I would pick Raina over Yusuf and Yuvraj anyday. But if its between Yusuf and Yuvraj' date=' its hard to decide. May be Yusuf for me.[/quote'] I would pick Yuvraj over Gambhir, Yusuf and Raina any day in an odi.

The way Kohli is playing, he is making the strongest possible case, for a place in the team. The only problem is, his talent, temperament and skill-sets (when it comes to the ODI game) are mirror images of those that Gambhir has. Both of them are no.3 batsmen, both of them have similarly attacking games. They’re quick runners between the wickets, are particularly harsh on spinners, rely on timing/placement more than power to score runs. Its easy to say lets just pick the best/most in-form batsmen we have, but it way more complicated than that. You need players with specific skill-sets for specific requirements. Virat is a great no.3 bat in the sense that coming up the order gives him ample time to ease into the innings, but how effective can he be, coming lower than that? Or are we talking about bumping Gambhir down the order and playing Kohli at no.3? In that case, how effective will Gambhir be? Having 2 players with similar games could potentially have a damaging effect on our middle order. Ideally, you want to have 2 (atleast one), attacking opener. Numbers 3 & 4 should ideally have a mixed game, with the ability to rotate the strike, plus being able to clear the boundary when required. Numbers 5,6 and & must compulsorily have a power game. That is the basic requisite. If they can rotate strike against both spin and pace, that is just an added bonus. Right now, that is exactly how our batting is structured. With Sachin and Viru at top, Gautam at no.3, Yuvi at 4, Dhoni, Raina and Yusuf at numbers 5,6 and 7 respectively. Dumping someone like Raina for Kohli may sound a good move on paper, but it might have a negative effect on our batting, especially during chases.

Yuseless has done f-all in all formats over the past few years. If he does nothing in the WC, which current form suggests is more than likely, then no need for tubby to be in the team post-WC. Need to build for the future and an overweight underperforming prima donna has no part of that. Time to move on.

only problem playing virat is we would have too many top order players.. it sucks, but the guy has to miss out, yuvi, raina, yusuf are must in india one good thing is, any1 goes down with injury, we have their baap as back up in waiting

they are in really bad form. for ppl saying that these guys will start scoring once the world cup starts and we are back home...dont be so sure. today's game was the day i expected a few of these 3 to make a mark. the pitch had NOTHING in it. it was slow, and while steyn and morkel were accurate as ever they looked nowhere near as threatening as they did at durban, joburg, cape town. it was an easy paced track. SA also played two spinners, botha and the pathetic robin peterson. both of these journeymen spinners are about ranji plate level and shoulldnt be THAT difficult to get away. look at how easily virat kohli was playing, and even parthiv - who just got here - looked pretty comfortable against their quicker bowlers, looked like he had time to play his shots. its just that these middle order batsmen havent played a good innings in a while and are struggling for confidence. raina looks the worst, he is usually very confident and backs himself against spinners but today he couldnt even place the ball for singles and lost his wicket to a harmless delivery. same goes for dhoni. yuvraj has been in bad form for a while now. he wasnt getting runs against crappy NZ either, but at least he contributes with his bowling. big worry, this. india's team is the best in the world by a mile on paper, but judging by the form of our middle order i have big doubts over whether we will get it together at the world cup. u cant recover form overnight, it takes some confident batting over a few innings to finally get the groove back. these guys have been struggling to play that one big innings for a while now. raina, dhoni and yuvraj are playing poorly in each and every game. one thing is clear - virat kohli simply HAS TO PLAY in this team. he is the only guy in great form at the moment. he should definitely play at 4 ahead of yuvraj. same goes for yusuf, another guy who MUST PLAY on current form. put him in there ahead of raina. pick guys in FORM ahead of passengers

Kohli is currently ranked as the number 5 batsman in the world. Once the rankings are calculated after this series, he will possibly be in the top 3. He has scored more runs in the current series than any two of Raina, Yuvraj, and Dhoni put together and only 60 less than all 3 combined. Dropping Kohli would rank right up there with some of the best Paki selection decisions.

Sehwag Tendulkar Kohli/Gambhir Yuvraj Raina Dhoni Yusuf Bhajji Zaheer 2 seamers or Sehwag Tendulkar Gambhir Kohli Yuvraj Raina Dhoni Harbhajan Zaheer 2 seamers

this has to be lineup going into the bangladesh game SEHWAG TENDULKAR GAMBHIR KOHLI YUVRAJ DHONI YUSUF HARBHAJAN ZAHEER PRAVEEN MUNAF raina should be given the two warm up games to win his place back. if he does well, then he can play, otherwiise there is no point in picking him ahead of yusuf. its BAD ENUFF having two guys totally shot out of form at the moment, no point in getting another zombie in there

At the moment, it looks like Virat will play. But the transition to a new batting is could be bumpier than you think. How do they juggle between Virat and Gautam at no.3 is something that I am completely fascinated about. Virat is our form player, and has been for over a year now. Yes, it would be pretty stupid to leave him out, especially with Yuvraj in scratchy form and Gautam’s fitness in question.

There is no vacancy for Kohli right now but the vacancy has to be made in the team to make way for Kohli .. I would choose between Yuvi and YP .. I would have not named Yuvi amongst the probable drops but it has been a long time since I have seen the UV we know either in batting or in the field .. his fielding is not Jonty anymore neither he is the six-sixer UV anymore .. but I would perhaps still give him the advantage over YP .. but then in subcontinental pitches YP who is a perfect FTB can change the match in matter of overs .. so hard to decide.. but Dhoni will need to decide at the end .. Raina is doing well considering his batting position and to be frank even YP is not doing that bad for a no.7 .. you cannot expect no.6 and no.7 who are never promoted up the order to make an average of 40 .. let us be fair in that regard and not just pull down Raina .. infact Raina has done better than my expectations for him in SA .. UV has disappointed the most out of the lot alongwith MSD but then MSD is captain and wicketkeeper and so he is also a must .. difficult to choose the 7 out of the 8 probables especially in Indian conditions.. I think we should try out different options in practice matches and then decide .. Rohit should not be in the squad unless any injury happens as he almost rarely performs for India in the 50 over format .. Vijay and Kohli are not that bad in IPL and T20 though .. but surely not in WC final XI .. rest go for 7 out of 8 probables and the final decision would be upto Dhoni based on form during practice matches and quality in Indian flat pitches .. too early to decide as SA is not the deciding factor for India as conditions are completely different.

I don't see any problem with Kohli at number 4, given his game. And if it so happens that the 2nd wicket falls too late into the innings, there is no compulsion to adhere to the batting order. One of the bigger hitters from lower down can be promoted. Yuvraj also needs to be in the team, for he is the best and most reliable of our part time options. That means one of Raina and Yusuf will be the one sitting out. Personally, I would play Raina because he is more experienced, consistent, and a left hand batsman. But, I can see the logic behind people picking Pathan as well since he is better bowler and more explosive.

In another aspect not related to this thread, I would like to question why Dhoni never sends the no.6 and no.7 to open the innings and give some promotion in batting order at least when half of our team is injured .. send Raina or YP to open the innings at least in such matches where we have all our openers injured .. for that matter even give chance to Kohli .. I never understand the logic of getting part timers like Rohit and Vijay who fail repeatedly but still get chances after chances to bat throughout the innings and prove themselves... instead give the no.6 and no.7 a promotion for those matches and let them prove if they have some facility .. a batting order promotion for Raina and YP in such matches would give them both confidence and also help in proving themselves at least once in a while .. they never get benefit of powerplay and in many matches dont even get chance to bat or are sent under pressure .. give them some benefit once in a while when half of our regulars and all openers are injured .. that logic of Dhoni is beyond me .. if Rohit and Vijay can open then why cant Raina or YP being regulars in the team .. if they can perform lower down the order why wont they perform at all during PP restricts where hitters benefit a lot more .. especially when the part time openers we place in the team like Rohit and Vijay also get out in single figures .. Raina or YP wont do any worse because there is nothing worse that can be done .. but it will surely raise their confidence and also imply that the captain trusts a lot more on them

In the WC, most top teams would be firing on all cylinders and playing full strength. They won't be playing like they do in the bi-lateral series (where players could be rotated), which is why we need to make sure that the our top 4 are the ones who are in top form. Since the 2007 T20 WC, we have seen our team not doing that well in ICC events. We have failed to reach the semis of most ICC events. It's like our batting (our main strength) doesn't measure up. One reason that our batting lets us down could be because we play these hyped up super stroke makers (who crumble against quality bowling) good mainly for lower order like Yuvi, Raina, etc at 4 onwards. When facing full strength bowling attacks, they don't measure up that well unless they are in top form. To put it in other way, when we put guys like Yuvi/Raina at 4 against full strength bowling attacks, it is like our lower order effectively starts at #4 onwards. We need solid players like Kohli at 4!

Exactly (@realist) at least in last many months If Yuvi cannot deliver in WC2011, then time for other players to fill into the 11

See on tht pathan bomb thread, all the gay boys are suggesting to drop kohli.

Kohli should be in the playing XI no matter what.He has proved himself for over a year now, and it will be pointless to drop him, especially when he has performed well, consistently. My XI would be like : Sachin Sehwag Gambhir Kohli Yuvraj Dhoni Raina Yusuf Praveen Munaf/Nehra Zaheer Yes, no Harbhajan, as I really don't feel a need to pick in a regular off spinner who is not bowling well, and on the other hand, we have several part timers, who can fill in the quota. We can play an extra batsmen in the side with that. Also bowlers like Pathan, Raina, Yuvraj and Sehwag, have done pretty well, when the quicks have leaked runs.In fact, Yuvraj in the last one year has gone past Bhajji in terms of taking wickets, as well as beating the bat and troubling the batsman. So IMO its a risk worth taking. Bhajji has averaged 40 as compared to yuvi's 32 in the past twelve months or so.So clearly, Yuvi has bowled well in the recent past. Yuvraj Bhajji

I think things are made to look worse in this series because of the kinds of starts we are getting, our avg score after 15 overs has been 50/2 therefore middle order is always playing under extra pressure. In the next match Dhoni should look to send Yusuf to open so that he can utilize the powerplays. I didn't undertstand the logic of BCCI sending Parthiv as a replacement for Sachin, is he good enough to be picked for his batting alone? Shikhar Dhawan would've been a much better choice.
