pensionplan Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Wasim Jaffer anyone?Jaffer is scary good right about now. I think over the last 2 years Jaffer has taken his batting to a new level. I am pretty sure if he was drafted into a Test side over the span of the last year he would have gotten a load of runs in Test just as a Sehwag did or a Gambhir did. I personally think he should be in place of M.Vijay for SA Tests just as a reward for his golden run on the domestic scene. And this coming from a huge Vijay fan. And remember Jaffa had a century in Capetown Test on the last SA tour. It is very tempting the way he is tearing attacks apart and begging the selectors to take note of. Hope he is given one more run. He deserves it.
ZodiaC Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 you're talking about the exception rather than the rule........Beven was one of the very few players to have a very good average at that position. Nah, #6 & #7s tend to average much higher because of the huge no. of not outs - like say Bevan, Huss, Dhoni, etc.
daryl1985 Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Hi Guys i have not been following cricket for all that long so have not seen a lot of these talents play. How good could Vinod Kambli and Laxman Sivaramakrishnan have been. Are we talking world class? On a side note, i saw Sanjay Manjrekar's name mentioned earlier. I notice he gets a lot of stick on this board, just wondering why this is? Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

When Kambli burst on to the international scene, people were saying he could be better than Sachin himself. Now you can see how talented he was. In his very short career he made two consecutive double centuries and had an average of 54. He ruined it all himself. Money, fame proved to be too much for him to handle and therefore India was robbed of a genuine world class player:((

Laxman Sivaramakrishnan would have never succeeded in international level his stock ball was googly , he never had a big leg spinner in his arsenal so once his googly was deciphered he never was a threat. He was like Amit Mishra slow thru the air and not a big spinner of the ball both bad combinations . Maninder Singh on other hand is classic case of talent gone to waste, he had everything the loop and flight and classical action.

Thanks a lot.Kumble once said there were more talented spinners in India that he has seen than himself. But also added talent alone will not get you to the top at the international level. That cannot be more truer than the classic cases of both Kambli and Siva. Both reasonably well talented that lost their way allowing the initial success to get to their head. Both allegedly did drugs and never spent time to perfect their art and stay grounded. There is a very fine line in becoming successful to being an has been at the international level. VVS Laxman in the 2000 FC season aiming a middle order spot in the Indian Test team after refusing to open a call he made after discussions with his mentor and coaches went on a unbelievable spree and scored 10 FC centuries in a 10 game span that included a 353 versus Karnataka in the Ranji SF. And he rightfully got the spot he deserved and then came the 281 a few months later in early 2001 versus the Aussies and the rest is history. The point I am making is VVS made his talent count and did something with it. And the same cannot be said about Kambli, Siva and a few other players. Hope that gives you the drift.
daryl1985 Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like we really missed out on Kambli. Sivaramakrishnan sounds a bit like Chawla with the googly being his stock ball. I was hopeful that Amit Mishra would kick on after bowling so well against the Aussies 2 years ago but he seems to have regressed.
Sachin=GOD Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Piyush Chawla also did not do justice to his talent IMO. He still has chance to make amends though.
maniac Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Shane Warne,Brian Lara,Shoaib Akthar,Ponting-will they count????
maniac Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 On a serious note Praveen Amre,Vinod Kambli,Rohit Sharma(So far),Venu Gopal Rao,Salil Ankola,Vijay Bharadwaj,Sunil Joshi,Dinesh Mongia,Ajit Agarkar(Better player than he gets credit for),Irfan Pathan,Munaf Patel,Yuvraj Singh,Sadagopan Ramesh,one of the Amarnath brother(don't recollect his name),-Under acheievement is a form of failure too
akshayxyz Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I am sure you have seen this already, http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/30009.html That gives an idea how talented Kambli was. You do not need to be any more talented, after that it is more about discipline and hard work - what he lost as soon as he came to international scene. With all his tantrums and attitude he managed first class average of 59, imagine what he could have been had he had even 20% of modesty, discipline Sachin has. He could have easily been in top 5 batsman of this generation. i.e. alongside Sachin, Lara, Ponting. May be he was destined to be set an example of "wasted talent" - So that one can compare Sachin and him side by side and see what to be and what not to be.
vamos_rafa Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Have you ever watched kaif bat? The guy could not hold a bat properly and his stance was more akin to visiting a toilet. Tragic awful player who made the most of the talent he had which was zero. One of the worst batters to get that many caps for India ever Yes his stance was awful. But I am not going to buy this theory that he was the worst ever player who played for India. There are many others. Remember Devang Gandhi?? Atleast KAif could do something with whatever talent he had, howsoever minimal it would have been. And he did okayish IMO.

I mentioned this in some other post as well. Ramakant Acherakar himself once mentioned that VK was more talented than SRT. NOw that's a bid complement. VK is the biggest talent that we lost. Had he managed to stay focussed like Sachin our team would have been so much better in the 90's. And he always had Sachin as his friend. Donno why he preferred to not to be his aide. And on top of it he recently made a comment that Sachin did not support him. Though it was done on a reality show and it could have been for TRP's, as often is the case in India, but VK has only himself to blame for all this. Maybe coming in from a modest background with no one to guide you took its toll on him.
vishalvirsingh Posted December 6, 2010 Author Posted December 6, 2010 Piyush Chawla also did not do justice to his talent IMO. He still has chance to make amends though. piyush is still a baby he will definitely make his mark.. i wud say he has very less competetion as he is a better bowler than amit misjra.. he will play tests and one days for sure
vishalvirsingh Posted December 6, 2010 Author Posted December 6, 2010 On a serious note Praveen Amre' date='Vinod Kambli,Rohit Sharma(So far),Venu Gopal Rao,Salil Ankola,Vijay Bharadwaj,Sunil Joshi,Dinesh Mongia,Ajit Agarkar(Better player than he gets credit for),Irfan Pathan,Munaf Patel,Yuvraj Singh,Sadagopan Ramesh, one of the Amarnath brother(don't recollect his name),-Under acheievement is a form of failure too[/quote'] yes Amre vijay bharadwaj dinesh are fine but yuvi and ajit and munaf still have scope and are performing .. i should have stated big talents who have retired as well as players who r still playing or competing are being considered in this.. let me repeat we are talking about players who were big and good talents but did very litttle and failed.. to set an example think of kambli ,VRV singh ( VRV has not retired bt is no where in contention) , sadagoppan ramesh etc.
SJS50 Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 How does one define "BIG cricketing talent" ? One would find it very difficult to keep the word big there (even without the capitals) if one was talking of people like Salil Ankola, or Vivek Razdan, or Raju W Kulkarni (the W for Who or Whatever). And if we are going to remove the big, or Big, (forget the BIG) from that thread title we could name a few thousand cricketers each and still have left out a few thousand . . . . You want a discussion on this, undoubtedly interesting subject, then leave the Big in there, in fact make it BIG, and then think BIG when you start any short list .
dhillon28 Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 Ajit Agarkar (very talented bowler/batsmen/fielder) After first 100 odis he had better stats than S. Pollock. After that, down hill.

I started this thread and with BIG , I mean guys who showed a lot of talent and there were expectations of him to do well ....guys who faired well initially and later failed due to lack of hardwork like laxman sivaramkrishnan ..guys like wasim jaffer will not be included as they are hardworking and also did some thing and have scope to still come back. we wanna know who are no more in contention and showed promise but could not suceed. Razdan and Salil were some examples, VRV- greg apreciated him and he is now no where, like that...guys like kaif are examples of limited talent still doing OK, not to be included in this list. Ajit is also fine as he has played a lot and hence got fair bit of chance to play
