But tipping automatically, for what ? As far as I am concerned, they're doing their jobs. You don't feel the need to tip the clerk at your local McDonalds/Burger King but tip a restaurant waitress/server, why ? (Shades of Reservoir Dogs, I know)

I hate tipping when the people waiting are themselves owners/their kids, otherwise I leave around 15% as that is the expected minimum in the US. I hear that most waiters include tip in their planning as far as calculating income and many are college students or aspiring to become one. It is like performance bonus except that it is paid by the customers. :hehe:
Desi Cartman Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 In Aus waiters are paid at least min wage of $15 an hour so it isnt like US where they only make money from tips hence we dont have a culture where tipping has to be at least 10-15% of the bill. I usually dont tip for bills under 20 and till $100 I leave the change ( if its less than 5 bucks I usually leave 10 dollars ) for over $100 bills, I tell myself not to eat the place again and tip 10-15 and get the hell out of that restaurant

The restaurant has to cover the rest if the waiters don't get tipped atleast the minimum wage. If they get more than the minimum wage, they are welcome to keep the extra. I don't like tipping as i believe the restaurants should pay the waiters but i do it anyway (only in countries and restaurants that expect it). Usually 10%, 15% for extraordinary service and 0~5% for bad service.

If it is an expensive place, I end up tipping 8-10%, which itself turns out to be ~300-400. For cheaper places, I generally end up tipping a bigger %. For example, the other day, my lunch bill came to Rs 32. Tipping 8 rs was 25%, but still I felt it was less, so I ended up tipping 18. But if I get bad service, no tip.

I don't understand why the drivers for delivery need to be tipped as % ?? :dontknow: I mean they just have to make the same trip for a $5 pizza as they have to for a $100 meal. :dontknow: Never tip more than $2 for drivers, especially if there is a delivery fee included.

In some small inns etc there are no service charge hence a 10% tip. In India I definitely tip atleast 10% if the service is good. If I get poor service I don't tip anything.

I tip 15% min, bit more if the service was extraordinaire. I used to work in an Indian Restaurant NY just b4 doing grad school in RI, desis tip like misers and I once, instead of being tipped, offered a cigarette to a journo who happened to be Jang newspapers NY Correspondent There was this one time in Cape Cod, RI that one of the waitresses demanded more Tip, she said gratuity was mandatory and we put too little. We were shocked but them complied as there were few girls with us Biggest tip I got was $200, - bill was $1200, local mafia sipping Blue Label
