Curious Case of Indian "Fast" Bowlers?

2. IPL which has made our bowlers lazy and lose focus
Disagree with the IPL bit... it all depends on how the bowler views the opportunity..if it is one big party for him then that will show.. On the other hand if he sees that as a chance to learn from some of the best pacers in international cricket (current and retired) IPL will only make him a better bowler.

If a RP Singh sees that he gets 800k from IPL where as Steyn gets 150k, why would he want to work hard and do well for India? He would rather become a trundler happy to bowl his 4 overs and get a fat paycheck at the end. I am somehow hoping our bowlers don't get good contracts through IPL, it can then motivate them to work hard and get their pace swing and seam everything back.

Plain laziness, overuse with IPL nautanki/a zillion ODIs, lack of work ethic etc. Most bowlers come from not so affluent backgrounds. So once they make it to the team, win a IPL gig, couple of endorsements and make some decent money, they think they are "made". Morons dont understand that this is only the beginning and they have to perform consistently to make a career out of it.

The period between 2003-2007 was the dream time for Indian pcae bowling talent. Irfan, Balaji, Munaf, Sree, Ishant, PK and even VRV came along. All capable of either hitting 85 mph and/or with definite skills (swing, seam, hit the deck, reverse swing etc). Every major away series we played, we had one of the younger bowler doing well. irfan on the 2003-04 Aus tour, Balaji on 2004 Pak tour, Munaf on 2006 WI tour, Sree on 2006 SA tour, RPS on 2007 Eng tour and Ishant on 2008 Aus tour. Post 2007, we have had the likes of Gony, Tyagi, Vinay Kumar, Mithun, Dinda, Kulkarni and Pankaj Singh, none of whom have looked like a bowler ready for international cricket. Two factors have IMO being the biggest reasons :- 1. BCCI's reluctance to use MRF pace foundation (now a days our bowlers go to NCA for training and rehab, no one is allowed to fo to MRF). Do we even know who the bowling coach at NCA is? 2. IPL which has made our bowlers lazy and lose focus
likes of Vinay kumar, pankaj, dhaval do not look good for International cricket..Gony was not given many chances....Tyagi and Mithun are still in contention and doing well in FC and will certainly contender for a birth in team india....they both certainly are better than Sreerajnikanth.......IMO Tyagi should have been selected for SA tour instead OF JAYDEV UNADKAT..he he has been pacy in Ranjis this year

Tyagi is so prone to injury. Unless he becomes stronger, he does not look likely to have a very good international future ahead of him. This season he has missed 3 matches in the season out of 7 due to injuries.

It would not be fair to call Munaf a useless medium pacer. He bowls a very good line but yes its a mystery why his speed has reduced so drastically. But he does sometimes bowls high 135/136 which means he can still bowl fast if he wants to but he is plain lazy. A strong Capt would kick him and force him to run hard. I still feels he is our better bowler than the lot we have seen in the first test.
He bowls good pace in Test cricket, it is just in OD cricket that he slows down for line and length.

saneindian, I agree with you on the IPL effect on Indian youngsters, and that's why I'm hoping for that whole circus to stop - but sadly it will go on and will only ruin the youngsters even more.

Irfan's decline is the saddest. Did Vengsarkar's treatment of him cause his decline or was it the effect? He was struggling even before being sent back from that South African tour but I cannot help feeling his confidence took a big dent at that time.
How about may be he sucks? First it was GC then it is Vengsarkar. All sorts of aspersions. When a player does good it is all because of their genius or talent but when they cannot perform it is everyone else fault but theirs.
I would very much like to see him back amongst the wickets in domestic cricket. And then get back into the side.
Let him do that first and may be can talk then. Till then no one misses him.

Fast bowling needs strong physique, strength conditioning, good work ethic and a fierce temperament in addition to talent. Indian bowlers lack all of them, so there is no hope. Isn't it amazing that we have never produced a fast bowler of the same skill level of Akram, Lillee, or the might WI greats in all these years. Not one! (Kapil was just medium pace).

That is why I blame BCCI. Look at CA or ECB, the do so much for their fast bowlers starting with good fitness regimes and strengthening programs and advanced bio-mechanic, etc. BCCI needs to select the pacers who seem to bowl at around 140 or more to start with or have some skills with the bowl like swing, etc. and start these kind of programs to improve fast bowlers' skills a and fitness and skills... I have quite a few names in domestic circuit who are capable of bowling at 140s, but without guidance or proper management they are all wasted.. The list is Rahul Shukla (Jharkhand), Varun Aaron (Jharkhand), Abu Nechim Ahmed(Assam), RanjitKumar Mali (Assam), Ishwar Chaudhary(Gujarat), Pawan Suyal(Delhi), Umesh Yadav(Vidarbha), Sudeep Tyagi(UP), Sujoy Tarafdar (Assam), Abhimanyu Mithun(Karnataka), Kamran Khan (UP), Jaydev Unadkat (Saurasthra), Aditya Dole(Mahrashtra), Sreenath Aravind(Karnataka)....etc. If we do not have those facilities in India, we can send these players to English performance centers or to Australian academies, not just for one or two weeks, at least 2 to 3 months of rigerous training in off season can do a world of good to these bowlers.........IMO

Jaisdev bowls 130K... and only ABU Nachim bowls 140 + out of the above, umesh is also 140 +... kamran was Good ..i am surprised why he is not groomed well. mithun is again a jaidev type 130K bowler...cant say about varun and Ishwar and Aditya dale is definitely slow( 130 or less) Sudeep is 130 to 135K.

I didnt mean they all are 140 or plus..they all have good potential to become good bowlers...they need to groom them with good facilities and programs..like England and Aussies do.. England before 2000s had bowlers like Cork and others who were just mediums except Gough who was around 140...then they started their fast bowling programs and now they have many of those..that was my point here..

Well I think Zaheer career is a clear proof that a season of county cricket is a must for our spoilt brats. Really, IPL has hurt us big time. Before that it was the excessive ODIs. I think now cricketers have to take a call themselves. BCCI won't help. Whether they want to earn the big bucks from Pyjama cricket or hone their skills develop their strength in County.
