The Outsider Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Yuvraj's confidecne seems to be shot' date=' dont think he will do well even on the flat Indian pitches. The form players Kohli and Pathan should be in[/quote'] How are you going to bowl 10-14 overs from part timers without Yuvraj? He is an absolute certainty in our 4 man attack game plan.
Manny_Pacquiao Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 india's team looks like complete crap right now. top 3 - sehwag, tendulkar, gambhir - all have injury concerns. will they be at 100% when the tournament begins? the middle order - yuvraj, raina, dhoni - has been in pathetic form over the last 12 months. the only positives are kohli and yusuf, along with the tailenders, and the bowling attack. but on indian pitches, the bowling attack won't be anywhere near as effective, so i guess that one isn't even worth mentioning. we just have to hope that these batsmen click during the tournament. it doesn't look good though
Sachin=GOD Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Absolutely not. Atter today's knock , not picking him in the 11 for the match vs BD will be illogical and unjust. Unless Raina scores heavily in practice matches, he has lost his spot in the 11 IMO. Raina has not done well in just ONE series (and that also in SA, while the world cup is in the subcontinent) and you say that he has got to find his form otherwise he can be dropped. He has been consistently doing extremely well at no 6 but thats going to be ignored because of one bad series in SA. What about Yuvraj - how good is his form? Whats been his contribution with the bat in the SA series?? Or for that matter, whats been his contribution with the bat in the last 4-5 series' to be in the side ahead of Raina?
cowboysfan Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 i agree with shewtabh.if its between yuvi and raina then yuvi wins hands down.a lot could change in 20 days though.

Raina averages 28 in last 12 months. Can't be due to just 1 series failure. After that knock vs Australia when he won the match fir us, he has failed in all formats and looks terribly short of confidence, getting out to uncharecteristic shots. Agreed Yuvi too has been equally bad, but he is a proper 5th bowler now and is a sort of all rounder for us. And now with Yusuf cementing his spot, Raina is almost certain to lose his spot in the 11 at least for the early stages of the tournament. But as I said he should go back to domestic cricket play in the Dueep Trophy matches and then finally the WC practice matches. If he scores there, he will still be in contention for that spot in the final 11.

In 2010 he averaged 53 at that position and even in last 2 years he has been the most successful batsman in that position. With Kohli developing into a very dependable and mature batsman, we can have him at no 4 and Raina at no 6 where he will act as a finisher. Raina at no 6 in 2010 ODI batsmen at no 6 in last 2 years

Raina at no 6 in 2010 ODI batsmen at no 6 in last 2 years Bhai Yuvraj has been our most successful spinner in last 6-9 months. The fight is for 2 spots between Yusuf, Yuvi and Raina. Yusuf and Yuvi due to their all round abilities score over Raina in current form. But as I said even if Raina isnt there in the final 11 for first few matches, doesnt mean the WC is over for him. The tournament is a month long and there will be a player or two who will struggle for form in the WC and then Raina will get his chance.
spectre Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Answer this How does the 2 stats posted by S=G keep any player out of this team. He is given a position to play and he has done exceedingly well in that, in last year and the best at his position among all teams.. People have to fight for other spots. Raina will be the No.5/6 depending on where Dhoni would play Bhai Yuvraj has been our most successful spinner in last 6-9 months. The fight is for 2 spots between Yusuf, Yuvi and Raina. The Outsider Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 ^ If stats guru was selecting the team, you would be spot on.
zen Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Raina at no 6 in 2010 ODI batsmen at no 6 in last 2 years That stats is pointless as it's not like if you slot Raina at 6, he will automatically continue to do well and avg like that Also short term averages (esp if cherry picked) that you are presenting depend upon the opposition, the strength the opposition is playing at, the pitch, form at that time, etc. And we are not picking a player to do well against the likes of BD, Ire and HL. If you see, a QF place for India looks certain so we are picking players who could deliver in KO games. You only get one shot in the KO games, which is why, you have to play the guys in form! In the last 12 months, Raina avg 28, which isn't much to guarantee a place in the side. On top of that Kohli and YP have stepped up their games. As some have said Yuvi could be useful for his bowling so it's a tough call b/w UV and Raina, if we go in with 7+4 combination LINK
vvvslaxman Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 I do not think Raina is struggling. His Test match blues is clearly affecting him. Otherwise he won't be getting out like this regularly. He will find his feet once we are back home. You just cannot rule Raina out of the side. He is such a binding force for the team on the field. It is sure quiet a conundrum. You can leave neither Kohli nor Yusuf the top run getters in SA. You need form players walking into a big event like world cup. I think India might do a bit of rotation here.
zen Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Other thing Ind has to see is that which is a better option: an in-form Ashwin with the ball vs possibly struggling UV/Raina with the bat .... I don't think that a struggling UV/Raina with the bat will be more useful than an in-form Ashwin. This is assuming that Bhajji is already in .... If UV and Raina are not hitting quick 30-40s when playing at 6 or 7 or helping Ind close the games under pressure then playing them for their PT bowling doesn't make sense I would recommend going in with 6 batsmen (apart from Dhoni) only if all of them are in good form.
spectre Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Apply the same logic to Kohli then... ^ If stats guru was selecting the team' date=' you would be spot on.[/quote']
The Outsider Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Apply the same logic to Kohli then... No need to. He has been India's best and most consistent ODI batsman for the last year. Common sense is enough to recognize that fact.

Ashwin is pathetic in the field. Everytime I see the guy play he drops a catch
Sid Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Ashwin is pathetic in the field. Everytime I see the guy play he drops a catch Certainly he has to improve his fielding,he is seriously pathetic but still I will play him in our 11
Sachin=GOD Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 No need to. He has been India's best and most consistent ODI batsman for the last year. Common sense is enough to recognize that fact. and Raina has been the World's best at no 6 in the last 2 years and thats the position where I would have him in the batting order in the World Cup. Even if you want Yuvraj in the team, where do you have him bat?? Kohli in this kind of form must certainly be at no 4, Yusuf is the kind of batsman who can have the maximum impact at no 7 so if he plays the most probably he will bat there only. In the end the position left for Yuvi to bat is no 6 and at that position we've got the Raina who has performed so well at that position so how is it justified that he is dropped??
zen Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Love it when people pull out stats like the best #6 in the world when the guy is avg 28 overall in the last year! :icflove:
Sachin=GOD Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 Love it when people pull out stats like the best #6 in the world when the guy is avg 28 overall in the last year! :icflove: but if he is to bat in the team in the World Cup then it will be at no 6 so thats the stats which are relevant in this context.
