Time to get serious

India has traditionally been a great batting side mostly built around sound technique and temperament. They have to stop picking players from ODI squads and start picking players based on domestic performances. First Kaif was a failure in Test. Then yuvraj. Now Raina. All picked from ODI sides. Time to reward domestic performers. If India has any wish to find able replacements for our middle order they have to get really tough on selection. We are never going to become bowling powerhouse. That is a given. So time to build a strong line up for the future.

Well Kohli has done well in ODIs. Are you saying that automatically disqualifies him from tests? I can understand your frustration, but we have to give people chances, may be not too many.

Its the usual problem - how do you judge the domestic batsmen if they only get to face trundlers. And mind you - the speed demons of domestic who wreak havoc are ppl like Vinay Kumar :haha: and Ranadeb Bose who are at best trundlers in Intl level. :winky: In ODIs they get to face Intl. quality attack. But its "shorter form" of the game which is the drawback. Hence the dilemma and confusion in India. One idea is to have plenty of India-A tours to Aus, SA, Eng, NZ, SL etc. Let the best go and keep playing lot of away tours. Choose based on such performances.

Pujara would be a sureshot replacement for Raina if he doesn't score a 50 in 2nd inngs. It's a given. Though having watched test cricket for over 15 years, I think he would all bek idding ourselves if we say that India is out of the game. It's just day 1. So let's wait for the pending stuff which is to happen soon.

While people are calling for Raina's head and give Pujara a chance' date=' isnt that exactly the case with Gambhir as well. S[b']hould we be replacing Gambhir with Murali VJ?
:WTF: this is the 1st innings of the series, lets just wait for at least the 2nd innings before calling for batsmen to be dropped.

I know, but hey as some conspiracists here would say if one CSK player is outed why not get another one in the team:winky:

No getting from ODI cricket is fine. Its good place to find out if player has temperament or not. You are judging Raina on this green wicket where likes of Dravid, Laxman found it hard.

Our selectors are very bad at spotting talent. They tend to go by hearsay, media, domestic statistics etc. All of a sudden, everyone seems to think that Pujara will be the saviour of Indian cricket. The guy has rubbish technique (and also no talent to hit). The guy is committed and all, but not cut out to be a test player.

Pujara is no magic pill. When the likes of Tendu, Dravid and Laxy could not score big in S.African conditions, we cant say Pujara will score big. But he has deserved some chances. Thats all.

In Pujara, Vijay, Kohli, Rohit, Rahane, Mukund, Raina, Pandey we have enough options to slowly become a formidable batting unit. Some might fail, and getting all the pieces and positions in might take a while, but it's only a matter of time not a shortage of test quality batting talent.

Raina has bags of ODI experience but his FC record is inferior to Pujara and Rahane to name two. What those two and Mukund have done is score well not just vs domestic trundlers but on away A tours too; so they may well be reasonably well equipped for a foreign tour. Kohli too has a good FC record suggesting he may well be better suited to long format cricket than Raina. Maybe Raina has had a stop start domestic career since he started playing for India at a very young age, dont know. Theres an issue I think in the slot as well, Pujara is not a no 6 really and it would be unfair to put him there in his first away tour. Perhaps Laxman can bat there.
