Eden Gardens vs MCG ?

Given the choice I'd rather watch a test at Eden Gardens than the MCG. The MCG whilst a magnificent stadium just doesn't look like a cricket ground (which for most of the year it isn't). Much preferred it when they had the pavillion and some of the older stands. It resembles a pumped-up concrete bowl which is what it is these days. Same goes for the Gabba whereas the WACA, Adelaide, Hobart and Sydney still have a cricket-ground character. Eden Gardens is awe-inspiring. Rarely gets close to capacity but when it does it just looks unbelievable. I love it when Tendulkar gets out and the crowd goes so quiet you can hear the players talking - amongst 100,000 people! Amazing! No doubt the facilities at Eden Gardens leave a lot to be desired and it can't be great for most spectators but I hope the refurbishment will keep a 100k+ capacity and retain a unique flavour. Would be a shame if it ended up being another concrete bowl.

MCG for me. 90, 000+ people, Australia vs England ASHES test on BOXING DAY, there is no where else I want to be. Watching cricket in Australia is one of the best experiences one could hope as a cricket fan. B->

Eden Gardens is the place to be when Indian is doing well and 100000 people are screaming , it almost intimidates opposing team with that noise, I have been to MCG , Eden Garden is more intimate and has more crowd effect.

According to WIKI, Eden Gardens is the second largest stadium in the world in terms of seating capacity, next only to the MCG.

Nevertheless, it will remain second biggest cricket stadium in the world, behind the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia

According to WIKI' date=' Eden Gardens is the second largest stadium in the world in terms of seating capacity, next only to the MCG.[/quote'] the capacity is going to be further decreased to 88000 after the renovations for the World Cup are complete. But I'd have Eden Gardens over any stadium simply because of the pleasure of watching a match with nearly 100000 cricket crazy fans.

Eden Gardens of course looks nice on TV.But for a spectator it is a nightmare.Believe me it stinks.I watched a couple of matches there. One was when RSA won by 10 wkts and the whole Indian team was booed.Another one was the Platinum jubilee match(Butt scoring a 100 and India losing). The stadium stinks. There is a rotten stench that fills the air and it becomes almost impossible to breathe or even move. Moreover the crowd is waaaay too bad.The language they use,the abuses they hurl at the players, etc is a big turn off.It has to be the most unsporting crowd in the whole world. MCG is a dream. The ground is beautiful, the pitch is sporting and the facilities for spectators must be at the worst 1000 times better than any ground in India. The spectators may be partisan but I am sure they cant be worse than the Kolkata crowd. For me the best stadium in India has to be Chepauk because not only does it have a great history but the pitch is great and the spectators are also damn sporting and knowledgable about the game

How can there be 100, 000 fans when the ground can only seat 88, 000 ? Are there any open seating areas ? The MCG has a stated capacity of 100, 000 people. Plus its a multi purpose stadium which is an added bonus 9186-200831-mcgaerialj.jpg

Trust me, its possible in India. Number of seats built is irrelevant

Ever travelled in a Mumbai local ? @ topic, Eden Gardens has an awful reputation because of crowd behavior in the past. I wouldn't really compare it to MCG.

Eden garden..............have watched many a matches there.....Saw Goddy score his 1st test century at Eden.Saw the epic Laxman Dravid partnership. There is nothing like the eden Gardens in this world.Yes the facilities in the concrete step areas where not good but after renovation i think it will be pretty good as well.I mostly watch from the stands where there are comfortable seats. Amazing to watch cricket there..........The Mexican wave there awesome.........and that Idiot Manjrekar once said that Eden crowd doesnt know how to do the Mexican wave.

Got to be Eden Gardens - I mean, how can you beat the experience of watching cricket amongst morons who will light the stadium on fire, start riots and start pelting the visiting team with whatever they can find when their team is losing. To top it all they would boo and jeer their country's team because someone from their state and city was not played in a cricket match. Must say, what an amazing crowd and atmosphere.
