seedhi Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 There are a couple of posts (including one of mine) that are missing from this thread. Why is that?
The Outsider Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Yeah, looks like it. But to answer your question I did my undergrad from chavanni chaap Panjab University.

achilles Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 This dude comes on Times Now. He keeps whining about senseless stuff and Arnab keeps pwning him every single time with the trademark smile on his face. :hehe:

Usually I have a smile on my face watching the joker at work.
achilles Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Arnab is a media bully if ever there was one. Usually I have a smile on my face watching the joker at work. Sometimes, tit-for-tat is the best policy. Have you seen the absurd nonsense that Wajahat utters when on Indian television(he's even been pwned on NDTV by Barkha & on CNN-IBN by Rajdeep), the left-leaning propaganda and the high-handed approach he adopts when talking to distinguished people on Times Now's panel, whom he should atleast be respecting for their age, if not their unequalling experience? I absolutely enjoy watching Arnab and the entire Indian gang, including the likes of G.Parthasarthy and their Strategic Analyst, along with the guests, who don't spare a second before exposing his double-standards. Ditto on NDTV and CNN-IBN.
Ram Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 You’d think that a secular, progressive Muslim like Javed Akhtar, who is openly proud of his Indian identity and lambasts the Pakistani brand of communal politics will win at least a tentative nod of approval from the right-wingers.. Nope, not a chance.
kumble_rocks Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 you have also said Tippu = National hero .... so no surprises here :--D I stand corrected ! Tippu = National/International Hero ! :--D
The Outsider Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 It always strikes me as fascinating that many of the so called "liberals" would theoretically support a Uniform Civil Code and perhaps even the rescinding of article 370; and yet are vehemently opposed to the only major party that supports both these positions. I can understand that they have their own reservations with the BJP/RSS but maybe they can at least ponder on how our polity has reached this stage that there is ONLY ONE major party (apart from Shiv Sena) - the BJP - that supports Uniform Civil Code which is actually part of the Directive Principles of State Policy in our Constitution, i.e. a long term goal defined in it. Don't know what 'theoretical' support is, but yes I do support the concept of a Uniform Civil Code. If by 'theoretical' you mean I don't actively campaign in support of the concept on the streets of India, then guilty as charged. But I doubt too many 'practical' supporters of a Uniform Civil Code would be doing that either. It boils down to priorities - while I do support a Uniform Civil Code, but not at the expense of the other evils which BJP brings to the table. I have actually even voted for the BJP because Vajpayee stood elections from Lucknow and I consider him a great statesman, who did as much good as he could despite being surrounded by loonies like Modi day in and out. He also did a lot for Lucknow during his tenure as a MP there. And forget about me, lots and lots of Muslims voted for him. If I had to take a guess he would have got the majority Muslim vote from Lucknow. On the other hand his support was much lower amongst lower caste Hindus, who would vote strongly for BSP and split amongst the OBCs with SP.

Much like the Communists in India - their core ideology is based on uniform laws - but they never articulate it in India. But my larger question is how have we ended up with a polity where no one, except for BJP/RSS, supports uniform laws. How has this issue become so untouchable? After all it is in the Constitution adopted by India in 1950, so at what point in history did this happen? Oh and as an aside, why did you delete those posts? And is "chavanni chhaap" an adjective you use for all Indian universities/colleges or only REC and Panjab University?

Yeah, I agree that it is a major flaw in our polity that more parties do not have an official stance for a Uniform Civil Code. The issue is untouchable in the present climate because of the communally charged atmosphere in the country over the past 20 years, and as I touched upon in an earlier post of mine that such a change cannot happen overnight - it will have to be gradually phased in. Hopefully it will happen sooner than later. Oh and as an aside, why did you delete those posts? And is "chavanni chhaap" an adjective you use for all Indian universities/colleges or only REC and Panjab University? Even after making it abundantly clear that I have given up moderation in all but the Cricket Talk and Articles forum, you are asking me why I deleted those posts? But I can guess they were deleted because I made a needless personal attack diverting the topic of the thread. Even though I am a founder of the site, I respect the judgment of all moderators, unless in an unlikely scenario it would come down to biased moderation. I have nothing to hide - I've been on the board long enough and have been open enough that most regular posters know where I've studied and where I have not anyways. No, amongst Indian institutes I've interacted with in some way or the other I have genuine respect for IIT Kanpur/Bombay/Delhi, IISc, TIFR, BARC, RRI, IIA, IIM Ahmedabad/Bangalore, DCE, AAIMS, IUCAA. I would have definitely missed out on a few, but don't hold me accountable to that. And just to add a disclaimer that this is entirely about the institutes and not individual students of whom, you can get crap ones from here and good ones from anywhere else.

Reason is that we have witnessed the ossification of political opinion on several issues such as uniform civil code. Moreover, radicalization (more Islamic than Hindu IMO) has increased in many ways. Lastly, the congress set the worst kind of precedent by overturning the Shah Bano judgment by a constitutional amendment. This have virtually shut out the judiciary from any process of reform. Even after making it abundantly clear that I have given up moderation in all but the Cricket Talk and Articles forum, you are asking me why I deleted those posts?I wasnt aware of this. Anyway, what irked me was the way you referred to one of the better educational institutions in the country, certainly not called for.

I have voted so far in only ONE parliamentary election so far (in 2004, Remember the 'India Shining campaign'?) and guess who voted for? BJP. That now makes TWO members of the liberal-left wing, who have voted BJP in the past. :cantstop:

Realistically, neither am I. But I feel that after the latest round of protests in Kashmir, coupled with the fact that they will die out till next summer with winter setting in soon, there would be a genuine debate on Article 370 and perhaps, just perhaps, it might lead to a debate on a Uniform Civil Code.

My philosophy for elections and voting in India is that one should always vote for the best candidate rather than a party based on an 'ideology'. There are too many bad people in each party to vote for an ideology. However, if you vote for the best candidate you just might get a bunch of good people in the parliament to make a difference.
