As Rett quoted Dhoni, team is looking for a fifth player who cud be an allrounder. Outsider just proved u that his bowling is at par wid part timers but his batting is worse than our tail. The worst problem with jadeja is that he gives a false hope to our middle order that we have 7 batsmen in the team which is clearly wrong and gonna screw us over in the worldcup
